Discontinued for a reason – Just a piece of crap really. Charging cable/batteries issues never stop. The mouse pointer randomly jumps around like its got lag or something, for a laptop if paid $1500 for, sort of expected more but i guess thats what happens when you dont go with Apple. Go with Apple and avoid the pain.  Show details

Worst laptop ive ever owned – Absolute trash. First problem 3 months in the charging cable failed, Harvey Norman claimed its not under warranty and wanted to charge me $80 (Auburn store avoid) but luckily i rang asus and they sent me a new one exchange for free as it is obviously covered by warranty. The mouse freezes all the time and needs a restart since new. After 12 months… Read more

it has a line down the screen and have to keep moving the lid to clear it, and now finally after leaving it off for 2 weeks while away in holidays i come home to find the battery has died and i get the plugged in not charging message.

Absolute worst laptop ever. Do not buy an asus. Ive always had toshibas until this one and will be trying a hp next i think soon.

Brilliant - with a couple of drawbacks – Numeric keypad is not full size and I'm used to working with numbers and not having to look at the keypad; my muscle memory doesn't work on the smaller, less spaced arrangement - I didn't notice this when I bought it though so my mistake No bluetooth - also didn't notice this when I bought it It could do with a backlit keyboard to make it more… Read more

Having said the above I've been extemely satisfied with the performance of this laptop. I've had it for 3 years now and no problems. My mousepad isn't working well but I dropped something very heavy on it by mistake - ooops!

Overall this is a great laptop and I would recommend it but would be sure to advise of the lack of bluetooth

Its just brilliant !!!!!!!!!! for only 499 SGD – From QOO10, I purchased a refurbished Asus, for just $499 Singapore Dollars. Had some issues at first, with Windows Update, so downloaded WSUS and ran all the windows updates, removed mcaffee and other software, and now its perfect. Used for about 1 month. Installed AOMEI free for backups, set out my partitions.. and we are good. From notebook… Read more

The FX-7600P was the fastest mobile Kaveri AMD APU in 2014. Which is why I bought it. Its not crazy top of the charts performance wise, but it runs games ok,,, and is a superb everyday laptop.. My other Asus X53Z A6-3420m (3 yrs old) is now like the baby sister. Both have 1TB drives, and run very smooth... I'm sticking with Asus and AMD quad cores for the time being .... ;]

OMG!! Worst computer I have ever owned – My husband and I purchased two of these computers and thought they were great for the first 10 months, then we both had problems. At the 11 month point, we took them both back to Harvey Norman for warranty work (just within the 12 month warranty period). My husband's keyboard - some keys weren't working so they updated the OS and Drivers and… Read more

that seemed to fix his problem. But with mine - the whole motherboard and hard drive were completely fried! Thankfully they were fixed under warranty and after a bad case of customer service from the sales rep at Harvey Norman, the manager contacted me and said that if I ever had any other problems with these laptops, to let him know, even if it was after the warranty period, and he would deal with it personally. Well, I am now going to have to contact him about this - 18 months later, my husband's motherboard and hard drive have also completely 'fried'. We have been having non stop problems with the power cables and I can see that this is a common factor from other reviews. I thought the noise from the CD/DVD player was normal, but can now see from other reviews that other people are also having problems with this as well. We bought these as a long term investment, hoping not to have to replace them for at least the next 4 years. This is just absolutely ridiculous and I will most definitely be steering clear of any ASUS products from now on.

Is to so much to ask to be able to play a CD? – We bought this laptop because I have a ultrabook and we don't have a DVD player or CD player. My husband's faithful Toshiba finally needed an upgrade. Windows 10 means that we can no longer play iTunes through our speaker for some reason, so we've reverted back to CDs on vlc player by the way. The CD driver on this Asus works occasionally. makes intense spinning noises a lot of the time when the CD goes in. We've already tried brand new DVDs in there and it doesn't work. We've taken it back to Harvey Norman where we bought it and it's been to Asus repairs.... It's worked a little more often now but still plays up a lot of the time. After buying a brand new laptop (and it seems paying a lot more than other people on this forum), it would be really nice just to be able to play a CD, without getting infuriated.

Good for an anchor and nothing else – Most useless excuse for a computer I have seen that can't do basic tasks. Unstable and likes to go to ASUS for repairs that don't make it any better. Once replacing the power supply enabled it to be turned on again but didn't make it work. After 13 months it stopped working. Even my kids wouldn't use it. I'm now wondering what to do with it since… Read more

pile of junk – The F550L replaced my old faithful Toshiba Satellite that served me well for about 5 years. It was due for an upgrade. I'd been impressed with ASUS motherboards and graphics cards in my desktops, seemed good bang my buck as far as speed and features go, so I spent $1200 on one. I'm typing this review from my resurrected Toshiba for the following… Read more

reasons....

Inbuilt touchpad mouse is next to impossible to use.

One of the motivations for buying it is because it had a dedicated Nvidia graphics card. May as well not, it's too slow for any game with half decent graphics or 3D applications

Not long after it was out of warranty:

First the computer randomly would just shut down.

The battery started dying, a couple of months later it completely died

Screen started flickering with random colours appearing along the bottom edge. Have to literally twist/flex the screen to see dark colours

Now it's hanging every 10 minutes. Usually starts up from BIOS screen

Very disappointing.

In the mean time my old Toshiba Satellite L300 is still going strong...

It's a laptop Fullstop – Look, I've had mine for 2 years now, and think it's plenty of time to give a proper review. Asus gives you all the features you need to use for work, study or personal. CDs/DVD work well and nothing is complicated to get to ie: settings. I would recommend for teenagers and good enough for retirees.

Asus F550LDV-XO870H Owner – Have had this laptop for over a year now (windows 8.1pro). CURRENTLY running like a dream, most of my games run well however this is not a gaming laptop, very reliable and portable, light in weight, smooth sleek design, sound output is great 8/10 and the visual display clarity 9/10. Touch-pad is an impressive size more than enough space for the fingers and the laptop charger is light in weight as well as small in size.

Nice and fast with a few limitations – I bought this unit to replace a tiring Toshiba A200 that I bought years back. Unfortunately in this day and age it was not up to par with video streaming, video capture, fast file transfer. So I needed to bite the bullet and upgrade. For the price at the time $1300 it was sitting mid-range among other competitors. Manly because of the AMD… Read more

hardware. First off, this guy was much faster than my dual core 1.6Ghz laptop. Boasting AMD A10 processor, Radeon HD8670M 2GB graphics, couple of USB3.0 ports, 16GB RAM and 1TB drive, DVD burner, HDMI out, Gigabit LAN, single band wifi b/g/n - at the time dual 2.4/5Ghz A band was coming in. Would have been nice to have. I didn't think I could fill up that drive but I just about have. The biggest disappointment was windows 8 being installed. Nothing to do with the laptop.

I needed something that could process video and music - fast. And this pretty much does that. I'll run a TV stick and video capture. All work flawlessly with this laptop. Even when I'm crunching and converting video, it can do it relatively fast and mostly doesn't even max out the quad cores when capturing.

The unit is light - half the thickness and weight of my Toshiba. Would have been good to have to have a few extra USB3.0 ports. Came with 1 USB 2.0 port than I use for a 2.4GHz mouse receiver. You'd think by now they'd have that built in? I just connect a USB3.0 HUB and run everything off that (most things are still USB 2.0 except drives). Makes it easy to keep everything connected.

A couple of negatives are that occasionally the laptop freezes for a second or two when accessing the HD (maybe because it's getting to capacity or just a bloated windows install). And again, some programs seem to take a little longer to load from startup (I'll put it down to HD). The built in mouse pad can be a bit shoddy and not respond as it should (moving erratically). The swipe gestures don't seem to work too well either. I really just use a mouse when I can.

Pros: Fast, light weight, good graphics, great for video crunching (slower than a desktop though), no reliability issues yet (after 18 months)

Cons: Mouse pad issues, freezing during HD access, keyboards a little hard to navigate, no 5GHz wifi access, only 2 USB3.0 ports (2xUSB3.0 & 1 USB2.0)

It was good for a year, and then the problems were endless – This laptop was good for the first year of its life. It performed well for my school work and I could play games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Medium to High Settings, and usually around 25-30 FPS. higher rating.

After one year (right after the warranty ended, mind you), I encountered a series of problems. At first, I lost sound completely. After reinstalling driver after driver and programs that could 'fix' it, I gave up and refreshed my computer. This fixed the sound problem, and my laptop was as its original state.

Unfortunately, this calm only lasted a few weeks before I encountered a whole storm of problems that have not been fixed. These problems include:

1. A faulty monitor that constantly flickers at the tiniest of movements. I have to use it at my desk all the time which prevents me from using it on my lap if I am in bed or in a car/bus.

2. The laptop will randomly turn on and off. Sometimes, while I am in class my laptop will turn on in my case without being touched. Other times while I am playing video games, it will switch off for no reason. Like before, this is without being touched.

3. An unresponsive keyboard that prevents me from doing schoolwork. I was forced to buy a cheap, plug-in keyboard as multiple keys (including every number, the backspace key and multiple letters) ceased to work.

4. Possibly the most annoying of all these problems, is that screws would begin to come loose and fall out. Often this would be at school while I was using it, resulting in me never finding them again and having loose pieces of plastic flailing about. This also caused my battery to come loose, and so I had to use tape to hold it in place.

Please note that my laptop has never received any significant trauma, in fact the only time it has been dropped was when it slipped off a desk onto a chair, a meager 10-11 centimeter drop. This was about three months in from owning the laptop and no problems arose after it fell so it can't possibly have been this.

Please be very wary of buying from Asus, I am certain that I never will again. This is a disgusting excuse for a laptop, and I feel terrible about the money that was wasted in buying this piece of crap.

Great laptop with a few minor flaws – Bought this laptop refurbished from a reputable seller on eBay. Came like brand new with a few minor wear marks just as he said in the description. So far for the price I paid for this laptop ($530 shipped) I'm loving it. Aside from a few Asus programs and McAfee virus software windows was clean. I'll start off with the good. First things… Read more

first the battery life is great. I can get 6-7 hours on power saver mode and around 1 hour on high performance mode whilst gaming. As for temperatures, this laptop stays extremely cool to touch with no hot spots where your hands rest. When gaming the bottom right of the laptop does get a little warm, along with the vent for the cooling on the left right side of the laptop. The CPU does reach 90 degrees Celsius whilst gaming in some cases but somehow isn't noticeable to touch, i also didn't notice any thermal throttling. The GPU on the other hand stays reasonably cool. During a long gaming session the GPU never reaches temps in excess of 85 degrees Celsius and also hasn't been throttling itself. Boost clock stays at 1058MHz during gaming and memory at 800MHz according to MSI afterburner.

For the sound, i was quite impressed. After turning off the "Music Mode" which boosts bass and treble and makes everything sound 'echoey' it was quite nice. I Can't hear any noise from the headphone jack whatsoever with my Sennheiser HD558's and the sound is very clean. I haven't yet got an external DAC for my headphones so the only thing i have to compare them to is my desktop PC using the onboard sound from my ASRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3. The sound-stage from the laptop is noticeably larger and the bass is much more profound and tight. I expected the mids to be subdued and bass and treble to be louder but this was not the case. The highs are extremely crisp and the mids are beautiful, vocalist sound warm and clear exactly as they need to be. The laptop doesn't get as loud as i would like, but for quality listening it is fine. I am extremely impressed by the sound of this laptop.

I was extremely happy by the build quality of this laptop. Considering it's size and that it is made entirely out of plastic, this thing has little to no flex. The screen does of course flex but not to the extent of many other laptop displays I have encountered.

As for the bad, I'll start with the display. It's a TN panel. Horizontal viewing angles are acceptable however vertical viewing angles aren't the best. There is noticeable color and contrast shift when tilting the screen, as to be expected though. I can't really comment on color reproduction as I don't have any great monitors or other displays to compare to but colors definitely aren't as deep as i would like.

The touch-pad sucks in my opinion. There is noticeable input lag when using the touch-pad but plug in a mouse and all is well. The gestures work pretty well, recognizing scroll and zoom well. The touch-pad does not do well with palm rejection, and will sometimes zoom in or out my webpages are click somewhere on the screen whilst i am typing and cause my typing to stop. I don't like the way Asus chose to build the left and right click into the whole touch-pad. Sometimes i will go to click and end up clicking and dragging what i was trying to click. The click has nice nice tactile 'click' to it though.

The keyboard. It's ok, the keys feel a bit mushy but they aren't horrible to use. Every now and then one of the keys won't register, usually when doing a double letter but it hasn't been a huge inconvenience. It would be nice if Asus used the f3 and f4 key for song next and previous instead of leaving them blank, but it doesn't bother me to much.

If you can find this laptop for under $800 i think it's a steal. Great battery life. great performance with great temps, great sound and great build quality. For the price it's awesome. Cheers for reading

No mouse buttons, just this creaky panel at the bottom of the mouse pad, which i reckon will last about a week. the panel/button bit doesn't trigger reliably or sometimes at all: you get left click or right click or neither depending on where you are. Feels extremely cheap, which is a surprise as the keyboard feels good. I do a lot of cutting and pasting from different docs (lots of editing work) so this is a big deal for me.

Might be a sign that the touchscreen version is the way to go, though you're then locked into using the apps page. And that doesn't help with cutting and pasting stuff.

In terms of display, I am rather pleased with it. I have a matte screen which is barely any different from an LED backlit one. The keyboard is quiet and responds well. However the touchpad mouse is a disaster. After three hours of using it, the touchpad does not respond properly; I have to scroll with the up and down keys or plug in my mouse.
