I have one of these 13Kw Genesis Heaters and it does work to a degree I suppose, but I do have problems with it. 1) It seems very noisy since you have to run on Hi and boost to get the pool warm in three or 4 days. Too noisy to run at night for neighbors and since my bedroom is 25 metres from it I hear it and it keeps me awake. It does not seem to have any sound proofing which may be the reason for the noise?

2) Adjusting the water flow is a trial, too much or too little makes the machine sense an over or under pressure, gives an error code and cuts off. Finally found a setting that sort of works.

3) Instruction booklet very poor, Wifi so difficult to set up, instructions have you going around in circles and generally don't explain anything.

4) Comes back on any time you have a power outage. Greenstar (Genesis company) blame the power company rather than acknowledge a product fault. It came on by itself while I was on holiday overseas for 8 weeks, came home to find the heater running, not impressed. Have to unplug when not on.

5) Forget warranty, I asked for the problems to be fixed and they told me I could pay for a service call for them to sort it out.

The pool blanket and sun seem to heat the pool better, so unless it's overcast, I generally leave the pool heater off. An expensive piece of kit for what it does.

Follow-up  · Just a follow up....nothing changed, still trying to get through another summer with this thing, just have to replace it next year as too expensive right now and can't sell the thing as no one would want something that does not work. Company have been no help, have tried to have me take down my posts by threatening to sue me, lucky they can't sue for telling the truth, so ignoring them. Don't want them on my property while they are threatening me.

Follow-up  · Another followup...nothing changed, apart from the company has stopped threatening to sue me for now, still persevering with this nightmare of a device.

Heater has now stopped working completely, shows a communication fault E27, still under warranty but the company wants $203 to come and look at it under warranty. Think its time to get rid of this useless thing.

Very good quality pool heat pump, excellent heater – Replacing Astral pool heat pump – it started playing up after a power surge event. Followed up Astral for service, extremely hard to get anyone to look at it and when someone finally did, had no clue about the fault or could offer any suggestions other than probably would be no parts anyway! It was only 6 years old and totally obsolete. My pool service repair man suggested trying the Genesis heat pump as he said they were well built and did the job well, so I checked out the specs. 13kw pump, single phase, only draws 9.6 amps and had rated Coefficient of performance (COP) of 16 – apparently that means they can produce up to 16kw of heating power for 1kw of input. I am not the technical expert but it seems that this rating is close when the ambient temperature is about 25 degrees and the water temp is not too cold.

This pump is side / rear discharge pump and connected straight into the original piping set up for the Astral. The Genesis also comes in vertical discharge models up to 26kw. A friend of mine purchase the 21kw vertical discharge model (15 amp plug in single phase) after he looked at my pump – he has a 65000-litre pool and he has had good results lifting the pool temp a few degrees in one full day. Like most, the pump uses the new R32 refrigerant.

The specifications were also higher than most pumps I compared it to for consideration: 30-year warranty on the titanium heat exchanger; 10 years warranty on the compressor (most only give 3); 3 years on all the other components; All unit’s CE certified independently.

I checked with the manufacturer about the compressor and it is a Mitsubishi unit which is a tick for me. Installation was easy in the existing plumbing, but if you were adding it to a pool pump and filter without heat pump it’s not difficult to install. I like that the control panel comes out of its weather proof receptacle and has a cord so you do not have to bend down to set up the controls. What is good is the WIFI control for which you download an app to set up, control and run the pump – the app works very well.

The only problems I encountered during the set up was following the instructions in the operating manual to connect the WIFI, which has key steps missing in the manual and are quite unclear. I wrote to the manufacturer about this and they have committed to improving the manual. However, Green Star solutions, the manufacturer have some very good tutorials on you tube on how to install the pump and how to download and set up the mobile app – the tutorials were excellent and I had no trouble following the steps and getting the pump to run on the app through WIFI. The unit uses 2.4ghz WIFI (most routers are dual band) and it’s a fair distance from the router and signal was a bit weak, so I installed a WIFI repeater nearby and problem solved – all works well.

The manufacturer / importer is local (WA) so when I had some questions it was easy to contact them. So far, the pump has been very good, it runs well and has done the job for me in adding some additional heat to the pool – when the cover is on and the pump is running it gets heated quickly and the test will be running it on the edge of the season though I expect it will do the job well.

The running noise from this pump is impressive, about 40db, you must get close to it to realize its running, so it is not intrusive at all and will not be a problem for the neighbours. No regrets about buying this heat pump, is a very good machine and I look forward to many years of good operation.

We have solar panels on the roof so power generation is not a big issue, but the unit does not seem to draw any more kw than my previous Astral unit for a much greater output in terms of kw heating power (8kw versus 13kw)

PROS: • Well-constructed from quality materials • 13kw unit has good COP rating for a 40,000-litre pool • Very quiet when it runs – around 40db • Very good warranty on unit, heat exchanger (uses Mitsubishi inverter) • Control panel is very good to use, well designed with extension cord • Mobile app works very well to control the unit easily • Easy to install – this dropped into previous Astral plumbing 100% no problem • Single phase 9.6 amp plug into 240v outlet (no 15-amp plug) CONS: • The operating manual is deficient in how to add the unit to the mobile app through WIFI, but on- line tutorials in video are excellent
