We have a 2006 Mazda B4000 Bravo automatic 4x2 dual cab style side ute. Took it to a mechanic as on start up car was over revving & then would settle and drive normally with no issues, no overheating, but upon stopping we could smell a burning smell, like the engine was cooking, but there were no overheating issues with radiator, or coolant, no leaking water, no milky oil, no oil pools under car that we could see, not using oil & no gauges indicating any issues. Mechanic found an oil leak from tappet gaskets & upon commencing repairs (car service, tappett gaskets, new plugs) mechanic stated there were large blobs of caked up oil clumps and that it was from neglect & lack of services & this has damaged the engine and that he doubted our car could be repaired & that there was high chance the motor could blow when they put it back together again and advised us that we would have to either replace engine or cut our losses & buy another car, their advice was to cut our losses (mechanic doesn't do engines). So they put new plugs in & replaced the tappet gaskets, put it back together & now it is only running on 3 cylinders (left bank) & the timing chain is out by a tooth or has lost a tooth. Finding hard to understand why even though we had this smell our car was driving perfectly fine, it wasn't missing or overheating & now it's not drivable, running on 3 cylinders, so was the problem neglect like mechanic said, or has mechanic made a mistake while fixing it & now we have to either find an engine and another mechanic to fix it or buy another used car . With prices of current used car market, should we spend the money fixing it or cut our losses & buy another car.
I owned one of these V6 B4000 for quite a few years, bought it second hand. The engine is quite complex. One head has timing chain at the front, other head has timing chain at the back. Sounds like you need at the very least both timing chains & tensioners replaced. That is you wouldn't just replace the timing chain & tensioner on the dead cylinder head & leave the other one, cause it's probably due to go soon too. I think the engine would need to come out to do the rear one. Cost of parts & labour for that would cost more than the car's worth. I sold my 06, B4000 for $4000 & it was running quite well, no rust. (Burning smell was probably oil leaking onto exhaust manifold).
Kev Koala - update, our son has had a look at our car & found the mechanic did not put the motor cover back on, have to return to mechanic to collect it & son has found the mechanic had put the leads 3,5 & 6 on the wrong spark plugs, eg lead 6 was put on spark plug 5. Since putting the leads on the right spark plugs, car is now running.
How can a person be called a mechanic when they can't even find the firing order and put the plug leads on correctly? Most back yarders could do that. I spent the first 20 years of my working life as an engine reconditioner and i can say there are a lot of dodgy mechanics out there.
