push the lever down empty, let it go through a cycle, then put a piece of bread in it. Even then, it's only lightly toasted. Anything less and it's just warm bread. We always use normal, regular sliced bread so it's not due to it being too thick. Just a horrible product so, thankfully I bought it on sale.
