  Dolphin

We bought our BYD dolphin about a year ago and we like the car although there have been some small challenges that were slow to be fixed. Not really a problem just minor annoyance. Recently we have been unable to charge the car with the charger that came with the car. It has taken 4 days and many many calls and emails (and as you can imagine serious frustration) to finally get an appointment to have the car looked at and it will take another week before we can find out why it isn't charging and hopefully have it fixed. And we were told that if the charger that came with the car is faulty it is not covered under warranty (which is for 1 year only) it would cost $1000.00 for a new charger.

Seriously not happy. I don't think I have ever worked with a car company that has been so slow to respond.

I guess it is a good car but I would not buy another.

BYD dont do service – The car is easy to drive and handles well. I use it for short trips around the city, longer drives with the family and occasionally for trips away. The design is not good for Australian summers because the sunroof and huge windscreen make the cabin really hot. Service by BYD is well below the standard offered by other major car makers. BYD do not staff their own service centres instead offering pop-up service locations attached to other brands. Without enough trained staff, BYD customer service is very disappointing with staff more keen on long stories of their problems and no attention to fixing their customer's issues.

A hole popped in the driver's seat within 2 months of me buying the car. A year later BYD now tell me they won't fix it.

The air conditioner started blowing hot air during a heatwave. BYD said they could book it in to "look at your problem" in 2 months. After 2 days of exhausting protests, I was offered a courtesy car while my car sat in the yard by a service centre. I still have not heard back.

I like the car. I hate the lack of service.

Amazing little EV – Bought in early Dec ‘23 to replace my aging Kia. So far the Dolphin has exceeded my expectations in 5.5 months and over 15,000km. The interior styling is funky and different, without being BYD’s battery tech is class leading for safety, longevity and performance. Running costs are drastically cheaper, costing an average $5 per 100km. I’ve saved well over a thousand dollars in charging vs petrol in my old car.

AC charging can be a little slow at 7kW, but since I charge overnight at home, that not a big deal, fast charging is better at 90kW. I’ve never been left wanting for handling and performance.

On super long road trips (1200km Sydney to Broken Hill in a single day), the car was super comfortable and the semi-autonomous driving made the trip a lot more enjoyable/relaxing.

OTA updates continually improve on an already great car.

The only con/s I can think of are:

A/C charging speeds are a little slow. Substandard LingLongs tyres fitted from the factory. Rather pointless servicing requirements. No spare tyre (only a can of goop).

Purchased in at BYD Australia for $46,490.

Positively love the Dolphin – Impressive quality interior. Comfortable and responsive drive. Happy to report none of the safety aids appear overly zealous and do exactly what they are supposed to. Brilliant drive.

Nice car with a premium feel – Nice car to drive and super quiet on the motorway. Overall I like the car and we don’t want to pay for petrol anymore But it take 24hours to fully charge at home!
