Schweigen Silent UM1170 Series

Bought 2 of these back in 2020 as part of a kitchen renovation. First one failed after 4.5 years - an issue with the printed circuit board which cost several hundred $ to have someone replace. Second one failed a few months after the first but haven't fixed that yet. Looking at possibly replacing with a more reliable brand instead. Operationally they were quiet enough and did an ok job of extracting the steam/smoke when they worked. Show details
The Schweigen UM1170-6SP rangehood is great at removing steam, smoke, and cooking smells—no complaints there. It’s definitely quieter than most rangehoods I’ve used, but let’s be clear: it is not silent. Despite having a smooth, properly installed duct (no kinks or concertinaing), it’s still noticeably louder than our dishwasher. What bothers me… Read more
most is the marketing. Schweigen heavily emphasizes the word silent across all their promotions, which set my expectations far too high—especially given the premium price point. I was expecting near silence, but in reality, it’s just quieter than average.
If you’re looking for a truly silent rangehood, you may want to explore other options. This one performs well, but the “silent” label is definitely misleading.
EDIT: the manufacturer got back to me to say my roof plumber installed some things incorrectly and said I needed Schweigen Rangehood installer, not a roof plumber. I live in a small town 3+ hrs from a major city and preferred to use local tradespeople and no one here is a specific Rangehood installer. So if you live in a city and can afford a specialised Schweigen installer, go for it. I’m not impressed with their aftercare service either.
Buttons don't work and switch on and off on their own. The switch has been touchy from day one – The lights keep flashing, buttons keep switching on and off or don't work. Have tried turning the power off and then restarting, works for a bit and then problem starts again Show details
powerful and silent but very expensive to maintain – I bought this less than three years ago when I renovated the kitchen. It costed around $1900. You would expect this will run many years. But unfortunately, within 12 months, the duct was broken which had to be replaced for $300. recently it happened again! Then I noticed that the mash/filter needs to be changed, $60 each, and you need three!. So… Read more
over the past 2.5 years, it had costed me over $600 to keep this machine running. I wouldn't say this is a bad machine, and it works well for the first 6 months. but it has been too costing to maintain it. I am not even a heavy user really and we wash mesh every two weeks in the dish washer. I know they will always say that the motor is outside so pests can eat or damage the duct... (we are not aware of). But that is the reason we pay for such a big price for this machine. Maybe you also need to hire a pest controller regularly to protect this duct etc. Mind you I haven't mentioned the time and effort I spent on calling them and get their technician to come... I also had a couple of issues with other appliances (cooktop and oven) in the new kitchen, but their after sales services are much better.
Unfortunately those things the sale person won't tell you. Yes, it is powerful and silent, but I regret to have purchased this.
Poor service and hidden costs – Silent and powerful function but when it comes to service within warranty period, they tell us to check the rooftop motor for wasps, get an electrician and pay from pocket. Shocking!
Great. Very quite and works really well – This is totally worth the money. No cooking smells in the house, very quite and the lights are fantastic. Really easy to use. I would recommend this to anyone upgrading their kitchen. Show details · 1
Happy customer! – Purchased this 90cm undermount from Harvey Norman back in Jan 2010. It hasn't missed a beat and does the job of removing all odours from our cooking, given that we cook a lot of curries. It had halogen GU10 globes which I have replaced with LED'S from Bunnings. Many of my friends have also gone and purchased same model to install at their home. Would recommend it highly. Show details · 1
The 1600 motor Schweigen is so good we're buying it again for our new house – We've had the current one for 4.5 years. It's been incredibly reliable and outstanding in keeping the curry, stir fry and burnt toast smoke outside. But just a hint.. we have the 900mm range hood on a 600mm induction stove. I have to hold a tissue up to show friends when it's on the highest setting.. They don't believe it can be that powerful and quiet!. And yes.... we were very careful how it was installed - the piping, sizing and no kinks! Show details · 1
Runs like a dream – We installed this in our apartment. We previously had a very noisy and ineffective rangehood. This is seriously silent and highly effective. Living in an apartment it is so important to have an effective fan. Apparently they are even more effective for houses but it works really well in our apartment. We love being able to have a conversation… Read more · 1
without being drowned out by noise. We generally run it on 2 which seems to be enough. If cooking fish or meat, we do run it on 4. There is really nothing to complain about and we'd definitely recommend it to anyone!
LED light strip lets it down – We’ve had our Schweigen for six years. After three years several of the tiny globes in the LED light strip had slowly failed. We contacted Schweigen and paid $31.82 plus $9.09 postage for a replacement strip to be sent to us in WA. Now three years later that replacement LED light strip has gradually lost globes and light emitted is down to… Read more
about one fifth of capacity. I contacted Schweigen in Melbourne last week to order another one and the price for the same part is now around $200 (I nearly fell off the chair) plus $20 for handling and delivery. After some discussion with the sales assistant (which included me measuring the distance of the unit from the gas cooktop trivets) it was agreed they would reduce the cost to $107. It was also suggested last week we have someone check the unit however it slipped my mind to suggest we should have had Schweigen check it out the first time it failed while it was still under warranty. I wonder if Schweigen would honor their product enough to send someone out free of charge to check it now because I feel we may have received a lemon unit Or there is a real problem with the Schweigen LED strips. My query is if anyone else has had this problem? On the positive, we love our Schweigen silent range hood and had one installed two years ago in our holiday home. That was when we didn’t realize the ongoing problem with the LED strip. The unit is very expensive to purchase plus installation cost is high, so to replace the light strip every few years makes it a poor choice when there are other companies now on the market with super quiet products.
Broken down 3 times in 2 years – The PCB and/or button controls have broken down 3 times and been replaced twice in less than 2 years Total of 6 months without a Rangehood. 1. Buttons non responsive-replaced 2.Digital display not working- replaced 3.Whole unit randomly turning itself on and then randomly cycling through the settings (usually ending on a supercharged speed… Read more
which sounds like it’s about to blow up)-PCB and buttons replaced.
The PCB and buttons are such a basic part of this appliance it is very disappointing that it has had so many faults considering the price and advertising.
We have had $600 rangehoods not miss a beat in 10 years and this top of the line specimen can’t even see out the first year without a hitch.
Warranty service is also disappointing, with us having to chase up the manufacturer and the service technician at every turn (hence the 6 months without a rangehood)
In short $2000 that could be better spent elsewhere

Malfunctioned after 3.5-years – Have had the range hood for three and a half years, and was a good fan (although the power settings a tad non-linear and not quite as silent as advertised, but this could be due to installation type). Recently however, it has been turning itself on full blast at arbitrary times. Once it gets into this mode it keeps switching itself on until power… Read more

As Good As It Gets – We have had our Schweigen for 2 years now and have no regrets about paying a little more. It fulfils everything they claim . It`s super silent and extraordinarily efficient . We opted for the S2 motor at 900M3/hr as the roof outlet is not directly overhead . Fantastic appliance . Show details

Powerful and quiet – This rangehood meets the key criterion for our purchase - it is very quiet. So quiet that you need to make sure you do not accidentally leave it on. We got the SP motor as we do a lot of Asian cooking, and it has enough grunt to whip out all the steam and smells. We were slightly concerned as we mounted the unit at a height lower than recommended… Read more
(60cm rather than the 70cm suggested for an induction cooktop) but so far there is no problem with condensation (which the height apparently helps dissipate). It is very expensive though.
Awesome – When I was looking at appliances for our new home the sales bloke took me on a tour of rangehoods, extractor fans etc stopping last of all at the Schweigen. It's super quiet, the motor is on the outside of the house, 5 speed settings, pulls apart easy for cleaning and very bright lights so you can see what you're doing while cooking. The whole… Read more
time we were chatting I didn't realise the thing was even turned on to the highest setting. It is so quiet that I sometimes forget to switch it off. The price tag is pretty hefty but our house has a raked ceiling open plan living/kitchen/dining area which can get noisy. I'm glad we spent the extra coin on getting this as anything else would have driven us around the bend.
Quiet and effective – We bought the schweigen undermount rangehood for our 600mm gas cooktop. We are very happy its performance. The rangehood makes very little noise even at the highest setting and prevents any build up even though we do heavy cooking including frying and indian naans etc.- We have the 1600m3 fan on the rooftop. No complaints so far. Show details
Problem with condensation! – Update: So after 4 years with this item I can honestly say it is the most quiet range hood I have come across. So much that recently I ran into a situation where it wouldn’t turn off. None of the buttons worked and was literally on ALL night until the following morning. Eventually it turned off and hasn’t been able to turn back on since. I… Read more
reached out to Schweigen recently and was quoted parts, nearly $200 worth plus the cost to get a sparky out to replace the parts. The explanation is condensation. I’ve been given a list of reasons why condensation happens which blows my mind. This is NOT my first range hood and I can honestly say, I have NEVER experienced problems with condensation. Is it really a thing?
So if you’re planning on paying above average price for this unit, take into consideration the ongoing cost that you may have to incur every 4 years.

So I've been cooking with an old/near non-existent exhaust fan. Every time I cook, the kitchen windows are open and the ceiling fan is on!
Just installed this beauty and let's just say, the first night I burnt my 'sauteed' garlic twice! I couldn't smell a thing!
And every night since, I keep forgetting to turn it off because it's so quiet! Now I am going to have to remember to use the timer feature.
So if you don't want a quiet and powerful rangehood, stay well clear from this one!

For the first time, a range hood that WORKS and is SILENT – I have remodelled a few kitchens over the years and have never been happy with the range hoods so this time I decided to seek advice about the most effective type to install. Overriding advice was that I needed at least 900cfm airflow and a remote motor/fan to keep the noise down. I bought the Schweigen unit with the motor mounted on the roof. It… Read more
is so silent we sometimes forget that it is working but it extracts smoke, steam and odours in a most satisfying manner. Can't speak highly enough of it but if I did it again, I would get the higher airflow twin-motor unit. Noise is not a consideration as the motors are on the roof at least 5 metres way from the kitchen. The silence is BLISS.
Undermount is good and quiet, however our unit has broken down 3 times in 3 years of ownership – Very stylish unit and good suction with the single powerful 1600w motor. Unfortunately, it has broken down three times in three years. Seems to be an electrical problem as the circuits have been replaced twice now. Basically, the lights flash and the buttons are non-responsive. Let's see if they fix it the 3rd time as it's just outside the 3 year warranty period. Show details
Impressed – We only recently had our kitchen renovated however I am impressed by how quiet this model really is. The planes flying overhead have got to be 20 times louder at least! I have actually left it on it's that quiet. Although I haven't tested the suction on too many occasions it appears to work well. My only recommendation is to have someone install it who works with them regularly. We paid $400 for installation.
Works well but leaks when it rains! – We have had this rangehood installed since mid November 2015. Every time it has rained it has leaked water from the motor unit on the roof, down through the inside of the ducting which drips onto our cooktop and makes a large puddle! Even in only light drizzle/rain. Have had installation checked twice and no issues with flashing etc on roof. Under… Read more
warranty, purchased from Harvey Norman in Christchurch NZ - they are sending us a thingy to go on the motor unit so rain doesn't get in anymore. Will see if that works or not.... Roof is standard 30 degree pitch. Not in an area exposed to severe weather conditions. Schweigen website says units are weather tight unless in extreme/exposed environments, eg: on hills etc.
Unit still works and seems to have great suction power though. And is very quiet, nice to be able to have a conversation while cooking dinner.
Very, very happy with this product – We've had this undermount rangehood for over a year now, and I am extremely happy with it. It's very quiet, even on the highest setting, and is easy to clean. Perhaps the other reviewer would benefit from having their installation checked. The LED lights are a bonus. I have no reservation in recommending this product.

Commercial grade rangehood for home use! – When we bought our house there was cooking fat on nearly every surface in the kitchen/dining area. We installed the Undermount rangehood with an external Isodrive 1600 fan. It was easy enough to install myself in a split level house. Ducting goes through a wardrobe behind the kitchen then through an external wall. I contacted Schweigen Australia… Read more
regarding the appropriateness of this installation, and received a quick response.
The unit is quiet inside, although there is the sound of air flowing through the unit, which is to be expected. The external motor is fairly loud on the highest setting, but, the middle setting is all you ever need, even for wok cooking, etc. There are three aluminium filters which are designed to sit in the plate rack of a dishwasher. The only thing I altered was replacing the halogen lights with leds.
Overall my wife and I are very happy with the unit. The only problem was my procrastination with the installation!
so quiet – I love this rangehood, the power without the noise. Having the motor on the roof is an unbelievable idea. When we first turned it on, it sucked the packaging off the cooktop!! The light is powerful, and love that the fan has a timer to switch it off after finishing cooking. High power, low noise - perfect for our open plan kitchen/dining/living Haven't found anything yet
Silent and powerful! – Have it installed in our kitchen. Works really well and is very very quiet. Also looks great in our kitchen! Very impressed! Motor is installed outside so nice can get through but was surprised with the amount of suction. Very efficient and quiet. Also easy to clean and maintain. Expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for. Great suction and very very quiet! Almost silent.
Only ok – I would not recommend this rangehood. We have just installed this rangehood in our new kitchen. It looks great and seems like it will be easy to clean but it isn't very quiet. Infact it is quite loud on setting 4 and 5. I was told it was almost silent but I think it is almost as loud as our old Smeg SlimJim. We have it above our induction cook… Read more
top and when the saucepan is boiling you can see the steam move away to the side and then come back into the rangehood on setting 2 and above. It isn't strong enough to get all the stream on setting 1. Tonight the smoke alarm went off when we were cooking steak. The rangehood wasn't up to it even on setting 5. Looks smart, seems easy to clean, Loud, not sucking well enough, costly
