I am using my HP7740 for the first time. It prints A4 in colour quite happily from a pdf but will not print on A3 in colour - only B&W. I've swapped the paper between the trays with the same result. All my printer settings are for colour. Is it not designed to print A3 in colour or am I doing something wrong?

HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 series, when printing on glossy paper which side of the paper do you place — face up or down. Any help?

Gloss down, as it flips over. The printer struggles with too thick paper, eg Kodak, premium gloss, 240 gms in A4 would not get through in my printer. 275 gms in 6x4 works excellent. I ended up buying a special photo printer for photos (I generally print larger than 6x4) and use the 7740 for everything else - but I am a hobbyist photographer.

How to print with black only when color is depleted?

I am having problems with the hp 7740 printhead. It is leaking some of the ink, mostly magenta. Should I clean it? What I could use to clean it? If I need another printhead, what is my best option?

I just bought a HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. I have set up the tray on the printer (A4 for Tray 1 and A3 for Tray 2) but my PC won't allow me recognise Tray 2. I have Windows 10 Enterprise installed on my Dell Notebook (it is a work PC). Tutorials on you Tube seem to be using an older form of Windows I can't access the same printer properties as are shown, which allows the second tray to be identified. Can you help please? The only reason I bought this printer was for its A3 capability.

Hello Greg, Sorry for the late response. I found one way to print, but it is a little clunky. Go to Document Properties, Advanced => Paper/Output and change to A3. OR At bottom of Print dialogue, select Page Setup In that dialogue box you have Size and Source..

I had an issue with A3 paper always sitting in my bottom tray. I made a cover out of cardboard to stop the dust. It is annoying. Apparently it is part of their cost savings.

Hi Catherine Compared to the response I get from HP here in Australia (zero) your help is appreciated. A3 doesn't show up for either option that you indicated, only A4 and Letter. Its as if it can't detect the second tray. I can print A3 engineering drawings (the main reason I bought the printer) but I can't tell an A4 page to print as A3. Sometimes in a Word document I want to set a page break and rotate a page to landscape, as well as set a larger paper size for large tables, but apparently the printer software can't deal with this. I have just set it to autodetect which will select the paper by itself. Pretty lousy effort by HP I must say, as well as the cost cutting on the dust cover. I'll be buying from a competitor next time I think.

Thanks again!

Greg

This printer may be of good price but ink consuming. It doesn't allow you to print black page if any of the coloured cartridges is depleted. Even if you only print black pages, it still use your coloured inks. Even if you do not print (using only the scan function), it still consumes your coloured inks. I think all of these is because coloured cartridges are expensive.

This printer won't print on my HP PC. Windows can see it as the default printer but when you print to it, the document appears in the print queue (spooling, printing) but nothing prints! I have tried via a USB cable and via wi-fi & networking. The HP Smart program can't find it but Windows can!

Have you downloaded and installed HP Print and Scan Doctor. It is my goto app when troubleshooting printer issues.

Yes. Print & Scan can't find the printer even though Windows shows it as installed. First tried wi-fi then USB but neither worked.

BTW, I've had HP take remote control of my PC a number of times and they used Print & Scan Doctor. It made no difference, the printer wouldn't print.

I intended to return the printer to OfficeWorks and change it for another printer since it was still less than 30 days from the purchase date. However, a higher level support person from HP contacted me but he was still stuck with a Windows installer error 2753 which needed to be fixed by Microsoft. I rang Microsoft via help.microsoft.com and had a call from a level 1 Microsoft technician. After another hour on the phone & a re-installation of Windows, he couldn’t fix it. Eventually, on the day I intended to return the printer, a higher level Microsoft technician contacted me, by passed the HP websites and suggestions, and loaded the driver manually. The printer worked and has been working since. If you want a 2 input tray (1 for good paper, 1 for recycled paper) printer with dual sided ADF and dual sided printing with the capability to print, copy and scan A3 AND you are prepared to potentially spend time with HP and Microsoft, then you should definitely consider this printer. And so endeth the saga of getting the 7740 to work!

When trying to print A3 I don't see choice only A4 or letter, or smaller

In the printer properties on the Device Settings tab select the tray (Main or Tray2) containing the A3 paper and click Apply. You may have to close and then reopen the application you're trying to print from for it to recognise the change. If you're using Word, Excel or similar application, select A3 as your document size BEFORE trying to print.

I doubt it. According to the spec sheet for this model printer the max weight is 180gsm.

I need to print a 180 GSM paper cover for reports to clients???

How do I do this successfully with THIS printer?? Some people tell me this is not possible while laughing!!???

PLEASE don't tell me HP have let me down again???

Rene

According to HP's paper handling specifications for this printer, the maximum thickness is 180gsm. At a guess I would place the paper in one of the paper trays as per normal. I suggest going into printer properties, select Printer Preferences and select the appropriate paper type from the list for the particular print job. Hopefully that helps.

Our printer will not recognise 2 ( Y and BK) after market cartridges but happily uses after market cartridges in C and M. Any ideas? I have tried another cartridge in each.

Rene

It is my understanding that the 7740 uses chip technology that may prevent the use of other than genuine HP ink cartridges. I read some documentation (from HP) that the authentication is that tight that even re-using previously installed HP cartridges may present a problem.

Can you print just with black ink when a color needs replacing?

Rene
Rene

From an HP manual (Officejet 86xx family): Printing with black or color ink only For regular usage, this product is not designed to print using only the black cartridge when the color cartridges are out of ink.

However, your printer is designed to let you print as long as possible when your cartridges start to run out of ink.

When there is sufficient ink in the printhead, the printer will offer you the use of black ink only when one or more of the color cartridges are out of ink, and the use of color ink only when the black cartridge is out of ink.

The amount that you can print using black or color ink only is limited, so have replacement ink cartridges available when you are printing with black or color ink only.

When there is no longer sufficient ink to print you will get a message that one or more cartridges are depleted, and you will need to replace the depleted cartridges before you resume printing.

CAUTION: While ink cartridges are not damaged when left outside of the printer, the printhead does need to have all cartridges installed at all times after the printer is set up and in use. Leaving one or more cartridge slots empty for an extended period may lead to print quality problems and possibly damage the printhead.

Does this printer scan A3 pages?

MICHAEL

Unfortunately NO

Ros
Ros

Bummer! Thank you.

Rene
Rene

Yes it does single sided, from the flatbed only, using the Windows Fax and Scan app. The ADF is for A4 only. Unfortunately the HP app only recognises A4, which is why I use the one that ships with Windows (under Windows Accessories on the menu bar).
