Broken remote – I have had the same problem but until now, had just left the device in the cupboard and replaced it with another brand. I have just today tried to attach a 'One for all' universal controller but I cannot access the correct code and that is not working either. Any advice would be appreciated.  Show details

Subtitles – Unable to access Subtitles on any of my movies on my external hard drive through my Philips HMP4000 Media Player during play. It comes up as "No subtitle", so does't even give me the option to "Select a subtitle language". I've referred to "Q&A" and "Reviews", including in my User Manual, but no success. Please help. Also tried sending this query as a "Ask a Question" but it froze. Hope this works better in "Write a Review".

MKV Files Not Playing – I've been using my media player for some time now without any hassles. I recently got some MKV files and tried to play them but they won't work even though it says that they will. I updated the software some time back and I noticed that the last software update was back in 2013. Anyone else had this issue?  Show reply

AVI does not work – I tried to make the AVI files that I have work by changing the HDD format to Fat32 and Fat, it still doesn't work. Phillips should have an update for this device firmware to resolve this issue. I have to return the damn thing to Dick Smith electronics, A BIG waste of time!

Phillips Media Centre HMP 5000 – We purchased one of these from Dick Smith, just out of warranty the remote died. I contacted Phillips by email to get a new remote as we were very happy with the unit. Well, I got an email back, a new remote $40 pretty stiff for a $98 unit, even worse $20 postage. So all up a remote control $60. We went to Dick Smith and bought another $98 unit,… Read more

same thing happened with the remote.

Such a pity Phillips, an excellent functional media centre with bad/poor quality remote controls.

We now have a Western Digital, the only good thing there is the remote control works very well, the unit is temperamental, and we don't like it.

Brilliant Low Cost Media Player – I have 2 of these and have had no problems whatsoever with them. They play all the formats that I throw at them including AVI, and the picture and sound quality is superior to anything that I have seen on other media players. It also powers, and plays from either my 2gb Passport Ultra HDD or my 1gb Seagate expansion.  Show reply

Poor avi support – Purchased from my local dick smith as a media player for the kids room. I have encoded a lot of the DVD's I have purchased over the years to prevent the original from getting damaged. AVI's I encoded using dr divx and the retail version of the Divx encoder I bought around 2008 will not play on this device. I'm a little bit peaved as this means a… Read more

couple of hundred movies will not play. More recently encoded AVI's seem to play fine. After two days fiddling I have put it back in the box, put it in the cupboard and bought a western digital product. Poor codec support or operating system licensing issues? Sorry Philips, I was willing to give your product a go, but it just wasn't up to par with comparable media players. A shame. Inexpensive. Easy navigation of menus Wouldn't play most AVI movies

Avi format problems – While reading the box in store and checking the supported formats which clearly states supports AVI formats. I get home and attempt to play AVI formatted movies however it doesn't work. Plays all other formats but not AVI. If it doesn't support the format it shouldn't state that it does. Not a bad little media player just a shame it doesn't do what it states on the box
