JUNK – Any product made by this company works after a fashion. Try to get the latest map or even navigate through their website and you can just forget it. I would not recommend and I will never buy any of their "products" ever again. Check out other reviews for confirmation of what I have written. Everything
Works OK, need for constant expensive upgrades annoying – I've had my XL for a few years now, replacing an older, heavy 510 which had its battery die (and what a job it was, replacing that!). My unit works OK although it has a tendency to turn itself on, the battery goes flat, and all settings are back to default including language suddenly Afrikaans (presumably because it's first language in list,… Read more
starting with "A"). It's extremely annoying to have to upgrade maps all the time, at considerable cost. I now travel a highway completed in 2010- my unit goes nuts on this road, and it's not crash hot on other WA roads either, sometimes depicting me driving in a paddock or even in the ocean!
Also, it's very hard to see during the day, especially with sunglasses on. Ability to have various data displayed on screen, such as speed and direction travelling in, announcement of next street, nice English accents (don't like the Aussie ones). Difficult to search for streets if you don't know the suburb you want. There might be 20 "Wilson Sts" in a city! I've tried various methods to keep mine on the dash, too, not always with great success. Dash "bag" slides off, suckers unstick in heat. Points of interest not always listed, and on a recent visit to Perth, took me to the hospital I wanted, but not to the carpark!
tom tom map update – purchased an online map update for my aging one XL, while the unit is now 4 years old and still works fine the latest map that was downloaded still had a street open to traffic although the council has had it blocked off to through traffic for almost 30 yearsandI have gone in and corrected the error as a permanent correction on three updates now,… Read more
I wonder just where TomTom get their data from, and just how many other errors are in the map updates, I have noticed that Speed limit displayed is often different to the posted limit, which is a little disconcerting if one is in an unfamiliar location. overpriced for annual subscription. not much inaccuracies
Expensive maps – My tom tom is a older model and i wanted to upgrade the maps for Perth area only, as a huge number of newer suburbs have been developed. looks like it will cost me $99 for maps of Aust. I can buy another device for that price. I think I will put the $99 towards a Garmin, at least their map deals are more realistic. Ease of use Map prices
Tom Tom 2050 free map lie – Brought the Tom Tom 2050 and was told fax the receipt for free live time map updates. Did all this to be sent emil saying receipt was not right send again, after doing this 3 times and waiting on the maps, now get sent email asking me to pay for them. What a rip off. They must be going bad to give false promises to make you buy from them. Going back to Garmin at least they don't lie. False advertising
NO way would I buy any TomTom device again – TomTom refused me a refund for non-working product. I was given the run-around for months on end and I finally gave up - out of pocket! If you are considering any of their products, make sure you get a working demo before you hand over any money - online purchases a problem in this regard. Didn't work
Same problem. My new TomTom crashed overseas and as a result, not only were we out-of-pocket having… Read more

No service ! – I have been using Tomtom for years, thought it was great. Now cannot get sensible feedback on problem and their Australian service number says help service unavailable. I have been trying this for 10 days. It seems two have collapsed Good device Non-existent service

Tomtom is a Dutch company, not American
Touchscreen not working. Waste of money. Beware buyers – This is my second tom tom. both have only lasted 2 years. Will never buy again. What a waste of money. They are not cheap and cant buy every 2 years.. IST one sound went, 2nd one Touchscreen stopped working. Just phoned Tom Tom. Very unhappy. Want $90 minimum to fix. If lucky will only last 2 years
Tom took us around Australia – Tom was able to navigate most of the roads around the outside of Australia; both rural and cities. Plenty of notice for turns is required for towing a caravan and he did this well. We chose a male voice that was easy on the ear; at times he did not recognise roads but he soon recalculated; nothing beats using your own brain as well as listening to… Read more · 1
Tom. There is a choice of additions such as petrol stations etc which I have added to maps; Sometimes a bit of a problem in turning on. Doesn't work indoors but I guess the satellite signal isn't present there. Overall I am satisfied and take Tom most places especially when going to Brisbane. Map updates; easy to work; choice of voices; tells which lane or which way to veer on the road; recalculates quickly when wrong turn taken Thought it was expensive when we purchased; doesn't know about 4 AK road at Kingsthorpe..didn't know it existed
Excellent – Sean (named for the male Irish voice chosen for our one One XL ever since we’ve had it) has been an invaluable member of our family. Bought for our relocation, it helped us navigate around when we had NO idea where we were going. However, like all family members, it has a few annoying habits! Very easy to use – intuitive for most operations, easy… Read more · 1
to navigate the menus (excuse the pun…) and very forgiving if you miss the turn. Inexplicably get lost in the city in certain areas – maddeningly frustrating when you’re half way home and suddenly it goes on holiday… Also needs to be reset sometimes when it simply doesn’t pick up a satellite signal after power on.
Excellent – Best GPS I have had. So simple to use I bought one for my technophobe Dad who is also in love with it. I use it alot and find it is especially good for double demerits time to keep an extra eye on speed and since I found the school function it is fab for school zone reminders also. Was a life saver in Brisbane recently where it gave detailed lane… Read more
instructions which without would have had me driving miles out of my way every trip! Love the instructions and voice choices. Super easy to use. Very accurate in arrival times. "Thinks" on the spot well instead of sending you back to the original route if you miss a turn. It took me ages to get it to turn on and off - mostly just my touch I also have this problem with my mobile phone!

Voice – I have a tom-tom one xl. Always takes the tourist route. Even when I say the shortest it takes me the tourist route. Also can't get the sound I want for arrival... I want the old claxon horn sound for arrival and can not do it. Frustrating. It says its in the internal but I can't access the internal on the device or computer ... Frustrating. Apart from those [censored word removed] I am happy with it. It's a nice unit

Excellent – My partner and I shared this Tom Tom for ages... it had a fairly hard life being constantly prodded and poked in 2 different cars. After leaving it in storage and not using it for a while it died though and no amount of poking and prodding could bring it back to life - until we got a new battery! New battery was $17 on ebay and hey presto..… Read more
its back in action again ! Was going to buy another one as a replacement but now no need ! - Bigger screen size than many other nav systems, made it alot easier to read while driving
- Easy to use
- Love the "Yoda" voice :o) "at the next corner, left you must turn" !
Excellent – Lucky it's so easy to use as manual's pretty hopeless. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who spent ages trying to turn it on first time - I think power button needs holding down for a few secs, then patiently wait. After turning it on, it can take up to 5mins to get a signal - I think due to clouds. Voice instructions are well-timed and never… Read more
annoying.
Takes all the stress out of driving to new places, found some new shortcuts to old places. I still drive my own different way to familiar places when it avoids traffic and I still keep a hardcopy of roadmap in the car which I still find useful.
Don't leave it in your bedroom because one time I left it turned off in my bedroom. I had fallen asleep when I suddenly heard, "You have reached your destination" - nearly died of a heart attack!
Other than that, I love it. Ease of use. Works quite reliably. Can prevent "backseat driver" troubles. Sometimes hard to find signal. Impossible to see when sun's shining on it. Nothing beats local knowledge of roads as it can get you stuck in heavy traffic.
Excellent – I think the TomTom One XL is an excellent Navigator despite it not having some features offered by other Navigators (Hands Free Bluetooth, MP3 Player etc..) However I already have an MP3 Player and a Handsfree Car Kit and im in the market for a Navigator not a all in one gadget. The Large screen makes it easier to see the Map and Menu and the… Read more
additional POI's and Voices can easily be obtained from various websites though it is a shame that weather and traffic information is currently unavailable in Australia (though its not a product issue but a service issue). Large Screen, Quick response to recalculation of route, Loud Speaker, Easy to Add additional POI's and Voices and easy to navigate touch menu. poor battery life(1-2 hours)
Excellent – Excellent unit I used a Navman before purchasing this unit and the Navman was good but the TomTom gives clearer instructions especially on roundabouts etc. It also is less intrusive only giving instructions when absolutely necessary. For instance on the Navman will tell you to go straight ahead if there is a major turn off from your route. The… Read more
Navman will only tell you when it wants you to leave the road or motorway you are on. It gives plenty of notice prior to turns and keeps up well at 100klm an hour. I like the fact that you can alter your route to that chosen by going to "alternatives" and selecting Via and you can set towns or roads etc you wish to travel on. In fact at home you can plan your whole route for say a driving holiday and save it for when you leave. A great GPS that anyone can use. Easy to use, good quality and accurate navigation Screen can be a little hard to see in bright conditions. I would like it to select night and day automatically rather than you having to to preferences to do this. A minor thing though.
Excellent – For it's price bracket this little guy fit the bill. I've used other navigation systems before, and many had issues such as when needing to recalculate a route after missing (deliberately or not) a turn-off. The One XL can quickly recalc a new route so you don't end up missing the *next* turn-off. I find the One XL is easy to follow, has an… Read more
intuitive interface (so morons like myself can figure it out easily) and lots of little things that make it heaps nicer than the original navigation systems. It comes with lots of voices, a few pre-configured colour configurations and an easy Night-mode/Day-mode toggle.
Favourites can be pre-programmed, and there are points of interest (including fast food and petrol stations), fixed speed camera warnings, a speed indicator, overhead views, 3-d views, zoom in, out, bluetooth for your phone, SD card expandable for new maps (like Europe!!). It can automatically increase or decrease its volume to compensate for the noise when driving at faster or slower speeds.
Its big screen is definitely a plus, and it's surprisingly not bulky or heavy. The battery does have a tendency to discharge over a few days of non-use, but the in-car charger and USB charging ability compensate for that. Besides, it also has a low power mode to help conserve power.
All in all, I'm glad I held out to purchase this unit. It looks good, it works good and it's easy to use. What more could I ask for? Big, bright screen, easy to navigate, fast recalculation times, easy to install new maps. Speed camera locations, dynamic volume, speed guide... lots of little "nice touches". Not much, yet.
Excellent – This product rocks... Tom Tom as usual pull out all the stops for their consumer. The menu is really easy to use (unlike the new navman) and is very fast in picking up GPS... really good for the older person... like me. really easy to use... but be careful to buy the 'traffic' ready tomtom xl
Excellent – I recommend this unit to anybody, and especially people who are not tech savvy. Addresses are easy to enter and then away you go. Voice commands are understandable and are always correct. When it says turn left, you turn left. The screen is clear and displays the map in good colours so you can distinguish which road you are following. Battery life… Read more
is standard (about 2 hours) but generally if you are traveling a long way you will have it plugged in anyway. Extremely easy to use. Software is great for updating and downloading. Screen is a descent size. The suction mounts don't stick all that well. Newer models have resolved this issue.
Terrible – don't buy.. waste of time ... most of your time spend on waiting on the phone trying to talk to customer service customer service 100% crap

When we purchased ours we did get a free map update I believe. This was in 2010 or maybe earlier. After that, we paid for the updates each year.
