Don’t bother with this product – My indoor plants have become infested with Fungus Gnats (small annoying flies that breed prolifically in potting mix). As a keen gardener I have tried various techniques (sticky traps, minimal watering, re-potting, cinnamon powder etc. to no avail). So I tried Yates Fungus Gnat Barrier. As far as I can tell it appears to have done nothing. The sandy particles are easily displaced if you top water your plant or if you disturb the soil thereby allowing the adults access to the potting mix. Also the fungus gnats seem to inhabit the bottom of the pot as well. The product is quite expensive so I wouldn’t recommend it. Sadly I haven’t found a solution to this problem, yet!

Hi Marilyn T, We are sorry you have had this experience with our Gnat Barrier.

Unfortunately, the Gnat Barrier will not control fungus gnat infestations. It will only prevent fungus gnats from laying their larvae as a preventative measure.

Fungus gnats can complete their life cycle in approximately 4 weeks. Eggs hatch in the soil/potting-mix into larvae. These larvae then feed on plant roots. After the larvae pupates, they emerge as the winged adults. After mating, just one female can lay up to 200 - 300 eggs. Their short life cycle and high rate of reproduction is why these pests are so abundant and successful.

Repeat and timed applications of 'eco-neem' as a drench are required to ensure subsequent populations are properly controlled. Apply 'eco-neem' at least once a week for at least 4 weeks or until the infestation has been adequately controlled.

To prevent and reduce fungus gnats, make the environment less favourable by allowing the potting mix to dry out more in between waterings.

Always check the soil before watering. You can do this by inserting your index finger into the soil to the second knuckle. If it's dry, water. If it's moist, then leave watering for a few more days.

Thankyou for the info. I have researched Fungus Gnats on the web and recently found a recommendation to try Bacillus thuringiensis ‘israelensis’ (Dipel?). ?Does Yates stock this product?

Hi Marilyn, Yes we do have that product in our range but it is not approved for use on Fungus gnats or as a soil drench. You can read more about the product here; external link
