Navman My Escape

GPS Nightmare, MyEscape is Dangerous and unreliable. (One Star should mean worse than just Terrible) – MYESCAPE does not know where it is, the poor thing. It escapes its tasks by taking me everywhere except where I am going. It shows that I am driving along roads that are about 200 to 300 metres to the left or the right of wherever I am. It sometimes shows that I am cruising along water canals, Scary man! One time I almost ended up driving into the… Read more
sea, down a boat ramp. When I was supposed to be on a bridge about 200 meters to the left. The thing has no idea where it is. I Tried updating the firmware. "No luck" Same problem. I am now using my iPhone. Works great! No more Navman for me. New Zealand's consumer laws state! (If it does not do what the manufacturer says it can do then you are entitled to a refund). Unfortunately I am currently in Australia and there is no such protection for the consumers. Too bad I suppose. What a waste of money.
Initially OK but now freezes after Software updates – My expensive Navman Escape II worked fine for a few years even after updating software and maps a few times but now freezes when navigating after updating to the latest SW and maps. Navman support suggested going back to a prior release. This is bit better but still freezes after about 5 to 10 minutes EVERY time we navigate. I am getting tiered of trying endless permutations of old versions of software and maps. Would not recommend Navman.
Not a good navigator – Start up and general loading of maps is very slow to load on Navman. Accuracy on off road dirt tracks/roads not good. Travelling on roads such as Oodnadatta Track and Tanami Road unit was lost most of the time. The windscreen charging unit has failed and won't charge Navman Unit.
Intermittently freezes, slow to start, poor rear view visibility – From brand new the display froze. Did the software update and the freezing reduced, but was still an issue. Navman suggested I return it for repair, instead I returned it to the retailer for a credit. Startup and loading of maps is very slow. It then asks a bunch of questions before it's ready to display maps or the reversing camera. So if your… Read more
first action after starting the truck is to reverse you then get to wait until the Navman is well and ready. Very frustrating. Matched to the smaller Navman camera the visibility is very poor, even in full sunlight.
After 20 months it's had it! – Was a great unit to start with. After 20 months the gps wouldn't charge in the car cradle. Still under warranty, I rang Navman to claim a new cradle, they sent the wrong cradle, then sent the same cradle that they hacked and modified and still does not fit GPS! Here is a tip!!!!!!!!! Don't bother with warranty, take it straight back to where you purchased it from and get a refund under "not working as intended for" I did!
A very useful device – I have used this device over the past year on a day to day basis and on several trips down the south west of WA now and it has operated extemely well. I have found it to be very accurate and it is able to pick up all the offroad tracks. It is easy to use and the road speed indicator and speeding beep is an excellent feature that has saved me money… Read more
in speeding fines. These are great units and represent excellent value for money being well priced. I certainly would recommend these to any 4x4 offroad enthusiast.
Very dissapointing – I purchased this unit to replace my smaller Garmin, the main reason being to use when towing our caravan. Well, on last trip it only lasted 50km before I stopped and hooked up my smaller/cheaper Garmin. Firstly it takes for every to start up, then it freezes for a while and SOMETIMES it decides to start working. It doesn't show POI's (i.e. fuel,… Read more
food and rest stops) UNLESS you press EXPLORE, you then have touch the symbol and it gives you options of what is in the area. But while it does this it stops showing you where you are traveling on the map. If you then drive on for a while it continues to show POI's from back where you originaly pressed EXPLORE! So therefore you have to continually keep pressing EXPLORE as you are driving along to see where even the next fuel stop is. My cheeper/smaller Garmin does give me this info as you drive along. The other floor in this unit is, if you do want to know where the next fuel stop is, you select fuel in the POI's and it tell you where the fuel stations are around you, problem is it doesn't show in which direction they are in. One could be 2 km from you but you don't know if it is still to come, or if you have already passed it. My Garmin give arror directions and distances. Garmin also shows altitude as you drive, which is handy when towing large caravan, no such option on the Navman My Escape 11. This unti requires way too many manual touches of the screen to be of any benifit to the traveller. Reget buying it, should have upgraded to another Garmin or to a Hema HN6. At leave they justify the price tag. Nothing. Lots, given it marketed to the person towing or travelling.
Navman Myescape - unreliable – Purchased to use in large motorhome to use the height and weight features for route determination. Worst GPS I have ever owned. In the country, often tries to send you via road reserves (sometimes fenced off paddocks) which means you need to backtrack. Have resorted to Google maps on Iphone to get me to destination, No map updates, No Mac… Read more
compatibility.
Problems with charging in the cradle. You must use their charger, not a standard USB cable even though connectors are the same.
Have been sent into dead end streets and roads. Pain with a 12 tonne truck.
Very confusing voice commands. On the Bruce Highway near my house it tells me to keep right whilst the map shows to exit left?
Purchased product as it had offroad Hema maps loaded.
Wasted $350. Large screen, intersection navigation. Inaccurate, unreliable, overpriced. No Mac compatibility.
Terrible... Just Terrible – Does not work well slow bad maps, any other cheap GPS out there is better than this unit. How can Navman produce such a slow device with so many problems, My Navman GPS needs me to restart it every ten minutes in Sydney and when driving in the bush I see 100's of named roads that don't ever appear on the Navman maps. I only wasted $400 dollars on… Read more
this thing. I will never get back the hours and hours of wasted time and fuel following bad directions from half finished maps.
I love my Navman My Escape - it works – Have had mine for at least a year, it's easy to download the new maps when the Navman screen advises me they are available, I've phoned the help line when I first bought it to check how to download maps and was talked through the procedure by the assistant while I set it up, never had to contact them again :) I find it an excellent product and… Read more · 7
have had none of the hassles stated by some on here :)
I use my Navman in the City and in the bush too, as I drive a 4WD.
The other important benefit I find almost essential is the path you take in the bush or the beach remains on the screen, so you can retrace your way back out - when you get to the end of a track or 'lost' :(
I would definitely buy another Navman GPS :)
Navman My Escape II – I brought this unit because it advertised off road 4wd maps. As we going to cape york this year (2013), and it was discounted price as well.($315.00 at JB hi fi). Generally the unit worked ok and was fairly accurate, although maps are a bit out date, probably by at least 2 years. As other reviews have stated ,I found that the main problems were on… Read more
going screen freeze-up had to keep turning off then on after a few minutes, very annoying. Speed camera warning about 100 metres too late ,(not till your on top of them). and battery life too short , although I suppose the thats the trade off for keeping small as possible.
The windscreen holder was excellent it stayed in place all the time (over about 6million or more road corrugations ) and had plenty of adjustment for positioning. My Daughter brought the same type and had same probs with freezing up.
The 4wd map list was fairly comprehensive , but didn't really use it much on trip so that needs further exploration. one of the other vehicles had a Hema 6 navigator which was more detailed in most respects, I would probably go that way next time , although it cost more. as above as above
Don't buy it – Bought because of the camera connectivity. Bought the genuine camera also. Connected them together. Didn't work. Contacted manufacturer and was sent a replacement cable (their suggestion, not mine). Was the wrong cable. This was repeated 3 times. Finally got the right cable, didn't fix problem. Note - camera works fine when connected to… Read more
another device. Sent unit back to manufacturer. Was checked out and they found 'nothing wrong'. Since then, camera works occasionally - 1 time in 20. Device also regularly positions me incorrectly by up to 1/2 km for entire trip of 1/2 hour or more. Will tell me I'm approaching a railway line as I'm actually driving away from it etc. Screen has locked on a number of occasions.
Rubbish product with rubbish support. The box it came in. Doesn't work properly and poor support
Navman escape – I bought a navman escape last year 29/9/2012 from dick smiths holly wood plaza and have had nothing but trouble with it first of all the mount stopped working so they replaced it. Then the charger stopped working so they replaced that. Then the blue tooth stopped working this they give me the run around and it still doesn't work then the mount… Read more
that joins the unit to the window mount stopped working again so they sent me another on over a month later but guess what this one was broken too I tryed to take it back to dick smiths hollywood plaza but they didn't want anything to do with it I was told to deal directly with navman. But now navman just ignore my emails when I ring up they say they will send a new part, When I don't know ? So in general I have found that my unit is a faulty peace of rubbish and the after sale service doesn't exist. so I will not recommend navman to anyone
Faulty unit pluss bad warrenty service when they have sent part they have sent ether the wrong one or broken parts

Know better, choose better.
Don't buy Navman my escape – The unit does not tell you of the red light /speeding cameras until you are through them, that is, if they tell you at all. The south bound camera at North Narrabeen never rates a mention. I could not be bothered with the 'not very easy' way of sending in for repairs even though the unit was purchased 4 months ago. I have been trying to get the… Read more
unit right since purchased. They did replace a faulty windscreen unit promptly. Maps out by up to 100 metres. Warnings, if any, inconsistant. Cost.
A great GPS – I used it in Tasmania and I found it to very helpful in the high country and all the logging truck tracks are there. To find out where the Spirit of Tasmania is located in Melbourne port all you need to do is search using the smart finder and it even shows the car boarding road right up to the check in building. Same goes when you are in Tasmania.… Read more
All the car rest areas are shown across the Nullubor. User friendly and I love the smart find section. The first time I downloaded new maps I found difficult but the November 2012 new maps worked OK
Map updates cause problems – This device is Navman's third attempt to provide me with a product that works. As with the MY 75T and MY 85XLT when map updates arrive by email the device is automatically updated when connected to Navdesk. Three times I have had some maps erased irretrievably. The latest is the loss of Safety cameras. When turned on an error message appears -… Read more
"some maps failed to load correctly". My phone records show that I have called Navman support 9 times to get help - absolutely useless and rude.
As far as mapping is concerned - forget it. It took me through Sydney and Melbourne travelling along busy traffic congested roads, took hours. On the return journey I turned the device off and was through in no time. As for the 4WD maps, they had me lost in Ottway National Park for two hours - one simple instruction to turn right would have saved me a lot of hassle.
The support department is so bad that, for mental health reasons, I can no longer ring them - hence still no Safety cameras.
Mapping errors, terrible support, unreliable updates - they even changed the access word for 4WD maps but didn't notify users.
Very Ordinary Effort by Navman – The MYEscape is quite dear comparative to other units, the screen is very unresponsive and slow. Typing is painful with the unit taking forever to receive input. Road alerts (traffic signs etc) are not accurate with all overtaking lanes in Tasmania being incorrect. For example if an overtaking lane notification sign appears on the road stating… Read more
300m ahead, the Navman tells you it is beginning.
The HEMA maps are a joke in Tassie, there basically aren't any !
The vocal commands are simply aweful with terrible pronunciation. Places appear to be being said either phonetically or by a foreigner and often do not at all resemble where you wish to go.
The voice input is even worse as you need to say the destinations phonetically. The voice input is utterly useless because of this and you also need to basically shout for it to hear you.
I replaced A Kogan KG5 with this unit as my Kogan was stolen. The Kogan was three years old and was vastly superior to this unit in every way. The screen was better looking and more responsive and the unit responded instantly, not after it had nipped off for a coffee before excepting the next letter from the onscreen keyboard.
In short their is nothing good to recommend about the MyEscape. It is [censored word removed]. The only good thing about it are the freen map updates which everyone else offers as standard these days anyway.
Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere for a GPS and if you're a 4 w/driver...... forget it. It's a joke ! Map Updates Pretty well everything
