I purchased a G4600 in Jan 2019. The printing was off so I did a system clean (BLK) but now it is now showing a 5B00 error. Can it be fixed and how much?

The 5B00 error can be fixed, it is tricky but there are a number of videos on YouTube so you can do it yourself. I have done it on my G4600 by following that advice. I would recommend that you check the CCIS tubes and look for air blockages. YouTube also has videos to provide assistance in removing these blockages.

This is the worst printer I have ever purchased and you know what I wouldn’t even have one as a freebie if it was offered to me by Canon!!!

Why does my Canon pixma g4600 printer print pages that shows it’s out of ink even though the ink cartridges are more than half full?

Open the printer and look at the 'ink feed lines' - you may see that there are 'air blockages' in one or more of the feed lines i.e. the 'ink feed line(s)' does not have a continuous flow of ink in it and this can also be the cause of the error code I mentioned in an earlier post as I have found out. There is an art to filling the ink tanks - don't let them run completely dry. There are some quite good help videos on YouTube (search g4600, continuous ink system, air blockage etc., even the error code you are seeing) - which show how to remove the 'air blockages' and highlights fixes to other problems. Hope this assists.

Does anyone have experience with the statutory warranty on printers? I am in contact with Fair Trading and will also contact ACCC, any advice would be appreciated as Officeworks were no help at all.

I have used a few of the older model Canon Printers / scanners over the years IX5000, MP600, MP700, MX800 series and they all die after a few years even if you don't use them very much. They have a very good printing quality when working but have a built in obsolescence programmed into the firmware, the printheads stops working (usually the black) or it displays an error code that can't be reset and nothing functions anymore, can't even use it as a scanner.
