Last brand I would come back for – Apparently the solution they offered to compensate your sim card stop working is to ask you to buy another one with their little discount. The customer service kept saying this is the best I can offer. Do not buy it! Show details

Absolute rubbish with antiquated 2G lifetime traffic updates – Almost a scam. I bought a couple of these for our business at around $550 a piece with the promise of lifetime traffic updates. These units were for sale when all Australian Network providers had advised us that they would be shutting down the 2G network. TomTom never mentioned that the units were 2G and who would even consider asking?? Seriously… Read more

how do they get away with selling that in Australia?? Now the 2G network is gone and so is any live info available to the device! Also no bluetooth available on the device either just to seal the deal!!

Don't waste your money – This device is heavily promoted both on TV and in stores. We understood that it would be useful for guiding us while walking during our travels overseas. We found it to be useless because the battery lasts less than 1 hour even if fully charged overnight prior to use. We have been left stranded and lost due to the battery failure so you cannot… Read more

depend on it. We sought help from the manufacturer for a recommendation on a suitable lightweight battery backup up but did not find there advice very helpful. My advice is look at other options

TOMTOM REFUSE to assist with problems with their junk product – So, right out of the box my TOMTOM 6100 would not power up. Cut a long story short, their customer service (in India) fobbed me off and kept saying the manager was "in a meeting" or "on holiday" and would call me back. Total lies. I wanted a total replacement not a "refurbished" model and that is why they gave me the run around. I rang the… Read more

Department of Commerce/ Consumer Affairs who advised me to pursue the matter with JB Hifi where I purchased the device. I was told by the TOMTOM representative that a lot of people had had defective devices straight out of the box but because I had waited more than 7 days I was too late to use the warranty. They are not a quality product and will NOT replace defective products. I cannot convey how much disgust and anger I feel towards this company. Terrible customer service and just out to take- and keep your $$$- regardless of whether or not their product works. I paid around $350 for a device with all the reliability and long jeopardy of a happy meal toy. Tomtom is a foreign company and so feel they are untouchable and do not have to be accountable to replacing faulty devices. My advice would be to try another brand. Would give 0 stars if I could.

Trap for new players. Speed and safety alerts – Speed and safety alerts only work when you have programmed in a route and GPS is giving Nav directions. Totally stupid. Get with the rest of the players. You want the unit to remind you of cameras, etc. even on your daily commute. Next you will be selling us a separate unit for that?

Total Piece Of Junk – Warning - don't buy a tom tom as you will waste your money. They are pieces of crap. I have owned two Tom Toms and both have been a total disaster. Where to start ... Firstly, the computer interface and tom tom site are impossible to navigate and totally frustrating. Forget about trying to customize your unit or easily do map updates or… Read more

route planning. Nothing is intuitive.

Even under an open sky the unit takes ages and ages to find a satellite. This means that as you come out of a car park in a strange city, you will have no guidance for maybe 5 mins while it takes its time to find a satellite. That means that you are driving blind and getting lost until it kicks in.

Within a few months BOTH my units have lost battery life. The battery is not replaceable. This means that you cannot use it as a hand held device whilst walking which is something it is meant to do. Also, if you want to program a trip at night in your hotel room for the next day, it will be flat. Then you might plug it into a wall charger but then it won't pick up a satellite. Good luck with all that.

I would rate this as ZERO stars if it was an option. I will never again buy one of their products.

6 Inches of CRAP – I've had this new 6100 for some time now. Very expensive for what it delivers. The interface is rubbish. WHY did they mess about with it. You can not customize anything, you can't get free voices. The way it functions via CRAP MY Drive is so pathetic. I have never used it when it does what it is supposed to do I.E. Update the stupid device. It… Read more

forever faffs about stopping and freezing after several re starts it eventually installs a camera update that should have taken a second but actually took about 30 min. In short I wish I had never bought it. I've had several Tomtom Devices. My old 620 Via, was far superior, until it died from a crap power connection. Don't loose your mind and buy one of these. Sounds great 6" maps BUT a 3rd of the screen is taken up with their new garbage information panel. Why give you 6" of view-able area and then put that crap in there. It has put me off Tomtom for good. I will not be buying another one.

CAUTION: a total waste of money – An expensive waste of money. Bought to replace a perfectly good 5" Tom Tom that has worked well. Assumed newer must be better. Every single function is worse than my previous model. The display is rubbish. I can't believe for the life of me why Tom Tom would launch something so sub-standard when previous models have been great.

Hope it helps

Worth the effort to persevere – It took a couple of calls to TomTom but I got there eventually. Had problems with getting my FREE Maps and Cameras and also getting Traffic working but after some adjustments to the TomTom System in India and a couple of resets later ALL GOOD!!! Tel no is 1300 135 604 for Australia but Call Centre is in India. VERY GOOD SERVICE!!. Everything… Read more

works great now, especially Voice Control and Traffic!!. No problems with maps to date but time will tell?? I think they try to divert you around main town centers???? Some speed limits wrong so always obey the traffic signs. New software very different to my previous TomToms but practice/perseverance makes perfect (Almost) Definitely use a NEW email address for every TomTom account. Most ISP's give you at least 5 anyway for free. Also if you download a World Map, make sure that you have at least a 8 GB SDHC card in the correct slot or preferably a 16 GB. My download speed is about 5 Mbps but it still took about 6 hrs for Europe. Please note that I am NOT a TomTom employee or have anything to do with selling them, just trying to help people get a another great GPS working OK.

Expensive piece of crap - no stars if an option – So far complete rubbish. Can't even find my house, which has been in same place since 1992. Bought to replace older Garmin model (broken screen) which was far superior. Also says "Lifetime maps" but turns out they are not free. What a con! If JB HiFi won't replace this, I'll be buying a Garmin from someone else.

Nice unit, laggy interface – It's a really nice device in itself as it feels fairly high quality and looks fairly attractive. However, the software is terrible due to it's slow responsiveness and lack of features. Freezing may also randomly occur. Maps are also outdated with new development areas which completed 3 years ago do not show up. The traffic and speed cameras work great though.

Completely crap - maps are antique-dated – This is a crap. I bought this because of some good reviews. Now I would like to add to the true bad reviews. The maps are not up to date, speed limits are also out-of-date in many rows. I submitted a speed-limit change report several months ago but the speed limit never ever changed since my submission. I contacted their technical support who… Read more

said maps update are basically 3 monthly. But it's been more than 3 months now. Anyone who wants a speeding ticket are welcome to buy this crap.

Costly Disappointment – After owning 7 tom tom units starting 15 years ago, the thought of upgrading to the latest 6" screen would be good, but say, compared to the old Go 2050 the 6100 is slow to start and respond. Not a user friendly control system. No Bluetooth hands free to use whilst hiring other cars. Limited Map Colours along with other controls. Try programming… Read more

POI, rest areas, ect. Lack of differing Warning sounds. Weather Report information. 6" Upgrade to do what. Complete wast of premium money. Did Expect Much Better.

Tom Tom Maps – I paid TOMTOM for map-update; first FOUR addresses either had wrong directions or TOMTOM could not find the addresses that had been around for 2 years! TOMTOM staffer politely thanked me by e-mail for my advise, but did nothing. I believe maps supplied by Sensis, so TOMTOM getting poor maps.

don't buy TomTom.. well they probably all made in the same Factory – haven't even had our TomTom for 14 months and will not turn on. very good strategy TomTom for getting repeat customers.. I work for a large trucking company second largest in Australia..they are going to buy GPS for most of the fleet.. I said to them do not buy TomTom

Lots of promise but little substance – I love the live traffic updates (when they work!. That is all I love. The unit is let down by Tomtom's refusal to allow custom POI's to be shown in the map. My eight year old Tomtom allowed this. If you are touring, you might want to know where rest stops and free camps, etc. are located. Forget it if you have a latest generation Tomtom. Many… Read more

Go 6100 & My Drive – Like the previous review, the product is great. The live traffic and updates (mobile speed camera update is great). I would give the device a 5 star rating. HOWEVER, if you have another TomTom, (I have a Rider for the motorcycle and it's weather proof) you can only have one device per account. It will then delete the information (backups… Read more

etc) that you have for the device. So my issue is with the way to update it, my Wife has just updated to the new unit (on my recommendation) and we cannot connect it as she has an older TomTom that is about a 3 inch screen. So she can't install the latest Maps, unless she gets a new email address and account.

So if you already have a tom-tom and don't have another email address, get another brand. Someone at TomTom has built a serious limitation into the software that is going to manage your device.

Great All Round GPS Device – This is the TomTom GPS that should have come out a year or 2 ago. Having the TomTom 600 previously the one key feature I missed what the inbuilt traffic receiver as I hated to tether my smart phone to it ever time to get traffic updates. Also if you have a GPS but no traffic data its great, soo many times it has gotten me out of gridlock… Read more

because it found a faster route and literally shaved lot of time on my trip.

The look and feel are EXACTLY the same as the 600 BUT with a few key differences

1. A built in traffic receiver so you do not have to manually tether your smart phone (it does cost $100 more but to constantly tether it every time its just nice that it works straight out of the box

2. LIFETIME: Maps, Traffic and Speed Cameras. I no longer have to pay each year for these services

3. World Maps: I probably will not take it travelling but all maps for their entire database can be downloaded for free including the traffic data and so on. But its nice to know I can take this unit with my globally and know it will just work.

4. Fells a tad faster / response. Could be my imagination but I fell that this unit just feels a little faster than the previous model.

Nifty Features (Some features also in previous version and some new ones all in this unit)

1. Report Speed cameras: Many times I am driving down the highway and I see a mobile speed camera, I can actually report it for my fellow TomTom users & also I have had reports pop-up while I drive that a mobile speed camera ahead. Its nice to see the warning and see a cop car hiding behind a wall (party obstructed) but you know its there so you will not get a speeding ticket.

2. New feature of being able to add places, make routes and so on through my desktop / tablet. For myself it I find it much easier to just type on a keyboard and it auto uploads to my unit through the mobile SIM installed.

3. Big Screen: I know 6 inches is large but it soo easy to see the screen at a glance making it a pleasure to drive.

Other standard features

1. Voice recognition

2. 3d Maps are standard now but its nice to have the landmarks, if any of you are like me I am a landmark person so it orients me faster knowing that a certain building or landmark IE Sydney Tower is on the map so I know where I am easier.
