Epson Expression Home XP-400 / XP-410

It only plays up when you need it most! – I'm actually in agreement with most of the other negative comments about this printer. It tends to play up frequently, usually at critical times when you haven't got much time left to make mistakes. It freezes up quite often too and sometimes I wondered what it was actually "thinking" about when the entire machine is designed purposely and… Read more
solely for printing, and printing only. And yet it can't print very well. The ink is definitely expensive. So I started using after-market branded ink replacements. They work very well. And yet once I ran out of the aftermarket cartridges and was desperate to print some important documents so I purchased a packet of genuine Epson ink made for the 410xp. It was very expensive (about 10x the aftermarket price). The best part is after installing the genuine ink, I had all sorts of printing problems, from blurry smudged images, to lines across my text, to no images at all!! Did a head clean, nozzle clean, check this check that, then print successfully for a few pages, then all my colours went wonky (green was slightly blue, red was slightly yellow etc...). Checked ink level - all at least 90% full. I have had more problems with the printer when I used the genuine ink than with the aftermarket ones....how ironic. One of the worst printers....it was relatively cheap, but to replace the ink was awfully expensive relative to the printer. But the printer looked quite good and compact when first purchased but that impression soon wore off as the frustration took over due to all the errors and problems I had with it. I'm scarred for life with this brand. Still using it today after 4 years because can't afford a new one yet. It definitely lasts. But dont think you can save money by buying a cheap printer.
Don't buy it. It's not good printer at all – I am not satisfied at all with this printer. Never able to get it work when you need it most. Extremely unreliable. Always have some error happening. I wonder why printer companies does. It almost seem like it's on purpose Show details
Piece Of Dog Sh!# – Disgusting waste of money, constantly buying ink...may the company go broke.Soooooo painful...nozzle check, head cleaning...needs sledge hammer so I can have some satisfaction..tonight I will pour a nice glass of red and get to work on this hideous machine.
I can see why it’s discontinued – We finally smashed it to bits. Always had trouble connecting it to WiFi, so we’d have to plug it up to the computer. Then the o my way it would print was if we had brand new ink cartridges in it, because if we went so much as a month without using it, the ink would dry up. Every time I would first try to use it, I would be in the phone with… Read more
technical support for an hour at least while they would have me do a “print head cleaning” and printing test pages over And over until I’d run out of ink. Then when I purchased new ink, and replaced it, it would magically work.
Discontinued Surprise (NOT) seen the reviews! – Refuses to print in monochrome, only prints in photo or best photo option for a BW doc. Scans 1 page to a file, for readable reproduction you have a 1mb 1 page file! I would not recommend buying new or used XP 410 as the ink will cost you more than the printer for less than 200 pages Show details
Not impressed but can't find better for the price – I know you get what you pay for but I would have thought that Epson could make a printer that at least has print heads that don't clog up all the time resulting in a) constant lines across your print followed by b) excessive use of ink dues to having to constantly clean the printheads. ... or maybe this is their plan. The genuine ink is so… Read more
expensive that I feel you might as well buy a new printer when the printheads start playing up because it's cheaper than replacement cartidges and using all your ink to clean them.
I have had no connection or scanning issues and if it wasn't for the printhead problem I would be quite happy with this printer. Reading through reviews of others at about the same price, they all seem to have something wrong with them so better the devil I know.
An Average Printer – I have always had HP printers but my last one swore me off ever buying another one again because everything broke on it just out of warranty. I decided to switch to Epson and bought the XP-410 because it was a good price and looked like a good compact machine. The scanning feature is good and works well but the printing is very hit and miss. Quite… Read more
often I will print something and it is blurry or not even printing things on the page. I then have to go through multiple processes in the setup area cleaning the print head nozzles or doing head cleaning to be able to get it to print normally again. I never had this problem with any of the HP printers I bought! For this reason alone I dare say I will not be buying another Epson printer again. Also the printer cartridges are very expensive!
Not the greatest – My first one of these did not work returned for a replacement that one was good at first it printed ok not the clearest, it does go through ink including the XL ones, as you have to constantly clean nossles as they leave lines across the page. I have tried different brands still no different. its ok if you just want to print non important documents but not good for photos as its not clear. Show details
Piece of Rubbish – Will not buy again keeps getting clogged if I go away for 3 weeks the printer nozzles get choked and have spent a fortune on nozzles. Never buy an Epson again. Spend your money on anything but an Epson. Show details
Terrible printer – It can't print worth a damn and doesn't last. It constantly runs out of ink and prints way out of alignment. It prints blank pages and in backwards order too. Never have I used a worse printer than the Epson XP-400. This is a perfect example of planned obsolescence. You are forced to buy new ink constantly which is what I assume Epson wants. This is a money trap of a machine. Show details

Do not touch – Do not touch, prints poorly you end up with lines thru your page. You have to use the usb cord wont work on wifi to print or scan, now it has stopped scanning altogether. On the up side the ink tends to last awhile and cheap cartridges are avaiable thru wholesale online companies. Show details
Terrible printer – The print quality is atrocious, lines accross the page, no matter how many times I've adjust and cleaned nozzles and any other maintainence suggestion given. The lines started within months of actually getting the printer. Have to manually feed papers as has no feed drawer, which means if you leave paper in feed tray they curl and then get… Read more
jammed.
Connectivity is non existent, again a few months after purchase wifi connection started dropping out for scanning, only suggestion for trouble shooting is to uninstall/reinstall software but that gets a bit tedious after a while. Now won't scan using USB either, just becoming useless. Once inks have run out will be purchasing new and never looking at EPSON again.
Only plus is inks seem to last; but i honestly don't know if that is because I avoid using it (and pay for expensive colour prints st the library instead).

Terrible printer – Absolutely terrible printer. Will not print at all after ink change with genuine cartridges $30.00 each. epson didn't care at all. In total I probably manage to print about 20 pages. Thought I was upgrading from my $30.00 HP but I will be going back to K Mart for the cheap printer now. So disappointing - don't go near epson. Show details
Avoid at all costs – We have hardly used the Epson XP-410 due to its inability to remain connected WI/FI and its refusal to recognise touch by fingers. My parents lost the usb cable but that's not the point as it operated fine without a direct connection for a couple of months after it was purchased. Now it only shows an error message and does not function AT ALL. Show details
Worse printer ever. Will never ever buy from Epson again – This is the worse printer I have ever seen. Would give it a 0 rating if it is available. I usually buy HP printers but thought of trying out this one since they have the option to change the ink catridges individually. I never expect the ink to use up so fast even though I am not a heavy user. I only print a few invoices or statements every… Read more
month and the most annoying thing is each time when I turn on the printer I have to do alignment and clean the heads etc before I can get my documents printed out nicely.
Will never buy from Epson ever again!
Garbage – This printer is the biggest load of garbage i have ever owned. Never buy this one it has printed about 10 pages and is completely stuffed when i really need it. Worthless, Rubbish Not reliable at all. Show details
First and Last Epson – This printer won't even let you print black and white without all 3 colour cartridges installed. Therefore you need to spend $30 to $60 whenever you need a full pack of cartridges. Also frequently needs nozzle head cleaning and skips lines when printing. A total rip off. No wonder it's discontinued. Show details
Discontinued because it is the WORST printer: very expensive ink, burns ink like crazy, DO NOT BUY E – Discontinued because it is the WORST printer: very expensive ink, burns ink like crazy, DO NOT BUY EPSON!!! Several other companies (Canon for example) sell much better product.... Refills are too small and do not last. Jams too often and the action screen is very confusing. DO NOT BUY EPSON! Show details
worst ever – Shocking. All other reviews are spot on which say it doesn't actually print anything. I got a better print from my washing machine. This is a massive rip off and the ink is so expensive and you can't print when any of them run out. It's nuts. A total and utter rip off. Show details
Fixing the slow printing – My XP140 has recently started to slow down when printing, virtually freezing or not completing the printout. I have found the simple solution was to adjust the Print Ink Density setting to the minimum setting. This immediately solved my problem and it still prints copies with the full amount of black or colour. Show details
Didn't last long – May have been lucky to have it working for a year. Won't even print anything legible any more. Have tried many things to get it working properly again. Only use is for a scanner now. Very poor product. Tried Epson after getting fed up with HP printers. Will try my luck with a Canon next time. Not worth the money but I see it has been discontinued as a product anyway! Show details

Worst printer ever, DO NOT BUY – After returning the first one without printing a single page because it didn't workout of the box, the second one worked for a few months but required head cleaning all the time to avoid lines across the page which always uses a huge amount of ink. I normally only use black ink but when doing head cleaning it uses every colour, once one of the… Read more
colours is empty it will not print till it is refilled (even when selecting black and white). So I just want to print in black and white but I first need to replace all the colour cartridges which is worth more than the printer, in the bin it goes.
Ink eater as others said. Awful – I picked this up as an ex demo for only $5 so figured I had nothing to lose. My old canon just wasn't talking to the computer very well anymore and had a good run but obviously dying. I bought branded standard ink filters as it didn't come with any. printed 2 photos and about 10 pages for it to tell me ink was low! what!? Also I can really… Read more
appreciate automatic double-sided printing! as turning the pages over and reloading paper sucks. Looks like my old canon will be around for a bit yet and this thing is going to the salvos.
Terrible printer!! – This pile of junk is horrible so I'm not going to waste much time with a review. The only good thing about it is the size because it was small enough to fit in my garbage can. It is good if you love replacing ink cartridges, aligning print heads because someone shut the door too hard at the neighbor's house, trying to figure out why it won't connect, and love not being able to print in black just because one of the color cartridges is empty.
Almost easier to write it out than print it! – So many dramas. First it said low ink. So I replaced all the ink. Then it said no paper. Then the paper jammed. Then it said no ink even though I'd just replaced every cartridge! If you rarely use a printer than go for this model. The scanner is so slow too. I ended up using my phone and taking photos. Waste of time! And ink!
Ink eater and SLOW!! scanner – If you use a printer once in a blue moon and only black and white and never scan then this one is a good choice. Otherwise - this printer will use up your color ink while printing black and white and then demand you buy more color ink, even if you are only printing in black and white. The scanning is painfully slow. So slow it doesn't really… Read more
qualify as a scanner. If I could I would just throw this piece of junk against the wall. What a total rip off.
The worst printer ever – I have a Epson 400. I had continuous problems with it. A big money pit!! First it said low ink. I replaced all the ink. Then it would not print at all. When it finally decides to print it didn't print the complete page. Guess what, after printing 4 pages it said low black ink again. They should stick with making paper and not printers! It has been the worst printer I have ever had!!!
This is the worst printer I have ever had! – My ever so annoying cannon printer eventually had a scanner malfunction after 2yrs of ownership (so was stupidly talked into an Epson by nearly comatose Officeworks salesman after doing the rounds of retailers) but my Cannon was worth its weight in gold compared to this machine. It wont let you print ANYTHING if ANY ink cartridges are empty. Not… Read more
even black and white documents! ( that I mainly print for my company), unless you go through a rigmarole of only greyscale/black and white printing settings each time you print. It chews through cartridges too and it spacks out if you dont get epson printer cartridges (as they all do really). Dont buy this printer no matter how many times they say the cartridges are cheaper! (because they last like 5mins)
Don't buy one – I've had mine Epson XP-410 printer for 16 months and one month out of warranty printing is smudgy. I use the Epson cartridges and have cleaned the head numerous times. So it's going in the bin and I'll go back to using a Brother printer which has never let me down and cartridges are cheaper.
Won't print in b&w without colour ink – Works fine (although prints quite slowly) but it won't let you print in black if your colour cartridges are empty, even when set to black and white. Support pages (US website) indicate that you can get around this by changing settings but this has not worked for me. Support pages on Aus website are terrible, very basic. A little frustrating to have to buy ink I don't need. Have not had this problem with other printers. Wouldn't buy Epson again.
Epson XP 410 -Just a brilliant machine – I have always purchased HP printers for work and home. The cost of replacing a set of inks for one of my printers was near $75. Given that the machine was purchased in 2007 (still working well) I was concerned it may fail just after spending money on inks. The replacement HP has a all in one ink cartridge which means if one ink is empty, you need… Read more
to replace all inks. Not very bright HP. After comparing all the printers, I chose this Epson XP-410. It is just brilliant. It has all the usual features + Wi Fi, much easer to use than the HP and at $87 why would you purchase new inks. Oh, register on line with Epson and they give you an extra 3 months warranty. Well done Epson!!
You'll be buying ink every week – This printer is a nice compact size and looks good. However, it has proven to be quite useless and expensive to run. I bought it so that everyone in the household could print from it via WiFi, but no matter what we do it will not connect to the network. It also uses ink like it's going out of fashion and all I'm printing are a about six short… Read more
journal articles a week on average, no photos or pictures, and I'm constantly getting the 'buy ink now' alerts even immediately after I've meticulously put in the Epson brand ink cartridges... I'm so fed up. I have to buy ink every fortnight. I've tried printing in every kind of draft option available but they are all so light they're unreadable, so I'm forced to print normal text copies. It's been a total waste of time and money. I've had several other Epsons over the years and they've all been excellent, so I'm very disappointed. If you're intent on buying an Epson, it might pay to go higher up the model list and pay a bit more for something that won't be as crap as this one. I will be going with another brand next time. It used to be that buying small cheap printers was fairly failsafe, but perhaps those days are gone.
Worst printer I've ever had – I've had this printer for 15 months. The warranty was for 15mo (12mo standard + bonus 3mo). Thought I'd try something different as I've always been with Canon. This machine isn't even in the same league as Canon... slow printing, super-slow scanning, wireless function dropouts, doesn't recognise my iMac, costly ink replacements... the list goes… Read more
on.
Today (1 March 2015, and the very last day of my warranty believe it or not), the printer stopped working properly. Printouts have white banding on them. Tried auto print head clean and print head alignment and nothing. Have googled the problem and nothing.
Not worth fixing. Very cross that I spent $96 2 days ago on 4 replacement ink cartridges which are now just money wasted.
Tomorrow I'll be shopping for a new home printer and staying well clear of Epson.
Rubbish. Fights you every step of the way – Can't join the wifi network, colours are wrong despite using epson ink. It stopped me mid page to insist I change ink cartridge despite no loss of quality.
