Still a reasonable computer – With its i7 processor, even a 2 year old Vostro 3500 is a quite useful laptop, and would be worth picking up second hand if you want decent laptop power on a budget, or need a good emergency device. With an LCD backlit screen and switchable graphics, it gets useful life from the standard 6 cell battery, but the optional 9 cell battery gives a very usable 3-4hrs. On the other hand, as the extra cells project below the base of the laptop, it is not an ideal setup for resting on your lap.

However, the big drawback of the Vostro is that it runs very hot, so using it for any length of time on a lap is unpleasant.

Lack of USB 3.0 is a drawback, but everything else is there.

Keep it in mind if you need decent grunt, reasonable graphics and usable off-mains durability in a fairly rugged format.

My only other irritation is that the neat, slim-line power supply unit doesn't have well-protected cables, and the insulation gives up after a time. Rugged, speedy enough and good battery life on the 9 cell unit. Runs hot, big battery digs into knees, lack of USB 3.0
