Interested in a portable external hard drive to hold my music (13000 + songs) - was thinking of the Seagate 4tb. Need something easy. Any views?
go for toshiba very reliable
I have a Seagate desktop hard drive. Worked fine for a year and now I can't get power to it. My boyfriend has one and he only used it twice and now the same problem has happened to his. Any ideas what has happened or how I can fix it? I've tried a new power supply and still won't work on either hard drive. Frustrating!!
If your power supply plug came in two parts, you may have loosened it slightly with plugging in and unplugging. That was my initial problem with my hard drive. The power supply plug came in two parts (probably cheaper overall with different plugs internationally). When I put it together it looked and seemed ok, but it wasn't, no power at all. I found out by accident that this power supply does actually work. I went to plug it into a power board and it was a bit stiff so I leaned over it and put some force on it. That's when I heard a click and yes there was power running through it. So all along it had been the connection between these two parts that was the problem. I had put it together properly, but it just had not quite connected properly. Originally I snapped it together with my fingers holding it in my hands and would have plugged it in as normal pushing it in with my fingers, but when I got it to work and heard that click - I used my hands and leaned into it pushing the plug into the power board. The other option is to find a power supply that is sealed and comes as one part and not two, but I believe the power supply output needs to be the same (eg 12v - 1.5A). This will be on the power supply itself. Try the power supply on something else (making sure of the matching output still). That way you will know for sure if the problem is something to do with the power supply and not your hard drive. If it is the hard drive (hopefully not as you may lose data/files) it may still be under warranty. I believe Seagate has a three year warranty. Good luck.
Hi Anton,
Could you share with me the "neutering procedure" you performed on the Seagate Expansion Desktop? I would like to use the usb-sata interface as a generic interface to allow me to connect/disconnect drives.
Regards,
Rudi
Hi, the flash chip needs to have the PCB tracks scored to revert it back to an OEM controller and remove the special Seagate firmware. Please be warned that this is very small and one slip or wrong cut track will destroy the controller. The small round pads are the 4 data lines, I cut the traces just behind it in the off chance it disabled it and I could revert it back but cutting it proved successful.
Be warned that this controller is made for a low power drive and using another HDD may overload the inbuilt 12v-5V controller or fry the plug pack.
Let me know how you get on regardless.

I cant see the indication light in image....of expansion 1 tb hard disc.....is that there?
Iam assuming as you mention image you are referring to a picture?. All the harddrives I've used have all had an indicator light. The position seems to vary front ,back or side . So I suppose you may not see in a picture. As they assist you in telling you what the drive is doing and power on. Just ask retailer to check when you purchase. I don't know if any don't?
Single blue LED on the top of the housing above the USB plug is steady when idle and flashes when accessing or off when the USB cable is unplugged and drive is in powered standby. Blue for both USB2 and USB3 modes.
Was given a Seagate expansion drive as a present. None of the detachable power plugs fit Australian power points. Where do I get one that fits thats removeable?
Interestingly the one I bought came with Australian, European, US and UK slide on adapters. It was fitted with the US adapter but that just slides off to fit the AU one. No idea where you might get just the slide on thingy... sorry...
Thanks. Yes mine was same but no Aus plug. My nephew reckons he can get one for me
what cables do i need to plug it into my lg tv as it want play through the usb port on my dvd or tv
Mine has the same problem. I cannot find a solution
Hi, I had the same problem. Rang LG, They have a limit on what Harddrive can connect. Max is around 1TB. I tried to even resize wouldn't work so I ended up just buying a normal 1tb harddrive and Iogear MediaShair Hub
Does it plug straight in to the tv to watch downloaded movie?
Depends on that voltage of your tv USB input. Most TVS won't support it because it needs more voltage
