Hill's Prescription Diet GlucoSupport m/d with Liver Feline

Changed the ingredients - cat will no longer eat it – Have had my diabetic cat on this food for 12 months. In the last few months the texture of the product has changed and is now incredibly sloppy and the smell is different. Unsurprisingly the taste must have changed too, as my cat who usually loves her food began to be less enthusiastic and has since stopped eating m/d completely. Since this I have spoken to several other diabetic cat owners who have had the same experience since the product has changed, with their cats also refusing to eat the m/d.

The thing about this situation that is really unacceptable, is that this food is recommended to unwell cats. And these cats' insulin dosage (and in my case several other medications) have been tailored around the cats diet. So for that diet to change, and in the case of m/d for several users to have their cats completely stop eating the food, it can massively effect the management of the diabetes. In my case, we were close to having my cat at a stable and healthy blood glucose range. As a result of her stopping eating we've had to completely change diet and are now back to having uncontrolled diabetes which we are having to slowly work back to having under control.

I personally will be keeping clear of all Hill's Prescription Diet products from now on. Not only is it miserably inadequate to change a product that is so intrinsically linked to the management of the condition it is designed for (diabetes) but it is severely concerning that cats like mine who loved their food are actually refusing to eat this product. I feel terrible for trying to get my cat to eat it.....and I'm concerned what has been added to the food which makes it so undesirable to eat.

Only on it as we have not used any alternatives as yet – 3 months ago we found out our cat has diabetes after she is drinking and urinating a lot all of a sudden. We were told by the vet she needed 'prescription' food in conjunction with insulin. Now, this is helpful as its an easy way to control her portions so we can give her the correct dosage. On the wet food combined with the biscuits her blood glucose levels are down and she is drinking and urinating less. She has not lost much weight at all, even now we strictly stick to this diet of 1 can per day with biscuits as a garnish. She needs the biscuits for her teeth as she is around 11 now, but we find if we give her more than 10 or so pellets she drinks far too much water, and urinates more so we keep these to a minimum. This indicates to me the biscuits are not so great. Apparently they have exactly the same stuff in them? I'm not so sure.

My cat is pretty sick of the food but having no other options she eats it over the day but continuously complains for something else. Reading the ingredients I was shocked as to how processed and how many additives there was in these cans. This can not be very good. Her glucose is not fully controlled to where we want it to be as yet which may mean tweaking the insulin more or trying other products.

The price of the food is what is killing me, it's $60 for a slab of wet food plus the dry food is really killing me and there is no competition in the market as this food is 'prescription' and you cannot source it from elsewhere for cheaper. I may have to start making my recipes for her as I am unsure this is the best thing I could be doing for her health right now.

I suggest perhaps reviewing your biscuits and perhaps reviewing all the necessary preservatives you are putting in these cans, I understand there is a certain amount needed for this type of product but it seems excessive. I also wish there where more competition in terms of diabetic food/flavour options around which would make it a lot easier on pet owners. Effective source of glucose control (wet food), good potion to satisy a cat on 1 tin per day, looks quite hearty. Dry food effectiveness is concerning, heavily processed, lots of preservatives, expensive, hard to source (only availiable at the vet).
