Youtube no longer supported – This product is no longer supported by youtube essentially making it a glorified flash drive as there were not many useful built in applications to begin with, sure it can still connect to a network and access medial content but even older model tv's have usb inputs where you can insert a portable drive with all your medial content in it, so really a useless product.  Show details

Useless - Will Not Work After June 30 2017 – This was my enquiry to Philips: >> Enquiry/Comment: I purchased 2x hmp500 units for my home and After June 30 2017 they will no longer be able to access youtube. >> Are you going to release an UPDATE of the Firmware so both of these units will work as advertised. I hardly think that 2 years constitutes a FAIR Usage policy.

PHILIPS REPLY

Thank you for taking your time to contact Gibson Innovations. We understand that you would like to know if we have a software/firmware which will be released for this model.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused. There would be no firmware upgrade for this model as this product has been discontinued already. Philips doesn't manufacture this product anymore.

NOTE: Philips STILL advertise these on their Website:

Constant failure – In the past four years i have brought or had replaced approximately 9 Philips HD Media Player HMP5000/79. They either just stopping working on the network, to rebooting over and over to just stop working altogether and power failure. I only bought my last one about 3 months ago and today i went to use it and alas no light on box so no power. I… Read more

switched power cords and used other plug holes to have nothing. i am really disappointed in this box. I brought it because it was the cheapest of the portable media players and played just about anything. And of course Dick Smith is gone so no one to replace it to. So how does one get either a refund or a new player from. Unfortunately i do not have the docket or cant find it at the moment. After spending about $300 or so on this thing with returning it and either getting a replacement or having to buy another one i think I deserve an upgrade to a newest different one that isn't going to die every couple of months.

Very happy with philips media player – I have been using it with my tv for last three years. Very good product. But the network speed needs to be at least 23-25 mb . Otherwise it stops playing. But that is the problem with the network speed. I recommend this product provided you have very fast internet speed. Else do not buy it.  Show reply

keeps turning on and off 'no signal' – Hi there, Literally had this Media player mph5000/79 for 2 years and now it won't work. I rely on it to play university lectured through my hardrive I am so frustrated. As soon as the USB icon shows up, the media player switches off to 'no signal' and then back on again. I've had my TV for 5 years and my hard drive for 4 years and no problems whatsoever .I've tried everything from software upgrades to resetting factorie settings.

Not too bad – Been using this product now of year or so without any complaints, I went to use the Internet services it was extremely disappointed to find they will listen to to 4 sites by the developer... and worse yet Facebook doesn't even work so I went down to 3... it would be good just to be able to conduct an Internet search, considering it's online I don't see why this is not available.

Never Purchase This – This media player takes a ridiculous amount of effort to set up and connect to your network. Any glitches or issues with connecting to your network are almost impossible to solve. Does not support as many files as advertised. Internet access is very minimal. Updates seem to be non existent, showing that any glitch or issue improvement will not be in the near future.

Hopeless – Just awful. Wanted a media player to access netflix and was misinformed from Dick Smith's sales assistant that this would connect automatically. So frustrating that this is not clearly stated that it would not support internet tv - what a joke that it's right next to all of the Itv boxes and google chrome cast devices which I would have bought had this not been on special.

Internet Access – I have had this device for a while and using it support my hard drive but I was looking into Netflix and it does not support this. I thought with netflix becoming so popular I would be able to use it and nothing in the upgrade. The facebook link is longer working either, unhappy. :(

Misleading packaging. Purchased from Dick smith – Just unpacked my HMP5000. Very disappointed with internet access. The box does not state any restrictions to services but only facebook, YouTube, a weather site and Picasso. Extremely disappointed to not to have access to TV on demand sites.

Good enough for the price – I have a WD media player which is pretty good, but I wanted another for a different location, so I thought to try the Philips product. Easy to set up and plays just about every form of video file known to man! I tried setting up the Wi-Fi, but the signal strength was insufficient so I went and bought a range extender. That was a bit of a mission… Read more ·  1

to get going, but finally it worked and the media player now accesses my computer both with DLNA and via shared drives and it happily plays video files directly from there.

For playing stuff that I have stored, it is excellent. But hopeless for Internet media. What can't the makers just allow me to input an IP address? Much better than the few built-in sites the product has. So I use my Roku instead.

The keyboard entry is a pain, could be better and when I put the thing in standby using the remote, it never wakes up again. I need to turn the power off and on to get it come to life again.

Very flaky! – Had the HMP5000/79 for about 2 weeks now and I have to say the software is very flaky. It would have problems playing more H.264 encoded MKV files more often than not but no issue playing the same file on a Panasonic Smart TV, it would just stop a random spots in any particular file. Goto function to time skip just doesn't work. Called Consumer… Read more

Helpline - response was to the effect of tough luck, we know there is an issue with MKV but we won't know when this will be fixed, even though on every inch of literature and website about the product supporting MKVs. Cheap

I like it but! – I have just purchased and setting up was ok, but it is not reading/wi fi my laptop files, which is one of the major reasons I purchased. I have gone to Philips FAQ and followed instructions and still no luck. On the positive, I like the look of it and the use is quite simple. I haven't really gone through the internet options yet, but not sure… Read more

I like using the 'one letter at a time' method if I was doing facebook or youtube searches.
