Hills Retracting 4 Line Clothesline

I have a 6 Line version of this. 3.5 years use and all six lines are frayed where the tensioner clamps them. Does this mean I'm up for $150 in spare parts every 3.5 years? I don't think that's reasonable. I bought a 6 Line version, when a 4 Line one would be big enough, so I didn't load it up too much and it's a single person household, so not huge amounts of washing.

FWIW, Hills have provided me with a replacement. The tension mechanism seems to be different (feels different). Whether it causes as much damage to the line, or not, only time will tell.
This is an excellent product. The installation requires some fairly precise work if installing both the housing and bracket in masonry at both ends, as I did, but once installed it feels solid and generally high quality. The thing I like most about it is its clean and streamlined design. We live in an inner city town house and the clothesline stretches across a 3.5m wide rear deck. It is in full view whether deployed or not. In the retracted position it actually looks rather cool and we get questions from visitors as to what it is. Using the clothesline is easy and I especially like the way the tensioning arm re-tensions the lines each time, so if you hang clothing up and the weight of the wet clothes sags the lines a little, you can simply loosen the tensioning arm and then re-tension to get nice taut lines again. Each time we retract the lines the springs haven't weakened so that the lines simply coil up smartly up again and the square rod tucks away neatly, flush with the housing. One thing to consider is that if you have users who are tall and short the mounting height needs to be suitable for all because the line height cannot be height adjusted, obviously, unlike a freestanding hoist. Our line is a little low for me but I had to do that because my wife is shorter. The height we settled on was determined by her ability to reach and engage the tensioning arm. (I do wish Hills would rethink this aspect of the design so that the tension system was at the height of the lines and not higher as it is.) The arm seems to be on the somewhat fragile side, too, but Hills says it's made from "engineering-grade plastic" so I'm assuming it has been engineered to take some force when tensioning the lines. Aside from that though, this product has satisfied our needs and, after much research and discussion with my wife, we feel we have made exactly the right choice. It was good value, too.

Many Thanks, Hills Customer Service
Poor quality – I purchased a Hills 4 line retractable washing line. I fitted in place with dynabolts and within the first couple of month it did not retract. I returned it to my local Mitre 10 who were extremely helpful and ordered another one for me. The only reason I purchased the same again was the fact that the fuss of fitting it to dynabolts in the wall was already done. Needless to say this was a mistake and I now have only three lines all of which do not retract. Highly ‘not recommended’!
