Miele H 5461 BP

Disappointed – After a long period of research and waiting, I decided on the Miele 5461BP. It was touted as having an anti splash tray insert and a catalyzer; however, I cooked a chicken in it for Christmas (first time I had used the oven since being installed) and it spattered fat everywhere and smelled like hell. I've never seen so much fat in an oven in my considerable years alive. It was on the back wall, sides, in the tray, and even on the oven floor.
As soon as the oven cooled, I tried to wipe it out, but the fat on the back wall and oven floor was baked on. After a huge attempt to clean it carefully, according to instructions -hot cloth, mild detergent and a lot of elbow grease; hot clean cloth to clear the residue - no luck. I actually had no choice but to run a Pyro clean... One use only and that was the result. In case you Miele converts are wondering, yes I did have it properly installed and the fellow set up everything and left the oven running, telling me not to turn it off for at least an hour. I had also run the moisture plus function according to instructions for first use.
Another thing I was horrified by was the enormous smell the oven exuded and the smoke that built up inside the oven made it impossible to see the chicken. I had to open the oven to see if everything was okay. This is now boxing day evening, and I still can't get rid of the smell of burnt fat from the house.
I've cooked literally hundreds of chickens in several different ovens in my years and I've never experienced anything like this. I thought the catalyzer was supposed to reduce the smell of cooking. It was the exact opposite. I'm afraid to try it again because it was such a traumatic experience.
Finally, the pyro program left a burn mark around the inside of the door where it seals. Don't know if that's normal cos I've never used Pyro before. I'm also worried, now, about using the so called perfect clean baking tray in case that gets destroyed. It was really hard to clean the universal tray. The chicken was well cooked. Looks good in the kitchen. Expensive and does not live up to the promise of low spatter and reduced cooking odor.
Excellent – After researching for months I settled on this oven for our new domestic kitchen. So far am very impressed. Like the semi auto control knobs. Read manuels to get the best out of your first experiments. Haven't needed to use the Pyrolytic clean function yet however a quick wipe out has been all that is necessary. Attend the Miele cooking demonstrations if you can, really helps to demistify the more advanced functions of this oven. Feel at this price you are getting a superior product however would like to see Miele include at least one set of Flexi Clips as a standard accessary. H5461BP - Really fast heat up, Auto feature is really easy to use, roast dinner was fantastic using auto roast. Easy to keep clean. Interior space very adequate, just as big inside as my older much larger oven. Looks smart in a bank of appliances. Nothing so far, however suggest purchasing 2 sets of the optional flexi clip runners. They really make it easy to pull the trays out safely & glide beautifully. I was lucky enough to get one set as an added extra with a microwave. Also I got the deep optional gourmet dish as an added extra & it is fantastic to roast in,cleaning it up is so easy as it has a non stick surface & it cooked the food to perfection.
2012 _ The Pyrolytic function is amazing - so easy to keep oven clean. My only other comment at this stage is that the oven always seems quite "Moist" when being used. Hard to get roast vegetables crisp & crunchy like my old fan blast wall oven did.
Thank you for reply Will give this a try
2014 - Ready to pull out this oven & replace with another brand. Problems are that 1) I have to keep referring to the instruction book constantly as the oven cooks so differently to every other (10) oven I have owned. 2) It is so annoying to always have to program the moisture reduction but if I don't the oven just acts as a high steam oven. 3) When opening the oven door during use you must stand well to the side or be blasted by the intense steam & heat forced out by the fan that cannot be turned off. 4) The Optional flexi clip runners stopped running smoothly after 3 years. I have always cleaned them only on the surface so purchased the special lube $55 from Miele for the Tinniest tube but it made no difference & the few times they were gently twisted off the oven racks for cleaning appears to have twisted them ever so slightly so they now do not work at all & have been removed for good. I used to be a constant baker of biscuits, cakes & pavlova / meringues but now cook these in a Panasonic convection microwave as I got so sick of wasting ingredients & time & producing disasters out of this oven. It is great for casserole type dishes in the big covered cooking pans but try crisping pork belly etc is a waste of time.
Bonuses: 1) Pyrolytic function really does help in cleaning oven, still have to nylon scour over roof & lights / glass but eliminates oven spray so is better for health. 2) Oven door comes apart for cleaning easily. Best product for cleaning Miele cook ware is a Nylon type Euroscrubbies available fro Howards Storage World. 3) Fits quite a bit in but in reality have never been able to cook 2 courses at the same time in it.

Follow up: They came to fix the problems, but it didn't resolve the issues entirely. I haven't bothered to go back to them again because of the problem of having to take a day off to wait for the repairers to arrive. I have already lost two days at work. They scratched the bottom of the oven and made a dint in the silver strip at the bottom of the door, but I didn't realize till after they had gone. The oven doesn't bake evenly and I have to avoid using auto programs if I want to get the right temp. I use a thermometer. They told me that it was the best they could do and that it would reach temp in about a further five minutes from when the bell goes to signal it's ready. I went to Miele cooking classes and that has helped to reduce the issue of fat going everywhere when cooking roasts, but not entirely. It is still hard to clean unless I use the Pyro function. The smell of the Pyro has subsided somewhat. Overall, I can say that I'm unhappy with the Miele. I have recommended a different oven brand to friends, family and colleagues as a result of the poor service backup. I think Miele should have offered to replace the oven, even with a demo or something that was shown to be clean and fully operational, instead of telling me after two visits that I just had to wait longer for temps to be reached, effectively making the auto programs useless, and not resolving the other issues either - like the knob sticking and the display sometimes no't switching off until I go into settings and check. I never change it but it has a mind of its own.
