I purchased a set of 4 x 225/45R17 91 W tyres for a Honda Civic Hatch , to replace a set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres of the same size, but with a Y… Read more

rated speed index. The retailer was Jax Tyres.

Before making the purchase, I first researched General Tire, ( Note the U.S. spelling ) and found that the company has been in existence for over a century, and are now part of the Continental A.G. Group. The Alimax’s were designed and engineered in the USA, however I am not sure where they were made. According to the General Tire website their tyres are made in the same factories that manufacture Continental branded tyres.

The tyres are advertised as having an inbuilt wear marker, which appears on the tread of the tyre when it wears down to the minimum safe limit.

The price for the set of General’s was some $400 cheaper than a replacement set of Michelin Pilot Sport 5’s. So that was a plus.

I have now driven over 8,000 kms on the General Altinax’s and the 1st thing I noticed was just how quiet they are, Road noise in almost none existent.

Wet weather grip is good, as good as any tyre made by any of the major well known brands that I have used in the past, and dry weather grip is excellent.

The only point I cannot comment on is tyre life. That will be determined over time.

Would I buy another set of the General Altima GS5 tyres? At that price? Yes. They are great “ bang for the buck.”
