LG G4 Series

This is LG's top of the range TV, costing me over $7000 in late 2024. With a huge 83inch screen and the latest in LED technology, the picture is outstanding. However the sound is miserably tinny and so you really must connect up either a soundbar or home theatre. My TV has worked well but with one qualification: it doesn't play well across an HDMI… Read more
ARC connection with my Denon home theatre amplifier. LG support was of limited help only, assisting me to identify what the trigger for the problem is but offered no solution. Instead, I had to work around the problem, which eventually worked. Overall, it is a great TV with easy to apply settings and outstanding picture quality. If you target a slightly smaller screen size (65in), price drops significantly, but the 83in size certainly makes for a true home cinema.
This TV is unbelievably awesome. I have never seen a better picture quality on a TV before. I have always tended to buy the lower end of the TV ranges on offer, but I wanted to treat myself for a change with a larger, higher quality TV. I initially went into the store to buy the C series model, but when I saw the G series it blew my mind, and… Read more
I had to have it. So, it was a bit of an impulse buy in that respect. But I don’t regret it one bit.
These are my first impressions after a few months of use: 1. Unbelievable picture quality. The blacks are inky black, and the colours are vibrant and outstandingly bright. Watching HDR content demonstrates this really well. Even in well lit rooms the picture quality is fantastic with little reflection. 2. The TV sound is quite good on its own, but I paired this with the LG SG10TY soundbar which was offered as a bundle deal. Combined the sound quality is fantastic, particularly when cranked up for movies. There are AI settings which I have yet to explore which allow adjusting the sound to your room. 3. Responsiveness. The TV’s new Alpha 11 processer, which doesn’t really mean anything to me, obviously does a great job as everything seems so smooth and effortless with fast moving action scenes. It also supports a range of AI picture and sound features, which I am yet to explore. Some people reported buffering issues. I’ve experienced zero issues like that. 4. The G stands for Gallery in that it is designed to be flush mounted on a wall like a gallery painting. Although it does come with a stand in Australia (unlike overseas version) I recommend to anyone to use the supplied mounting bracket to mount it on the wall. It looks so clean and neat. There is hardly any bezel which adds to the look. Plus it is incredibly thin at just over 2.5 cm. 5. I don’t know why everyone is down on the remote. I find it quite good and easy to use. Love the screen pointer. It’s a huge step up from the remote on my previous TV with a myriad of buttons.
I’ll return to this review with an update after a few more months of experimentation and usage. But so far, I love it. Watching sport and movies is a joy. Would I buy it again? Yes, most definitely.
Great TV with a **** remote controller – The TV itself is 11 out of 10. The remote is 0 out of ten. Even my budget Hisense TV remote is 100 % LG wake up and Fix this cheap horrible remote controller.
SMART TV?? NO STUPID TV – Smart TV?? Stupid TV more like it. On nearly all the apps (Stan, Kayo etc) continuous buffering and that's with with 80mbps internet speeds. Makes sport and movies unwatchable, will never buy an LG TV again Show details
Great TV with bad remote controller functions – I Bought the G4 this month (June 2024) to upgrade from my LG C9 which I bought when it came out and I was very happy with it. After reading other positive online reviews I decided to get the G4. It is a noticeable upgrade for me and the G4 has Great picture quality and decent sound on its built in tv speakers. I am very happy with the quality… Read more
and the overall built in features. I am still learning some of the extra features that were not on my old C9. I would recommend buying the G4 for its picture and sound quality for movies and live tv. I haven't tried it for gaming, but I know the specs are better than the C9 and I was happy with the C9 for gaming. If the remote and some of the settings were better or consistent with previous LG models, I would have given it 5 stars.
I paired the new G4 easily with a 990D sound bar, after watching and reading several reviews for different brands of sound bars in my price bracket. I will never go back to just tv speakers.
My only disappointment, which I have several, is with the G4 remote controller and the built in settings regarding live tv.
There is no pause or play button on the remote. Instead you have to press the scroll wheel and then point the magic cursor to the pause or play icon on the screen. The cursor sometimes wanders and makes it an annoying waving exercise to try and get the cursor onto the icon. It is worse when you are fast forwarding or rewinding live tv, I end up overshooting where I wanted to rewind or fast forward to because the cursor is floating all over the screen. Its very frustrating. On the old C9 remote I had both options - magic cursor or use the buttons on the remote and they both worked excellently.
It is also annoying trying to get the pause and play bar to display on the tv in the first place. I press the scroll wheel and it is a 50/50 whether the pause/play/fast forward/rewind bar displays, or the 'On now, On next" icons display instead. If that happens I have to press the button with the 3 dots (...) to get the menu that allows me to select the 'More Actions" menu where I can select the 'live playback' option. Its absolutely stupid and frustrating. On the C9 it was one or two presses.
When you change channels, the live tv temporarily stored on the hdd is wiped and starts again on the channel you have switched to. This is extremely annoying and disappointing for me, especially when you have over an hour of live tv stored and you accidently move the scroll wheel (which is easy to do) causing the channel to change, losing all the temporarily recorded footage. This did not happen on the C9 and it was a function I thought would be on the G4. I don't understand why they would change this, its truly depressing for me. I can actually use the C9 remote to pause or play on the G4 which is what I am doing now, because I am so frustrated with the G4 remote. I have to use a backward solution for a flagship tv - so ridiculous. The disappointments continue regarding captions on or off. You have to go through about nine settings before you can turn captions on or off. I could do it in 2 steps on the C9. Sadly the C9 remote will not perform the same caption function on the G4.
To make it a truly smart tv, after fixing the above problems, it would have been nice if you could change the cursor colour on the magic remote in the settings and also change the size and location of the live tv picture in picture when you are accessing something else in the menu or settings while watching live tv. Lastly it would be really nice if the flagship tv remote was backlit.
I don't know if my issues would be something that others would worry about, or consider to be a deal breaker, but for me it took the shine off the upgrade from the LG C9 which I loved and still love. only wish it had the picture quality of the G4. I am hoping that maybe the captions and the storing of live tv playback not wiping when the channel is changed can be fixed with an operating system update. Those two things would make the G4 a 5star choice for me. If they can't be fixed or changed then my next upgrade will be to a tv that has those functionalities and it probably will not be an LG TV.
