Perfect for office, surfing, it will do 720p youtube, play 1080p video files using VLC. Upgrades cost him $217 in parts and lots of coffee in his cafe. Gives me something to do in lock down!

The laptop that could – Hi! After my Toshiba laptop died in 2013, my lovely girlfriend and I found ourselves with the dilemma of having to use my girlfriends old Acer Aspire 5315. This laptop, in its factory build configuration with Celeron 550 processor has the laptop equivalent of emphysema.. It was slow running Windows XP, let alone its factory- installed Windows… Read more ·  6

Vista Basic...

However..

After a bit of reading, I discovered that the Aspire 5315 is actually highly upgradeable... You can replace just about every part you can think of... I thought upgrading a laptop sounded like crazy talk, but I decided to give it a go on a tightwad budget...

So I did the following work: 1. Installed Samsung 840 SSD from my dead Toshiba. 2. Upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 2GB (This laptop has a max of 3GB but that is not a reliable configuration) 3. Installed an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 CPU - $15 dollars on eBay. 4. Upgraded from Windows XP (it came with Vista basic stock) to Windows 8.1 - $30 dollar upgrade special 5. Installed the Wireless-N card from my dead Toshiba.

Total spend was $50 dollars inc parts ($5 CPU paste) and labor ($0)

It has proven under its revised configuration to be a solid workhorse for all of those tasks that 99% of us do, such as using Microsoft World and surfing the Internet. Running Windows 8.1, so at least it "looks" like a newer computer to use. My girlfriend has no complaints and despite the arrival of our 27 inch iMac, still uses it from time to time.

Running games on it would be a bit sketchy. Video playback can be a bit touch and go. In other words, the GPU still sucks, and sadly this is the one part you cannot change.

Its certainly no Macbook Air - it is a brick of a thing, and it gets warm...

Considering that the machine was considered by all accounts rubbish in 2009 when it was new [link removed], the fact that it is still running in 2015, albeit under a revised configuration, certainly proves that Acer is capable of building some reliable hardware.

Last word - I wrote this review on the Acer Aspire 5315.

Simple fault has rendered my machine useless – Whilst it worked I really liked my laptop. It performed well. A few months out of warranty the power jack became loose and stopped working. This meant I couldn't charge the battery any more. Acer offered to asses and then repair the damage even out of warranty. I though this was excellent. Once I received the laptop back again the repair job was… Read more

not well done and still very loose it did however charge. I reported my opinion of the repair job and expressed concern that it would not last long. I was told it would be fine. A few months later it wouldn't charge again. This time I was told I would need to pay for the repairs myself, the cost being comparable to purchasing a laptop of similar quality brand new. I disputed and lost.

I sadly now have a wasted laptop. it doesn't work and I don't want to through it away.

Seems a little strange to me. Acer would have made a loyal customer of me if they had simply repaired it once and well or at least twice and getting it right the second time............now I chose to buy a different brand.

I don't think I would chance an Acer laptop or pc in the future.

Good if you can get more RAM and a new operating system for it – I bought mine in October 2007 from Officeworks for about $750. I could have got $150 cash back but was so busy that I missed out. Its RAM was the minimum speed for Vista, that they were selling it with. However, if I had two programmes open at the same time e.g.: Word and Internet Explorer (with one tab - Yahoo email open), it wouldn't handle… Read more

it and would freeze up and crash.

I complained to ACER who have extremely bad customer service (not the customer service officer's fault - it't the proceedures they have to follow). They told me to restore it. That took three hours. It didn't fix it. Over six months I rang about four times, and each time they told me to restore it. After about two months I went to Officeworks, only to be told it was too late for them to want to do anything for me. I gave up.

After eight months, I had to go to study for a month overseas. I rang a ACER again and told them that they Will fix it this time, and I won't waste another three hours restoring it. I had a very lovely customer service guy. He said to try Officeworks one last time. I did, and got another manager. This new manager said that they have trouble with ACER all the time, and it wasn't worth his while to send the laptop into them. His solution was to tell me to take the laptop for a RAM upgrade and then bring in the receipt to him.

I got the RAM doubled and that fixed it. Vista was awful though. About six months later, I had a geek boyfriend, who put Windows Seven on it and reconfigured it, and now it works very well.

The battery hasn't got long life though. This many years on, it will only last about 30-40 minutes. I just keep it plugged in unless I need to take it with me on the train for something urgent.

Skype wasn't very good on it, but I only tried a few times and that might have been the internet connection. All I know is that Skype runs like a dream on my boyfriend's HP Pavillion dm4.

My geek boyfriend and my nerd friend both think I should get a new one, but it is fine for the internet and Word, which is all I need it for. Cheap You need to upgrade the RAM for it to work

Terrible – We purchased the Acer prior to embarking on a 6 month trip in Australia. The reason being to email home, and record our travel journal. Very early into our trip, the typed letters would end up anywhere in the text, necessitating having to watch the screen constantly. We just returned from a 4 month trip and despite it being repaired and… Read more

'thoroughly' tested on two occasions, we experienced the exact same problem and had to return it for the third time. This time they replaced the hard drive, and keyboard. We did suggest an upgraded replacement, but this was not forthcoming. Consequently I am now typing up my journal on the home computer, and if I wanted to send a lenghthy email, I had to used an internet cafe- so it was a complete waste of time and money, and I would never purchase an Acer of any description in the future. Neat and light, and a good price The inability to use it whilst travelling for purpose intended, with ongoing problem using keyboard

Good – I am using this model everyday and I am very happy with it.The battery is still ok and with Acer Empowering software you can extend the battery life and working time on battery and also the display life. Very good laptop.I did not have problem with it since I bought it (around 2 years).I like very much the display which it is really very bright… Read more

and I use the contrast on maximum only when I am looking on movies or I stay outside an it is a lot of sun. Also I like the built in camera, the microfon and the wireless connection. As soon as you buy it you can start the chat with your friends.Because of the processor it is never overheating to much and does not take to much energy when you run on battery. First thing I did: took out Vista and install win xp pro sp3.With Vista is running very slow.

Good – I bought this when the cashback was on and did receive my money back making it a very attractive price (from memory it took around 6-8 weeks) I use this as my personal computer and although it can be a little slow with vista it's not painful and you can upgrade the ram (which I will be doing soon) Overall I'm quite happy with for the price price bright screen light coloured keyboard can be slow with vista weighs a bit

Terrible – The unit is supposed to have a $150 cash back. We sent all the requested documents on time and waited several months and no cash back or reply. We logged into the website and it said our claim was denied. The cash back is a huge scam. Do not buy ACER!!! Purchased on price as a homework compter for a teenager. Cash back is a rip off!! Runs very slow with VISTA. Lots of freeze ups.

If they can give a cash back offer why cant that amount just come off the price in the first place. It sure is a huge rip off!!! I got caught too.
