Reliable, feature rich product
Our DCS-5222L has been serving us more than 2.5 years now. When we first bought it, we had problems with firmware updates and that rendered the camera inoperable and we had it replaced. We don't jump to the first chance of upgrading firmware anymore. This copy has been reliable and my dogs haven't destroyed it. That says something.
No, it is not for outdoors, it is not vandal proof, it is a bit bulky. But on the plus side, there are plenty of them! It tilts-n-pans. You can preset several camera positions and jump to them quickly. It records...to microSD card, it is backed by mobile app and we can watch it anywhere. It can take still snaps or videos clips, it can do two-way audio. Of course the sound volume straight out of the camera is low and sounds like an old telephone. But I have conversed with my wife using it before. It does work. It doesn't auto focus, nor does it do optical zoom. But given its small sensor, depth of view is pretty big and is good enough for indoors. It is HD but not full HD, limited at 720p. It does audio and motion detection and it does email notification. We are very happy with it. If it wasn't because we had to return the first copy and firmware issues we had at the beginning, I would have given it 5 stars. It is not small like some of the newer products in the market. So it isn't inconspicuous.
Painful setup, non existent support! Save yourself the torment.
Purchased this unit after it was recommended by a friend. Unfortunately the setup instructions were not comprehensive and I had to call India for what was one of the most painful conversations of my life. The girl was struggling to understand and was providing incorrect information. After getting very frustrated and two hours with the set up we got somewhere and I was told it should be fine, or to call back. It's three weeks later, we have our two day old baby and this is still not working. Cannot view online or via the app. I called the suppor...t line and was cut off three times. Am now on hold and have been for almost 30 mins!! If this is how they treat customers I'd strongly encourage you to look elsewhere and save your stress levels. Not as easy as I was led to believe and a shocking experience all round. I'll be returning this and choosing another brand who is accessible and can get me online to make sure my bag is safe.
Worth the Money
I was in the market for a baby monitor and couldn't find any that had any type of HD resolution. This was the main reason why I chose the D-Link DCS-5222L. It is capable of 720p and it doesn't disappoint.
I'm able to move it around anywhere in the house as its setup on my wireless router, power is the only thing I need to plug in.
It comes with a few accessories including a remote control and a steel plate for mounting. This means as soon as I stop using it as a baby monitor, I can mount it on the ceiling and use it as a surveillance came...ra. The frame rate over wireless isn't perfect, but considering its transmitting a 720p video signal over Wireless N, it's still pretty efficient. I have my wireless router setup towards the end of my house and the camera is in the front, a distance of roughly 20 meters. I have also tested the camera in a room closer to the router (roughly 10 meters) and the frame rate is perfect at 720p. From memory there are four different resolutions to choose from, so you shouldn't have any issues. The pan and tilt function is awesome and the delay is very minor between pressing a button on your Internet browser and the camera actually moving. Zoom is purely digital, so it will pixelate as soon as you use it, not a huge issue though.
