Hotpoint MAC101

Is only good for around 30degC and small areas – We have used it for a while now. It is no good when it gets really hot!! But great at night time when the temp goes down. We have tried putting a fan aimed at the machine and it helps a little to keep it blowing cold air. On HOT days over 33-34+, it blows hot air for 10 mins then cold for 10 mins, then hot again for 10 mins, alternating. Under… Read more
31-32 it is almost constant cold, so night is perfect for it or east coast weather. The latest trick is a weird smell coming out from it now that we cannot get rid of. There are better products to buy.
Save your money – Im going to echo what the other reviewers said because this is the biggest waste of your money and time. First is super heavy and cumbersome but most of all the noise is incredible. It's a loud screeching noise that would drive anyone insane, and it doesn't cool down properly. Now I have to carry this stupid heavy item to the rubbish pick up point where it belongs. Nothing works as expected
Basically a very effective cold fan – This product has a lot of bad reviews on this page, so I want to explain the pros and cons of this air conditioner and what it can and can't do. The main problem with this air conditioner is that it is very blowy and can't regulate even a relatively small room's temperature. That isn't to say it is useless. Just the best way to cool yourself is… Read more
to have it blowing its cold air on you constantly. Some people can't stand that, but if you're like myself and actually like it you'll be fine. The point is you can't stick it in some corner of the room and hope that it will make the entire room colder, this will only be sufficient to take the "edge" off the heat. At best I'd say for a 15 square meter room my estimate is that it would be able to bring the temperature only a couple of degrees.
As far as noise, I use it in my bedroom all night and I don't have trouble sleeping with it. However, if you are sensitive you will almost certainly have trouble. It is significantly quieter than my old evaporative cooler. Initially when I purchased it, it made a large clicking noise after 15 mins (similar to what Adam_Redshaw described in a review on this site). I don't know if it was wearing in or that I changed the placement but it stopped making that noise very shortly afterwards. If that noise didn't stop I definetly wouldn't be able to sleep.
I think set-up is very important for the effectiveness of the air conditioner. I have it on my bedside table with a straight short run of the vent pipe to the window. You definetly want to have it high so that you can get it to blow over the top of you or directly down onto you depending on how cold you want to get. If you aren't setting up the vent properly I don't think there is any point. Venting to outside isn't an option.
Basically, it is what it is. Better than a fan or evaporative cooler, worser than a split system or (I imagine) more expansive one unit air conditioners.
One final note... this isn't really that portable as it is heavy (though it does have wheels) and venting isn't optional so you'll have to set up the window vent every time you move it. I plan on only moving it after summer has ended to get it out of the way but otherwise it is staying put. Inexpensive, Very cold non-humid air, Better than an evaporative cooler Can't regulate room temperature, Very blowy (low fan setting still too high for most people)
Affordable and reliable – Bought it in Good Guys not too sure why other's dont find it reliable. I have an the biggest room in all 4 bedroom house and it really helps me to have a good night sleep. Not really noisy. Really good for a hot weather it really helps you to cool down. Reliable and inexpensive, i rekon its saves energy too unlike those expensive aircon.
Terrible – Save your money and buy something else. A fan does as good job as this thing at a lower price. Compact design Doesn't cool the room. Blows cold air out but overall room temp doesn't sink at all. Even in a small 9m2 bedroom running the unit for 6 hours hardly makes any difference in room temp. It's also quite noisy - too noisy to sleep to even with the sleep function activated.
Terrible – Totally useless item.Don't purchase it.Its not effective as other portable air conditioner working without noise. To hard too sleep when its running on. its totally wastage the money. You can't sleep when its working.Too noisy.I suggest don't purchase it. its totally wastage the money. You can't sleep when its working.Too noisy.I suggest don't purchase it.
Mine broke down all the time and Hotpoint refused to repair it, even though it's under warranty. This product is a joke.
Dont BUY! – In the shop one was running and it was cold and quiet.....just what i was looking for aswell as great price. Got mine home let it sit for hrs cause i had it on its side while taking it home, turned it on, and after about 15 minutes the noise that came from it was unbearable. I thought the unit was gonna blow up, so i didn't even attempt to leave… Read more
it on to wait to see if the noise went. Took it back cause i recorded the noise on my phone and he said that it sounds like the compressor had gone. Got another one, a replacement, same thing. Rang the guys back he said they are just noisy and if i want quieter i need to upgrade and pay more which is what im gonna do. Just a shame cause i was happy for the first 15 minutes of having it. Size and price Noise was unbearable, sounds like it was gonna blow up and a weird smell came from the machine.
I had a very loud clicking noise on mine but it wasn't the compressor because it was happening on… Read more
Terrible – Overall this machine is useless in summer. I spent $350 on this. It cannot even cool a 15sqm room. I should have bought a resal air-conditioner. The cooling function is almost zero as the machine gets too hot at the same time and all the heat let out along the vent pipe kills the close-to-none cooling air. I set the temp for 18 degrees but after two hours the room was still as hot
This machine is totally waste of money!!!!
