TomTom XL Classic

Out of the box, works fine – Not a bad unit, got me from Country Victoria to Brisbane pretty good. worst part is that the maps cost as much as buying a new unit, to be honest, that makes it a disposable device. same as the Navman really. better off using an iPhone/Android with Nokia's Here App installed, that works just as well as the dedicated GPS units.
18 months old and dead as a do do – The unit worked perfectly until a week ago. Now won't turn on . I've tried the reset button several times but to no avail .its always been slow to pick up satellites but it did work. Checked the tom Tom website seeking assistance but that was no help . I've just purchased a new Garman unit very pleased fast to get satalites and accurate directions.
Terrible dowload/update system – Jan.2015: Just paid my hard earned $89.95 for the 'latest' map updates, did the download etc., only to find that the new(ish) Gold Coast Hospital is still not listed !!! In fact, a lot of the hospitals that previously were there to scroll through are gone. Phoned Australian support (in Bangaladesh of course), to be told that credit card… Read more
payments take 24 hours to process. What !?! TomTom get real !! Plus, my on screen page tells me that my maps are now up to date.
My advice? Buy a Garmin. I'm currently in the process of downloading their map updates, and so far the process is painless.
GPS unit is let down by TomTom's poor website – Regardless of the quality of TomTom's GPS unit, at some point you will want support from TomTom and that means visiting their website. Perhaps you want to check that your map is up-to-date, perhaps you want the complete user manual (the GPS unit comes with a quick start guide, but nothing more). Unfortunately, TomTom's website has numerous… Read more
problems:
- Technical errors which mean certain pages won't load in certain web browsers because of plugin issues or JavaScript errors
- Content navigation based on your GPS model, which is fine unless (as in my case) the model stated on the box is not listed on the website
- User guide navigation that forces you to click through page after page of an apparently unsorted list of user guides.
- Apparently no email address for contacting TomTom, but instead a forum that is heavily organised around models and where the WYSIWYG editor is not properly configured (it inserts spurious HTML elements when you switch between HTML and Rich Text views).
So unless you can operate your TomTom GPS without support, then think twice before trying to get any help from the TomTom support website. GPS unit design is competent Support website is poor
Will lead u astray – When I purchased this Tom Tom to replace a Navman which continually took me off into the wilderness I was over the moon. It was efficient and the maps correct. I made the mistake of upgrading to the newer maps via the internet and I swear they were provided by Navman. My latest exploration was of suburban Brisbane while trying to come home to… Read more
the Sunshine Coast from Ipswich. Certainly a good buy if you have the time and inclination to take the scenic route. Web site had just advised that they no longer provide support via any means, but they were happy not long ago to take $99 to supply me with 12 months worth of map updates.
Love it – This was a Christmas present as it was not something I would buy for myself but I wish i had got one before now. Easy to use and fun with the different voices and animations that can be downloaded for it Started using it as soon as we went travelling and it plans the easiest fastest route for me and now I do not have to worry about getting lost.… Read more
Also like how I can tell if I am speeding if I have missed the signs as it is on the screen in red and I like the red camera feature as well.
As with all products today the extras like maps, voices and some other features are expensive to buy but they are not really needed any way so you do not have to buy them if you do not need them.
think it should include another option in the box for people who do not like the TomTom on the windscreen maybe the vent attachment.
The price is reasonable for the item on the site but the postage is not as they give you a $20 email voucher to encourage you to spend and it is still expensive so off to Ebay for a generic vent holder Ease of use No option for placing some where else in car except windscreen
