Cooling? Not if you want to keep it clean – Just recently I've found that I'm waking frequently at night because I'm too hot - not because the room is hot (the air-con is on) but because I've… Read more

poured too much heat into the mattress and it becomes too hot.

We decided to try a cooling mattress topper and, after looking at a variety of options, chose the IKEA KNAPSTAD one.

The topper comes all compressed down into a 16.5kg roll (king size) and is made of a 5cm layer of memory foam with a removable cover. The cover has one side which is cooling (summer) and one which is not (winter). I don't actually understand why the cover is removable though because it cannot be washed (according to the paperwork that accompanied it).

Once on the bed we tried it for five nights just under the sheet, it wasn't great but not too bad. However, because I sweat at night, we were concerned about the hygiene aspect since it cannot be washed.

The paperwork said it could be placed beneath a mattress protector so we tried that last night - a very bad move! The protector negated any cooling effect from the topper, meaning that I had a lousy night's sleep, unable to get cool, I'm absolutely k####ered.

The topper went back to IKEA this morning!

Initially they wanted to to give us a credit note as the item will now have to be thrown away (mattresses, toppers, pillows, etc. cannot be resold apparently). Poor design we think, it should have been made washable.

We argued that there was nothing to say about credit only on the item, receipt or website and that we wouldn't have bought it if that were the case, certainly not at $449! Technically it could be argued that the item was not fit for purpose and therefore a refund due, since it said it could be used under a protector, but cannot if you want the cooling effect.

Under the circumstances they relented and gave us a refund.
