Confused owner - Manual problems – Greetings, I purchased a VoltX 12V LiFePO4 Plus 100Ah Battery on or about the 4th May 2023. It is connected to a 32lt Engel set to 0 degree C. The battery is charge buy 2 x195W solar panels running through an MPPT Regulator set to Lifepo4 battery parameters. The Plus form of the battery reputedly comes with five years warranty however I… Read more ·  1

received no paperwork explaining that or indeed an invoice from Outbax, the seller, either. However I have a paypal receipt

The battery has an LED screen, but there were no (clear) instructions as to how to change the operation of the battery I.E. its voltage readout and or any other changeable features. After reading some of the questions posed here i.e. the voltage readouts, I can say that my battery charges daily to 14.5v It reaches this voltage after approx 3 hours of (MPPT regulated) 9 amp charge then float...However overnight - approximately 12 hours at 0v charge and 8 amps drained It displays an average low voltage of 12.25v and an average unloaded V of 13.1v. I recently phoned customer service and the person suggested I contact the seller, but if it as simple as changing the parameters of ( I'm guessing the BMS), and after what one reviewer said of their experience with the seller I'm hoping to work this out here... BTW I keep good records of the daily condition of the battery mostly to graph the performance through a variety of (solar) weather conditions, see attached image, if you do please note the "Amps" columns are accumulative but you can still deduce the amount used in a 24 hour period happy camping :)

Unreliable VoltX 12V 100Ah Lithium Ion LiFePO4 Battery Ultra Premium PLUS and poor service and support – This product, with 2 batteries in parallel were not reliable for keep power at night to run two CPAP machines. They were only 10 weeks old , with 5 years warranty. The Voltage drops in few hours showing a faulty product. They forced to my and family to return from my holiday to Sydney because they wanted the probe the claim with their technician. They refunded only 85% of the value without negotiation. Product and support not recommended. Show details

Faultless and bargain price – Like all bargain priced items, there is always a sense of hesitation. However for the price I was willing to take the plunge. I have been using this battery for over 6 months now. It sits in a battery box in my canopy. Has bounced around a bit. Gets charged predominately via solar only (160W panel), with some top ups by 240v charger. Has run 2… Read more ·  1

fridges (40L & 60L) without issue for days on end. Delivery was fast. The product has been so great that my brother purchased one too with a similar setup as me and his has run faultlessly as well.

Edit Update (long term usage): I have been using it for over 2 years now, and both batteries have been running faultlessly. I run 1 fridge almost every day and it has not impacted the capacity of the battery. It lives in my canopy and over the North Qld summer periods can get beyond recommended operating temperatures and it hasn't missed a beat. My brothers is still perfectly fine, gets placed in a battery box on the back of his tray when needed, in the elements, and again runs flawlessly. Both batteries have been used to very low capacity on rare occassions, without any adverse effects.

Good for the price, and my failed unit was replaced – I am on my second battery as my first unit failed, but at this price to get into lithium you expect some compromise on quality. The good news is that Outbax replaced it no worries and new unit is going well. I didn't have to pay return postage and I was only out the inconvenience of swapping out the battery and swinging into the post office and… Read more ·  1

not having it for a camping weekend.

It's Light, fast charging, has low voltage drop under reasonable load and at this price it's well ahead of AGM equivalents.

I've not tested the full capacity and the lowest I've taken it is ~60% (250w panel feeding it, as well as a DCDC) usual cycle is down to 70 or 80‰ +. Max load I've had on it is ~520w (battery is 600w rated constant).

For me, even more than the light weight, the best feature is the fast charging capability of lithium. It's fantastic. My 30a dcdc is set to 20a max generally (as per specs) but flicking it over to 30a my shunt shows the full 30a going in.

Voltx 100Ah budget LiFePO4 12v deep cycle replacement – LiFePO4 batteries are starting to take-off as drop-in replacements for lead-based deep cycle battery applications. They have the benefit of weighing about 40% of an equivalent lead-acid battery, can be deeply discharged whilst maintaining a decent number of charge/discharge cycles, maintain a higher voltage throughout their discharge curve (most… Read more ·  1

of the discharge occurs between 12.8v and 13.4v) and are capable of decent discharge rates (many examples can supply100 amps or higher continuous discharge). The problem has historically been their comparatively high price with prices well over $1000 or even $1500. Over the last few years there have been a number of budget oriented Chinese made models flooding the market and care certainly needs to be made when going down this route with under-rated poor quality cells, poor quality BMSs (battery management systems) and little after-sale support. However, consumers are finding some of these budget examples are living up to their specs (at least in the short to medium term).

This battery review is for a Voltx 100AH LiFePO4 battery with LCD and the link shows the most well known Australian seller of these (Outbax) although I purchased from another seller at about $480 (it was listed at $579 but I received nearly $100 off as an eBay plus promotion). An earlier version of these were marketing under the "Voltax" brand and received some positive views given their price but these only had a 50 amp BMS.

Build quality is good with a solid case and carry handles and screw-in terminal connectors. The LCD on this model is in theory a useful feature to get a quick idea of the state of charge but more on that later. Weight is about 12kg, which is about right for this capacity. If you were to open this, there would be padding on all sides supporting the smaller cell pack. This is normal at all price points.

Specs: 12.8v nominal and 100Ah capacity (1280 watt hours). 4 x 3.2V LiFePO4 prismatic cells in series, which is fast becoming the most common configuration. BMS is rated to maximum charge of 50 amps (0.5C) and continuous discharge of 100 amps (up from 50 in the previous model). Surge discharge is listed at 200 amps for 5 seconds (good for the surge you can get on 12 to 240v inverters). Maximum and minimum charging/discharging voltages are typical for this chemistry. The sellers claim 1500 cycle at 100% depth of discharge. Warranty is 3 years.

Testing. I have done limited testing to date but these are my early results. The battery has no issues supplying a 12v air compressor pulling 40A. I would have tried pulling a continuous 100A using an inverter but my 12 to 240v inverter died just prior to receiving this battery. I am waiting on a replacement.

Capacity test: I charged fully this using the Engel battery box on the LiFePO4 profile (at 7 amps) and ran a discharge on an Engel fridge set on freezing. A basic in-line wattmeter was used for measurement. I ceased the test at 11.8v, which is above the 11.2v low voltage disconnect for this BMS. Total discharge capacity was 107.5Ah although there may have been a couple of Ah left if was allowed to continue to 11.2v. Given most of this discharge was at above 13v, the total watt hours was close to 1400Wh (meter read 1390). This is nearly 10% higher than the rated capacity.

Obviously these are early days and longer term cell capacity retention and BMS reliability is unknown. The initial capacity test was impressive though, which means there is some room for capacity loss and still reach the rated capacity.

Other thoughts / some downsides:

1. The volt meter on my example is not very useful. It reads about 0.2v higher than actual and the percentage of charge indication is out by up to 50%. Save your money and purchase the cheaper but otherwise identical model without this. It is about $100 less as well. Mine might be a one off but I'd still avoid paying the extra.

Update: After several charge/discharge cycles the volt meter appears to be more accurate. Not sure why but a good sign.

2. Low temperature charging protection? LiFePO4 batteries are permanently damaged if the cells are charged under freezing temps and although the specs indicate charging from 0 to 50 degrees, I have not been able to personally test if the BMS prevents charging if under 0 degrees. The only way to verify this would be to attempt charging below 0 degrees. I did receive a reply to this question from Outbax, who are a major supplier of this brand, and they said the BMS does provide this function. I will test this at a later date.

3. They cannot be connected in serial but up to 4 x parallel is possible. There is a more expensive premium model with an upgraded BMS that allows multiple serial and parallel configurations. These are somewhere around $650 (up to 36 batteries can be connected).

If these continue to provide near their rated capacity in the longer term and the BMS is reliable, there is no way you would bother with lead based batteries ever again for deep cycle storage.

For the price, these get a thumbs up.

Very easy transaction, great price on the battery and charger and fast shipping. It's early days yet but the battery is performing well. I appreciated the follow-up call to confirm the items had arrived and check if there were any issues with the product, it's refreshing to find a business that values its customers. lighter and I now have sufficient power to overcome an overcast day. I have 700W of solar on the roof, but charging my AGM batteries was always a struggle. I do have a comment though: the manual that came with the batteries has insufficient information. It tells that you need a 14.6V charger, but the BMS cuts out at 14.4V. Neither is there mention of a float charge. Please update your manual. I am currently using a bulk charge of 28.4V (series) and a float of 27V, which seems to work fine for me.
