Samsung 65” QD Oled S90D 4k smart TV Have owned this TV for a year now, it is a December 2024 model, but it is still available and if you can buy this for a reduced price or clearance price you would not be disappointed by its quality and performance. The direct new replacement for this TV is model S90F (QA65S95FAWXXY) Model numbers and Oled… Read more ·  1

types from Samsung can be confusing and their new QD Oled tv’s are amongst the best out there. I learned that the model numbers contain codes that indicate if this is a QD (Quantum dot) or W-Oled (White Oled). WOLED uses white subpixels with colour filters, which offers better bright room performance and deeper blacks due to polarizers, whilst QD Oled uses blue Oled with Quantum dots for purer, more vibrant, and efficient colour, excelling in darker rooms but can struggle with reflections and washed-out colours in brighter light.

I do not pretend to be the technical expert, a lot comes down to personal preference, but in trying to understand the differences I have a friend with a Sony Bravia 8 equivalent TV, which uses Woled panel and after viewing various types of programmes and general TV programmes, decided that the QD Oled gave better results overall. In the Samsung model numbers, the DAWXXY means that it is a QD Oled panel, and the DAEXXY numbers mean it is a Woled panel.

After much debate over buying Oled TV or new mini led tv which have come a long way, decided that the Oled is still the superior TV, mainly for the deeper blacks and contrast which this TV excels at, with Samsung making the QD Oled, which was my preferred option. Price is a consideration for a lot of viewers and Oled tv’s are not the cheapest on the market.

There is also still some fear of Image retention and burn in with Oled, but the modern version Samsung (and LG etc.) has protection methods and pixel shifting etc. built in and unless you are running very static images for very long periods of time, burn or image retention is much less of an issue in general everyday use and not likely to be a problem. But I am still cautious and do not leave the TV with paused screen for long periods of time – having said that if you do leave a still image for more than a couple of minutes, the screen saver function cuts in and turns the screen black with a rotating pattern until such time as you fire it up again.

This TV has an excellent picture and whilst SDR brightness is very good, it excels in HDR10+ broadcasts and its brightness is very good overall to the level where it will give good results even in a room with the lights on because of its great overall handling of reflections, though it is going to struggle a little bit in extremely brightly lit rooms.

The Samsung S90D is great for a variety of usages. If you need a TV for your home theatre, it is an excellent choice due to its perfect black levels, brilliant colours (over 8 million self-illuminating pixels), impressive HDR brightness, and very solid image processing full of detail. Its nearly instantaneous pixel transitions, low input lag, and modern gaming features through HDMI 2.1 with 144HZ VRR with motion rate 200, also make it a great choice for console and PC gamers. The TV has 4 HDMI inputs, 2 of which are HDMI 2.1 and will run 120FPS depending on the source input. The TV also has a very wide viewing angle. The native panel refresh rate is 100HZ.

TV sound can vary a lot, but this model has a rich sound with reasonable bass levels and runs Dolby Atmos cinematic sound with Object tracking sound across the screen to the point where I have not felt the need to add a sound bar.

The TV has a very slim profile; the glass panel itself is approx. 4mm thick which was a bit disconcerting for me as it does flex a little if touched but it seems strong enough. The TV can be wall mounted and I would recommend you follow the manufacturers instruction about the type of wall bracket you use, but I opted to put it on a cabinet on the stand provided. The stand offers good stability but with grandkids running around, I also strapped the TV to the cabinet using straps bolted into the Vesa mount holes just for added security.

The TV runs with Samsung Tizen Operating system couple to Tizen Smart hub, which we are used to and works well for us. It has no problem downloading and adding all the streaming apps we use onto the hub front screen and the functionality for all of this is very responsive and works well.

The remote control supplied is the slim line Samsung version with solar cell on the rear to keep the battery charged in the remote. You can also plug it into a charger via Usb C connection on the bottom. The remote is very small and slim, which is ok, but my only gripe is that it does not have a numeric pad and you must scroll up and down the channels or put your commonly used channels into the favourites list, but it is not a deal breaker.

Once I set the TV up, I followed a review by a TV technical reviewer and re-tuned the TV for better results – there are plenty of sources of information to do this but I turned off all the Eco settings, auto contrast and brightness management systems along with a few other settings that all affect the picture outputs, most designed to save power and put the TV into eco and auto brightness adjustment modes and I found turning them off improves the picture quality and viewing experience to a noticeable degree. Most experts recommend setting the TV into Film maker mode but it does this automatically when watching HDR content – it gives very good results. I do not use film maker mode for non HDR viewing and it is still brilliant.

Have absolutely no regrets in buying this TV, its outstanding!

PROS: Perfect blacks in a dark room with no blooming around bright highlights; Very wide viewing angle for a consistent image from the sides; Good reflection handling means it handles glare in a well-lit room; HDR 10+ for life like colours and very high levels of detail and contrast; Very good cinematic sound and overall sound experience for a TV, with Dolby Atmos; 4 x HDMI inputs, 2 of which are HDMI 2.1 for 144hz gaming input with 120FPS; Screen colours are “life like” and not overblown, no “blooming” or “halo effect” at all; 4K upscaling of SD sources works well; Picture quality in a word is "Brilliant" CONS: Have not found any real cons with this TV, it is near perfect in most respects, but I would prefer the remote to have numeric buttons for selecting channels. I do have voice activated commands on the remote to call up the channel you want which does work reasonably well most of the time.

While the screen quality is unbeatable, the TV operating system is the WORST and seems to get worse with every update completely ruining everything. The constant, unending homescreen advertising you get hit with as soon as you turn it on which varies from hardware stores, to alcohol, to... well, you name it. The way it randomly stops using the… Read more

soundbar and switches to the TV speakers and you have to turn the thing off and on (and get hit by the advertising again). The way it randomly turns on the connected game machine when I'm watching a streaming service or first turn the TV on. The hardcoded buttons to streaming services that can't be disabled. Absolute and utter garbage. This TV CANNOT be recommended. The OS and remote completely ruin an otherwise decent bit of kit.

Already had unit repaired once. New motherboard & speakers. The volume would randomly increase up to 3x fold all by itself. Tv behaved for a few months. Now volume vanishes. It doesn't matter if it's free to air tv or youtube. This model is a lemon. Samsung refuse to replace or refund product. Samsung initially said "the same issue constitutes a… Read more

minor prolem" I've told them over & over, having NO sound isn't the same fault as the sound dramatically increasing by itself. Samsung don't care. Samsung refuse to listen to or help their customers. All they want to do is eternally repair a lemon. I don't want to turn the tv off & on again to get my speakers to work again... & i shouldn't have to for a tv i purchased around 8months ago. A heads up to all people considering purchasing a samsung tv. You've got better odds of winning the lottery than getting Samsung to provide a replacement unit or refund for their irrefutably defective products. Randomly experiencing zero volume is considered a "minor defect"??? I want my money back because i fear if they replace it i will be given another lemon. Not to worry, because i'll never recieve a refund or replacement. Just a repair tech coming every few months constantly replacing the motherboard & speakers. I hope that costs the company more than just simply replacing or refundng the defective product.

A sharp and clear picture, but the user interface is awful. The top half of the Home Screen is dedicated to advertising. I didn’t pay thousands of dollars for a TV to have ads integrated into the basic interface. The tiny remote control is very painful as it lacks basic buttons Show details

TV volume violently fluctuated at random. It would sometimes happen around 20+ times a day, or half a dozen times a day. After contacting Samsung between 3&4 weeks after purchase, I was explained that if I couldn't prove the fault/defect, Samsung would charge me for the technician coming to my house. I requested a refund considering I was… Read more

threatened with being billed by Samsung & the product was faulty. That & I wasn't interested in filming the TV until it malfunctioned. Samsung refused to refund my purchase even though the purchase period was within 4 weeks/28 days.

I couldn't force the tv to malfunction, it would just double, sometimes triple in volume by itself, whenever it felt like doing it. I had to physically film the TV until the fault occurred. Thankfully it happened just after 16minutes of operation. The technician was very friendly & professional & replaced the speakers & motherboard. The randomly fluctuating volume malfunction has now been resolved.

How Samsung's QC department passed this TV is beyond me. The reds are ludicrously oversaturated. To compensate for the atrociously oversaturated reds, the user has to lower the colour setting significantly, which makes ALL other colours less vibrant. Plus Samsung refused to answer my question about if the company owned Bixby. Bixby refuses to allow the TV owner to request a screen test on YouTube. Samsung forces its customers to use its own "inbuilt" screen test, which consists of a highly sophisticated mixed colour palate (a huge steak sandwich with the lot)... Which is designed to OBSCURE a screen fault. A true panel test is of one single colour, rotated throughout all basic colours.

I bought the tv specifically for voice command & oled panel. To have my very first voice command refused was a disgrace. Discovering the oversaturated red was a massive let down. Being threatened with technician service fee was infuriating. Samsung is the most unprofessional company I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I was literally threatened with bill payment of TV technician when I no longer was even interested in keeping their defective product within 28days of purchase.

Samsung intentionally attempt to force their customers to use their own personal "screen test" which is designed to OBSCURE TV panel defects. Samsung produce TVs with a colour palate selected by someone that thinks the colour red should be at least 100,000 lumens bright. I was treated like garbage by Samsung's "customer care" team. I was treated so poorly by Samsung, I will never purchase any of their TVs again, & I will tell every person I meet to never buy their products. UPDATE: TV volume now randomly completely cuts out!!

It just goes quiet, no matter how high you turn the volume up! (Video attached) Samsung have considered this "the same problem" (even though the volume increasing 2x & 3x is NOT the same as the volume ceasing to exist)

Samsung consider this a "minor defect"... Imagine having to turn your tv off & on again to get audio, & having the manufacturer claim non functional audio as a "minor defect"... I have refused repairs & have demanded either replacement or refund, which is currently being "escalated to management"
