Excellent mile muncher
I am 61 years young.
I bought my R1150RT after much searching for an affordable Beemer.
I found a 2001 model 10 minutes from home.
I wanted a red one having ridden one 7 years prior but never bought it.
Side panniers and top box were in good condition.
This one had 150000kms on it and no service history.
I read about all the horror stories.
A bike won't get to 150000kms without being looked after.
I rode it about 5 kms and bought it.
It's a different bike from my Harley Fat Bob or my Suzuki C109 but I expected it to be....
Excellent love it
I bought a r1150rtp this was ex Tasmanian military , it had only done 13000 kms in 12 years. Had a full service done when I bought it the mechanic said he could find one tiny scratch on the side of the fairing otherwise it looked like a new bike. We bought this model because my wife was more comfortable on this than the later r1200rt, we also changed the pillion pegs to foot plates, after a knee replacement she has only 90' bend and foot plates allow more comfort. I also put a touring screen on as the original at full height still had the wind ...hitting the top of my helmet, now it's fantastic ,I reckon you could have a cigarette at 100 kmh. Riding is super comfortable even two up, but it is a tourer so don't expect to keep up with the boy racers, it's a bit like riding a luxury Mercedes there is power when you need it but it does everything so easily and comfortably you don't need to thrash it. It's far better than the Harley I had and half the price, I now laugh at them rattling the walls as they try to catch up to me.
An armchair that handles well
An excellent touring bike. Weather protection, equipment and comfort all top class. Handles very well and the suspension is very good at soaking up bumps while remaining stable. About 50 mpg in touring mode. Feet up u-turns are a doddle. The adjustable screen is very handy - up for full protection and down for a cooling breeze. Top gear is a bit too tall below 60mph but fine above. The seat needs to be raised at the front by about 10mm to stop you sliding forward and this can be achieved by adding some washers under the front seat mount . I hav...e bar-backs which allow me to sit upright and would recommend them for shorter riders. The gearbox is the only flaw. A very relaxing bike for long distances. Comfort, manageability, luggage and equipment, road presence. Gearbox is a bit clunky. Top gear a bit too tall.
I used to have an BMW R65, and was very happy with it. Decided to get a new bike so went for the best, the R1150RT. I am very pleased with this bike. I have now done 35K Mls. so far, and it has never missed a beat or let me down. I love the look of the bike and although it seems big, it is a real kitten when rolling along. On the motorways the bike is quick and responsive and feels safe because it feels under your control all the time, in all conditions. It is a car with two wheels. It pulls like a train, and handles great on the bends. Would I...buy another? Of course, no hesitation. Advice: make sure you can trust the BMW mechanic that works on your bike, or do it yourself to make sure it is done correctly. I have had some BMW servicing that has been very suspect, which is a pity because the BMW service charges are a rip off price, so one should expect the servicing should be done correctly, and at a standard second to none. Comfort on long trips, and I still feel refresh after a long days riding. The bike is happy to roll along at 25-30 MPH when in built up areas, where the Jap bikes only want to do MAX speed all the time and cough and splutter at low speeds. Seems to have certain problem areas with equipment design faults. e.g. The spark plug coils go faulty after 25Kmls due to excessive heat from cylinders. New ones are better and re-designed, so I don't expect to have to buy another pair soon. Also starter motor has gone faulty after 34Kmls. Design uses poor glue to hold coils in place, so dismanteling and re-gluing should fix problem.
Having just completed a 70 mile trip on dual lane roads running at 70/80 mph. I felt very happy with the 1150rt. It felt secure and safe at these speeds and during a period of heavy rain I raised the screen a little which kept me dry and my visor clear. I was impressed. I use the bike daily to commute to work and although not a very experienced rider (2yrs.) I'm happy to lane split.To date my only reservations have been with the gear change with I think I have now solved, and the oil level window, which caused some concern as the oil level was ...not apparent as the oil level was above the window. I did an oil change filling to the correct level and now the oil level is clear in the window. Mike Wilson This is a bike which feels stable and comfortable under most conditions handling poor road surfaces and strong winds in its stride with excellent brakes.The gear indicator is very useful, and I like the paddle indicator control, although the head light flash switch is not so convienient. My bike is a 2002 RT single spark and does surge up to 3000 rpm at light thottle openings.I hope to tune the engine to improve this situation. The gear change is tricky to achieve a smooth change and after 3 months of ownership I have found to pre load the lever before each change (up and down shift) makes the shift much better.This is a big bike and demands respect and it takes time to adjust to the seat height.
This is the best motorbike produced by BMW. An all rounder that is as capable for touring as it is for a daily commute. Good weather protection and when you get used to it, quite easy to handle.
Dissapointed as I thought I was buying a top marque motorcycle. BMW dealer was not able to rectify the poor idleing at slow speeds. Would't buy another one and has put me off of thinking about buying the new R1200 RT which is a pity as I like the look of this new model.
Comfortable seating position and handling on corners
Too many quality issues, front forks corroding after a year, new gearbox @ 12,000 miles, condensation in headlamp and other clocks, inacurate fuel gauge, poor running at slow speed (twin spark model) difficult to fill up to the top with fuel, leaking pannier.
It is a great bike and you can feel it after a long distance of riding, especailly when you compare with the Japanense touring bike.

A really nice bike, reasonably economical and comfortable after several hours riding, good wind protection from the faring. easy to get onto the centre stand in spite of the weight.
Plenty of power, handles nicely in the twisty bits, light gearchange,the colour (Blue), everything
a bit tall for me when stopped but I've gotten used to it after a few weeks.
Questions & Answers
What does the motronics fuse regulate? It kept blowing. Especially when revs are high and dropped suddenly. I reset the electronics, like when you change the battery, and hasnt had the problem again, but am not sure whether this was the issue to deal with?
How many years BMW produced R1150RT!???!
2002 BMW R1150RT with 117,000 kms.
An otherwise excellent bike, however occasionally experiences a Total Electronic Power Loss when changing Gears.
No rhyme or reason (Shifting Up - Shifting Down) just out of the blue all power cuts, and I have to Press the Start Button to wind her up again.
As mentioned above, an otherwise excellent, problem free Dream Bike?
