Poor map update service – I bought my Go Live 2050 a few years ago and avoided map updates due to the cost and complexity of getting them. I bought a map update subscription with 6 months free and it does not work. The TomTom MyDrive software does not link my purchase with the order. So my subscription is listed as EXPIRED. This after paying $89.95 for the update. To make… Read more

matters worse, the profile automatically changed my address from Australia to America. I have never lived in America and my device and maps were bought here. You can not change the country and so it is stuck with the wrong country.

The device is OK, however online support and maps are not great.

Worst web support – GPS is not bad but getting updates is the most frustrating experience I have ever encountered. Would never buy another one as a result don't need the grief.

Best navigation system I have used – I have owned 4 bmws and one ford territory and have found the Tom Tom much easier to programme than the in vehicle systems. The Ford Territory bring by far the worst. I also like the live updates provided.

Delete cameras after 1 years – This device is rubbish after 1 year. You can still use it every year after paying $70/-. you can't see any camera warnings even you can't use local search option. This is like you have to pay $70/- every year after already paid $399/-

Perfect device, good service – Although not cheap, bought it with Australia lifetime map update so I always have the newest Australia maps. For travel it's useful as well, but remember which country you're going to - Iceland was not part of the Europe map for example. I find the interface very easy to use and it seems to catch the GPS pretty fast. Once the suction cup… Read more

stopped attaching to the window (as I shift it between cars sometimes) - a call to Tomtom was all that's needed for them to send me a new suction cup for free. Perfect service!

Good Device which works well here & overseas – I purchased this primarily for a trip in which we drove a rental car in Europe - the cost of hiring one there was about the same as buying the TomTom but at least with the latter we had something to keep. I was therefore able to test the device on Australian roads before going, and European roads later. Map Updates This aspect was initially… Read more ·  2

very disappointing because the process corrupted the Australian map and made the device unusable. It also somehow deleted the European map, the whole reason for buying the device. I was close to returning it to the store. The TomTom tech team were helpful to some extent and isolated the problem - my home internet's security settings were interfering with the update and disconnecting TomTom's server. Once I disabled that I was able to reload/update all the missing or corrupted maps and everything worked fine.

Device Settings

The device has plenty of settings that are fairly easy to use to customise to your preferences. I did get frustrated with the goto address icon disappearing, but realised that this may be a safety issue related to the car's movement. When stationary, I was able to use this. I better reading of the instruction manual beforehand would probably avoid such nuisances.

GPS Functionality

The device is reasonably accurate and the display is clear. The spoken words are also clear and accurate. It locks onto satellites fairly quickly and there were no unreasonable delays in responsiveness. In France, the device performed well, although it was slightly slow in guiding us through some roundabouts that have as many as eight roads converging (I can't blame any GPS having a few problems with that scenario under reasonable speed).

Mountings

The plastic suction mounting is robust and without any thin parts that can break. Suction is achieved by rotating a collar until it locks onto the windscreen. It adheres very well and is almost impossible to dislodge unless the collar is released. The GPS is quickly slipped into or out of the mounting as there's a magnet guiding it into position. This means you can remove it easily without constantly straining the plastic mounting.

Battery

Rated battery life is about two hours and I think that seemed fairly accurate. In most situations you'd need to connect the power cable which has a USB plug at the end. If your car doesn't have a USB power source you'd need to buy a cheap $5 adapator for the 12V power outlet. The cable is long enough to comfortably reach the power supply even in my large car (SUV).

Summary

This GPS model is not cheap ($550) because it's top of the range. Obviously, the world maps add to the price but I was able to get a TRS GST refund ($50) upon taking it through customs at the airport. If you don't need world maps you would probably consider buying a cheaper model with as many of the features as you think are worth it. It was worth its weight in gold to us in western Europe because it constantly got us to the exact place we needed to go and we'd have been hopelessly lost without it. For local use back home, it's a versatile device that is reliable.

clunky as hell - DO NOT BUY! – The maps have plenty of errors, the speed camera locations have obvious locations missing, the interface is clunky and slow. It seems that tomtom heavily relies on user input to correct the errors on their maps and thus leaving very little in reliability. A mapping organisation should only supplement the maps with user input. A very generic… Read more

problem solving solutions (their answer for every problem is to reset the device)

I recommend almost any garmin GPS device over this brick. Even my 10 year old Garmin GPS works faster and more efficiently than this crock. DO NOT BUY! not much really, the big screen thats about it. oversized, slow interface, map errors, camera location errors, difficulty updating and connecting to a pc, customer assistance

Map updates do not work – I purchased 2 of these units. One for me and one for the wife. We are now 12 months down the track and have been unable to get the map updates to work. I have been in touch with TomTom an a number of occasions and they have been unable to provide a solution to this issue. Inevitably they direct me to supposed problems with my computer or internet… Read more

connection Blah Blah. The truth is I have tried to perform these updates using multiple operating systems on various computers connected to the internet in various ways. Rubbish. Overall the product is good however the update mechanism is shocking and does not work and the support from TomTom is dysfunctional. Functionality is OK. Updates plain do not work. Could at least learn my preferred way to work. Does not understand road incidents as well as I would expect.

Terrfic Gps Very Good Directions – This GPS TomTom Go 2050 Live I have had now for 14 Months so I have had plenty Time to Test Well. Traffic Side of things Excellent!! is understatement as will give me traffic updates even in a small City Like Warrnambool, Victoria where needed so traffic side of this unit is certainly very very good to have. Traffic works from a sim card… Read more

inside the unit so no tangling of external wires like years ago.

Mapping side of things is also Mostly Very Very good even in small country towns for most part knows house numbers & street names. Has the odd small sections where house numbers aren’t on it & odd small sections of no through roads it thinks are through, But find as new map update’s come in these seem get fixed with reports from users & general updates.

Directions-

Very Good Like Lane Guidence, & Roundabouts it Says Take Second Exit

Speed Restrictions well Like all Gps Devices Speed Restrictions can be out by some distance when moved out/in Further so Do Not Trust Solely GPS On what Speed Limit It says good chance it’s Wrong Look at Road signs far more Reliable.

Fixed Red Light/Speed Camera Alerts Yes it does warn you of locations of potienal Cameras I am not aware of any Missing or false Reports to my knowledge.

School Zone Waring’s - This can be bit iffy & out by some distance but Usually A School is fairly Close to Where it goes Off I Think it can be turned off if does annoy you.

Ease of Use- Yes it easy to Use & Screen is Very responsive & fairly light taps only required.

Bluetooth can be bit touch & go for older phones but seem get work on my Motorola XT910

Overall- Yes I would Recommend This Unit for City & Country Resident’s Alike & great for Beginners.

Feel Free to Ask Questions On my review Live Traffic Updates, Good Maps, Great Directions The Odd No House Number, The odd No Through Road not showing as such

Go Live 2050 World – When the old Go720 died a new GPS was needed and this one has world maps which made it of more value for the planned OS trip in 2013. The Live aspect for traffic was good and the transfer of speed cameras from my old GPS to this one and converting to Live updates was good. Generally the unit is good but as with all GPS the maps in this case from… Read more

Sensis need to be more accurate in some areas.

Same old map errors need correction on the Sensis supplied maps which in some cases can be easily fixed with own map updates - like through streets shown as dead ends in my local area, plus other errors - such as "going cross country" when following the road near Newcastle. Constantly saying updates available on cmputer when connected yet you have already updated in the last few minutes.

It is frustrating when one has been advising Sensis of some problems for a number of years yet they never fix the base maps. large screen, Live traffic updates; easy to read same old map errors need correction

I Love This GPS! – Perhaps I am not as tech savoy as others so I only use the most important features on devices i.e to get from A to B as quickly and as easily as possible and I have to say that this Tom Tom does that for me. The live updates every 2 minutes mean I rarely sit in traffic jams and get to where I am going on time. the large tough screen make it easy… Read more

to use and the options are laid out in a very user friendly way so what more could the average person want?

I replaced a piece of garbage Navman (that drove me insane for a couple of years) with this Tom Tom GPS and I couldn't be happier. I have even recommended it to my adult children. :) Ease of use, reliability, live updates every 2 minutes Sometimes it has a little glitch and I have to shut it down to reboot it and then it's fine again but this small inconvenience every now and then is definitely worth it!

No file access, Not Much Other Access Either – Not more tomtom home and no file access at all to gps and poor access via TomTom web site does not make me happy I bought this unit. About the only thing you can install is POIs and that is a painful process. It is at least very quick to get a GPS fix unlike my previous TomTom Go 730. 5" screen Can't install "Event Logger" to GPS, no file access, don't boot when power attached, no native logging of progress

Comments on LIVE speed camera features – I was going to upgrade from a Start to a TomTom Live device as they were previously advertising that they had capability to identify mobile cameras. Good that I didn't as this is no longer advertised and I would have spent $400 for nothing. What is going on at TomTom ? Clearly Australia is not a focus market for them. Maybe a switch to Garmin is… Read more
