Ok I built 2 houses a few years apart. Both had Rheem Stellars both had major problems over the years. The first one caught on fire. The replacement failed after a few months. Got it fixed and then it died again. The second house same stuff apart from fire. Constantly replacing valves until it split underneath. Getting a new Vulcan tomorrow. Show details
On reaching one year, and considering flushing the tank, I find that this water heater does not have a dedicated drain valve, and that emptying the tank involves undoing plumbing fittings. To my mind, this is a show stopper, and I would not have bought this had I known about the issue in advance. Show details
Follow-up · Rheem confirmed that this water heater does not have a drain valve. I've looked at another leading brand heater, and a heater from a brand I've never heard of, and the instructions indicate that they too do not have a drain valves. Indeed the wording for draining the tank by removing the union connecting the cold water supply, is remarkably consistent across these. I have views on how this has arisen, but this isn't the right forum.

Been consistently reliable. I am unsure why it keeps going out this last year. Possible interference since carjacking bullies have been trespassing or new gas meter few months ago did shut down and lockout heating with no obvious way to know.yet.It's been great previously on low setting for saving with disability. Now a tankless electric version… Read more · 1
or heat pump rebate might be available. Maybe better than cost of possible repairs while I struggle with spine and health issues. Relighting often is difficult for me though it has a great indicator for when pilot is hot enough to release knob sitting to avoid back probs so it's tricky for me to give normal perspective other than great until recent pilot issues Likely carjack thugs just doing things to upset life so gas pilot off could just be them, I'll have to see if it gets back to normal soon as it gets pretty cold showering now but it really was cheap to run says manufacturer 07/ 2017 it's lasted well and is extremely quick to heat up from cold. Has clever gauge with needle going to green when I can release pilot never seen on previous purchases. It looks modern with access panel better than many. Kinda wish it was on top when I bend and sit which wouldn't be practical given flame has to be below. Lastly, when temperature is little low it heats up roughly as fast as I use hot water Cheers.
Rheem stellar can't make it to the end of its warranty – Good hot water service until Around eight years into the life of the unit, water leaked onto the porch from underneath, Rheem were able to replace the unit as it has a 10 yr warranty. I was quite happy no leaks and good hot water restored, Until...This second unit started to leak again half way through the warranty. Plumber inspection recommended… Read more · 1
cylinder replacement, once again Rheem just replaced the unit. I was informed that I was not able to do this indefinitely, ie adfinitum replace leaking units less than ten yrs old. Although I was hoping to use one for as long as the warranty at least,. Third unit installed 2016, temperature relief valve just dumped hot water gushing out the pipework as Ive never seen before. (Oct 30 2022). Closed down the heater. Plumber testing revealed Overheating and thermostat on the blink. Replaced relief valves and flushed. I'm keeping an eye on the thermostat, just seems the Rheem stellar can't get past the 7-8 yrs of good performance from this model. Out of Three of these units. All three lasted 7-8 yrs before major probs. Otherwise good heater, no pilot troubles good when working. Pretty good warranty support from Rheem. Consistent temp until recently. Just can't get one to last 10 yrs without a major issue.
Best product on the market in its Category – Just wanted to jump in on this after reading a few people having problems. If you are having an issue with a rheem system then pursue rheem for a solution. you don't even need a receipt as rheem will be happy to go off the model number and date of manufacture on the tank. you cant get much better then that !! business and I've literally intalled 100's of Rheem tanks over the years and they are the best tanks on the market.I'm not going to drop my company name in here as i'm not here to self promote but just wanted to put it out there that rheem by far provide the best product in my view when it comes to a gas or electric Tank hot water system.
The customer service provided by rheem is also excellent. In the last 6 years i've only had 2 tanks requiring a warranty call by rheem on installation. Both times it was handled quickly and easily.
Just wanted to throw a different review into the feed coming from an installer who installs multiple rheem products on a weekly occasion.

A happy Rheem Stellar customer – My Rheem Stellar 360 is now 15 years old and is only now showing it's age, when it needs replacing, I'll choose the same system as it has not been a problem. Totally happy with it. Show details · 1
Manufactured in June 2004 and still going – 2004 model and it is still going but have decided since it is almost 20 years old to replace with a heat pump system as this may fail at any day Show details
Instant hot water that last for ages – I have had this unit for two years now and it's working well. I get instant hot water from the moment I turn on the hot water tap. I have long showers and so does my partner and it never runs out. It is a good looking hot water system compared to the others on the market so it looks more appealing to look at. Show details · 1

Extremely poor hot water system – The unit is extremely unreliable. The unit was showing issues after 1 year of installation. when we contacted, they said unit it is out of warranty and might charge call out fees of $286 and the cost for the replacement parts. Them what is this warranty for? No wonder they have discontinued the product; they… Read more
might have received that many complaints for this product. When we build a house, we didn't have has no other option to go with whatever the heater they (Content living) provide. I would never ever recommend Rheem to my friends or family. N.S

FLAME KEEPS GOING OUT LIKE OTHERS – Installed our Rheem 18 months ago but found the pilot light keeps going out randomly. It has done this since new but started to get worse after the 12 month warranty was up. Paid a plumber $400 to replace the Gas Ignition switch and guess what flame still keeps going out. Looks like Rheem has a problem with their systems as I have notice other people having the same problem. Product should be recalled and fixed. Will not buy another. Show details
Pilot light turns off by itself – Hello , we have a Rheem Stellar 330 installed in October 2020. The Pilot light keeps turning off by itself. It was doing this every second week . However, for last week it is turning off every day seems every day. It to be a common fault and there are many customers with this issue. Needs urgent help Show details

Purchased around 2001. Fitted new anodes in 2006. Fitted second set in 2011. Pilot light went out once in a huge gale. It has performed faultlessly for all this time. Really cheap to run. Slight signs of rust happening on the outside front and around the fitting for the relief valve so will replace it soon with the same unit. Looked at heat pumps but the reviews are terrible. We are not sure how old the system is, we installed it at least 20 years ago (more I think). It was manufactured in July 2000 and is still going strong! Show details · 1

Very happy with Rheem 5 Star Storage System – Replaced my old system with the Rheem 5 Star Gas storage system 135L. It is way better than the last system. Plenty of hot water with great pressure. Can now also use multiple hot water taps at the same time. Show details · 1
Expensive service – I had a Rheem Stellar 330 (130litre tank) installed when the house was built in june 2016. Now after 5 years it's stopped producing hot water. I have been charged $198 for call out fee and 15 minutes. And of course any time after that and parts and I will be charged extra. After seeing all these bad reviews on this website and how Rheem treats… Read more
customers - I don't think Rheem will be in business in the long term, and I'll probaly cut my losses with this Brand altogether and get another HWS. This is why Rheem has to advertise so much, they can't exactly rely on word of mouth.
Poor quality, parts failure and no warranty after the first year – Had a Rheem Stellar 330 installed in 2017. Within a few weeks, pilot light went out and unable to relight even by the installer. Piezo igniter replaced under warranty. In Nov 2020, noticed water constantly flowing from the relief valve. Rheem technician came out and found that the thermostat had failed causing the water to constantly overheat. The… Read more
whole thermostat with burner unit along with the relief valve had to be replaced. Inspite of the technician suggesting it was a major failure and would not be billed, received a $580 bill (60% of the original cost of the heater). Be warned, only the physical tank has a 10 year warranty, any part is only covered for 1 year. Not good enough for a system that is meant to last 10 years approx.
Loosing water pressure – Gradually the water got colder and the pressure started dropping off. Water is hot enough to use but the pressure is now awful. Can not find any help tip on water pressure. Cold water pressure is excellent. Show details

Good Value – I have have used 3 Rheem Stellar 130L gas hot water systems. The previous 2 units lasted 10 and 11 years before developing leaks. I bought the same units as it is built into a cavity in an external brick wall. I know it fits with minimal fuss. Unfortunately the latest unit has developed a faulty temperature controller after just 5 years. The… Read more
temperature controller will cost about $250 (Reece) and in the region of $100 to fit. I will investigate an instantaneous gas and depending on cost a Solar/gas solution when replacing this unit.
Garbage product - hot water failure – I live alone. This water is not hot. Stay well away from Rheem. If there is anything I cannot stand, it's a cold shower. The setting is at maximum and the water is cold. Now I'll probably get a "we're sorry to hear this" and let us know how we can help. Then, for a "small" fee, get someone out to tell me they can't do anything about it. Save your money .. go elsewhere Show details
Blew it's lid and damaged the eaves – Installed in 2012 by Celebration Homes. The pilot light kept going out shortly after moving in, the thermostat was replaced under warranty and the controller reinstalled correctly to allow the front lid to close. Now in Feb 2020 the unit decided to literally blow the lid with enough force to punch a hole in the eave above it. Plumber deemed it too… Read more

Only One day in, but perfect so far – Had this installed yesterday, was impressed with how quickly it got up to temperature. Duncan's Plumbing too, checked the old unit one day told me what I needed to do to get the site prepped (different location due to gas and space required from windows) back the next day with everything, 2 hour removal and new install, 1 hour later we have hot water again.
Love this Rheem unit, will be back if I subsequently have any problems, but 5 stars for day 1 and 2.
Great Hot Water Service backed up by Great Service – Unit has been in since 2011. Never had an issue with it. Had is serviced at recommended intervals. Service people do a great job and go through what they have done and any recommendations they have. Show details · 1

I watched my old hot water system literally burst its seems – Our old 315 litre hot water tank was 23 years old and never had the anode replaced...and survived this long however I did take a closer look when I notice some small bits of rust coming from the hotwater outlet in the bathroom.....dead giveaway and when inspecting the old boiler I noticed trickles of water from around the top cover and that the… Read more
top cover was bulging upwards distorting the metal rim. I did my homework and realized that with modern hot water tanks, the anode needs to be replaced every 6 years which is an expensive exercise if you want 20-30 years out of the tank. Quotes to replace the anode are $400-$600 as the tank needs to be drained and opened up to replace the anode, worse if the tank is inside as it has to be removed and taken outside for access. I finally decided to pay the extra for a single element 315 litre SS tank and chose Rheem because it was made in the Moorabbin Vic factory and conforms to Australian standards unlike the units coming out of China/Taiwan/Thailand. I also chose the stainless steel version because as I live in Sydney, the water is good quality and there is no anode to be replaced every 6 years. The unit ways 55 kilograms where as its steel/vitreous tank equivalent weighs 96 kilograms ( without water). Remember that these days extra plumbing and tempering valve is required for 50 degree delivery to ensuite/bathrooms so be prepared for installation cost as well as the replacement of old fittings.. As a guide allow $450-500 for labour and $200-300 for pipework and fittings/valves. The Rheem tank supplies enough hot water for three adults for 2-3 days without re heating as clothes and dishes are washed in cold water. Most tanks these days are fairly much the same in dimensions for equivalent tank capacity. The wife loves it !!!
Very good unit so far – First of all, I'd like to address a complaint from a previous reviewer - Muzza. He said the water was not terribly hot. That IS the fault of the tempering valve which is installed separately by the plumber and is not an original part of the HWS. It's a government requirement. If his water is not hot enough he might need a new tempering valve.… Read more
That's not Rheem's fault.
Our unit is only a year old, but has reduced our natural gas bill by over 30% compared to our old Rheem standard outdoor unit, which was 17 years old. It reheats water very quickly and so far we have never run out of water. I can't speak for the durability or reliability of our unit, and I DO have concerns about the longevity of the external plastic parts. If you share my concerns, I would recommend the Aquamax Stainless Steel unit as almost all of its external parts are metal.
EDIT: Had this unit 6 years now and it still works perfectly.
Great water heater suits my needs. Wish I bought one years ago – Great water heater copes well with high demand. So far have not had any issues with it even with three bathroom showers, and dishwasher running as the same time. Energy efficient as well. Would certainly consider buying another Rheem Stellar 360 again in the future. Show details · 1
good service – Had a problem with pilot light going out rang Rheem and they sent a repairman the next day. He knew what the problem was straight away and it was fixed in half an hour. Hot Water – Had my hws replaced 10 months ago due to inlet pipe leak and the plumber suggested I replace the system due to it's age. $148.00. What a nanny society we live in - I've been using a tape mixing set for 50 years. I purchased a Rheem because it supposedly gave " the hottest hot water you've ever seen".

Pilot light keeps going out after 7 years – Things had been fine up until a year ago when the pilot light kept going out. The ignition switch doesnt work so I have had to light it with a gas lighter. out 15 times, often afte only 2 minutes of being on.
I took a video of what was happening and it appears the burner is only burning on one side some of the time and gas isn’t going through the side where the pilot light is. Support hasn’t been helpful as they know there are problems with some of their units, but would rather send someone out rather than tell me what the issue is.
Disappointing that there is a known issue and you have to pay if you lucked out and have a unit with this issue. Rheem really need to put it out there and say that there is a known issue and help people out rather than making purchasers pay to sort it out.

My old rheem stellar – I had a Rheem Stellar that I bought 18 years ago, the only thing I has to replace in that time is the pressure release valve 2 times. That’s pretty good. I’m was happy with that. I have finally replaced that system today. I hope this unit is as good as the other one. I’ve seen so many bad reviews about this unit. Rheem I hope you won’t let me down this time. I will keep everyone posted. Show details

Gas Guzzler – Had for three years now and this is a gas guzzler. Plenty of capacity but the gas kicks in each time hot water is used. I would have been better off with an instant gas hot water heater. The gas also kicks in randomly through the day/night even when not used. Can't complain about the hot water but I would question the 5 star energy efficiency rating. Show details

Never missed a beat – We replaced the previous Rheem (over 15 years of service) with a new Stellar 130l Now after around 9 years in use, with Wife and 2 kids i dont think we have ever run out of hot water.
