1 Yvonne  · Sugar – Main ingredient is SUGAR! 22.8 g per serve. Absolutely disgusting!
1 Caleb F.  · Unbelievable – How on earth is this legal? "NUTRITIONALLY COMPLETE" and 50% sugar on the same package!

Are you serious? – How does nestle keep getting away with this. The sugar content alone is mind blowing - and to slap the words hospital grade on? Ludacris! This kind of thing is what’s keeping people sick. Show details

Sugar drink – 50% of the tin is sugar, equating to 30g of sugar per serve, or about 5 heaped teaspoons. Just 13.8g protein per serve and 1.5g fat of which 1g sat fat. Show details

Excellent Product! – This is the best stuff, been using for prob 25 years, first got onto it in hospital & been taking it ever since. I usually have 2 a day, I've never put on weight or lost weight on it. I have no issues with the taste of any of the flavours. Mixes well in a shaker with ice & water. Heaps of energy & just feel better. There have been times I have… Read more

stopped taking it for a few weeks & I can always tell, feeling tired, running on empty etc. This is good stuff & cheap ... stock up on special $20 a can, usually free post as well. If your feeling tired, run down etc, give this a try.

Anyone saying it's bad for you... they would not use this in hospitals... if it was.

Optimum works for me – Due to stress from life altering circumstance, I found myself just not ever feeling hungry, my BP was a risky high and depression also played a part. My dr advised me to take Sustagen optimum as it can be used as a meal replacement and even tho' I eat very little, I no longer feel hungry/nauseous and have more energy. There's only 8% sugars in… Read more

the recommended dosage ( those saying that it's 50% are not right ) I would advise others with poor appetite to talk to their drs first to explore the possible reasons for not being able to enjoy their food but for me, optimum has worked for about 3 months now and I've not gained extra weight, in fact I've probably lost a kg or 2, haven't weighed myself lately so not sure, but my weight rarely changes anyway. Chemist W/house often has it on special, I just bought 2 @$33, free delivery from CW ... so is on average no more expensive than other nutritional drinks

This stuff has been keeping me alive for the last few months – I use the hospital active coffee flavour as its the easiest to drink. . but it still starts to taste icky after a little while if you actually know what coffee tastes like so i add a little decaf coffee powder for taste. We use a protein shaker with a mixer ball to help mix this up and i like it best mixed with cold water and ice. Ive been… Read more

struggling with some kind of sinus or throat infection which has messed with my appetite and is making it almost impossible to eat and this stuff has kept me alive. I was so weak initially that i could barely walk but having this twice a day along with some V8 juice and powerade plus whatever real food that i can manage to get down is keeping me going so the doctors can figure out what is wrong. Ive got zero complaints. My hubby mixes them in the morning so i just have to grab them from the fridge and drink. Also, as a lupus sufferer with digestive issues. . . . ive had almost no digestive pain while on the sustagen and usually i have a lot.

Can’t be healthy – How can this product be healthy for anyone with so much sugar in it? It made my teeth and gums go on edge when I drank it. Made a mistake by purchasing it. Show details

How this could be considered healthy is beyond my comprehension – The only thing good about this drink is its misleading name. Sadly, this is often prescribed by doctors, but it is more of a sugar drink. Sugar is already in excess in most people’s diet and contributes directly to degenerative disease such as diabetes and there’s even evidence for contributing to memory issues. I have gone to great lengths to keep my 96-year-old mother away from this, even though it’s prescribed by the medical doctors.

Far too sweet and too much saturated fat. Terrible! – I bought this after reading about it on the internet. Thinking I needed some extra vitamins I bought it yesterday, after 1 and a half doses ( couldn’t finish the second dose) I feel I have wasted my money. Too sweet and 9grams saturated fat each serve.

Perfect for elderly poor eaters – My father-in-law lives on this stuff. Literally. Unable (and also unwilling) to eat much else than lollies and drink beer (!), my 87-year-old FIL actually lives on this stuff. He readily drinks and enjoys it, and willingly makes it up for himself. He is fitter, healthier, and more "with it" than the poor state he was in before his wife got him on… Read more

this. Sure, it's loaded with sugar (and probably something anyone who is not a fussy, old person with poor nutrition would best avoid), but I cannot fault it otherwise. Oh, and the silly idea that the "artificial" vitamins it contains are - somehow - not as good as "natural" vitamins, is patently ridiculous. Vitamins are vitamins, no matter how they are derived!

Great stuff. I've been using it for years – I try to stick with a healthy diet, but when I'm feeling ill, which isn't very often, I start taking Sustagen and mix it with full cream milk, water, and ice. Since I've started doing this, the duration of any colds and flu etc. is much shorter. I take it for a couple of weeks after the illness subsides to give my body the nutrition it needs to… Read more

recover. I've been doing this for years and would highly recommend it. Full cream is my milk of choice, but I'm sure it would work for those who prefer Lite or skim milk instead.

Excellent energy booster – I love this stuff, I have no idea why so many are leaving negative reviews. It has REALLY helped me get through alot of days thanks to the extra energy. Now the one with fibre also helps with bowel movements. Especially if your really sick and stuck in bed, it's an easy energy boost you WILL notice. I started when in hospital and have used it ever since, and always will! Show details

Too too sweet yuk – I t is far too sweet makes you feel like throwing up. I had a sample of the Vanilla it was not as sweet as this 840g tin. Can I add water melon or other fruit something to make it more palatable, I have to take it twice a day and that going to be hard if not impossible, and it is not cheap. Show details

Neutral formula too sweet – The Neutral Hospital Formula is far too sweet. I fail to see how the product is supposed to be able to be added to savoury dishes and sauces etc considering how sweet it is. Show details

Re Sustagen Hospital Vanilla – I was under the impression that Sustagen Hospital Vanilla was not as noticeably sweet in the past as it is now. I know now that it is not my imagination and that it is a lot sweeter than it was 12 months ago when I was taking it as a dietary supplement for quite a while and it did accomplish what it was supposed to do. Show details

Sustagen hospital – Sustagen hospital is great, but it doesn't dissolve properly, even though I mix it with boiling water, before I add the milk. I end up with a pile of ''gunk'' at the bottom of my glass, that I have to wash down the sink.

Changed taste of Vanilla – Used Sustagen Hospital Strength Vanilla in the past in the blue can which has been updated/replaced with new Sustagen Hospital Strength Active Vanilla which has a VERY strong taste bordering on a caramel flavour to it to my tastebuds & I did notice a slightly smaller can size as well - 840g from previous 900g. I used to actually like the original… Read more

taste of the Vanilla but now the taste is nowhere near as nice tasting. I also noticed the powder mixes differently into the milk as well - frothing on top differently. Not sure why Nestle had to change what was always a great product. Alarmed at jump in sugar content which is clearly the taste change - NOT necessary. I might try the Natural flavour to see if its less sweet. Please Nestle change it back & stop being stingy as well - back to 900g too!

Correcting misconceptions about the product – From a dietetics point of view, the product is of great use in the hospital setting. Despite certain beliefs, the hospital formula does contain vital nutrients required for optimal recovery in patients. Some of the suggested comments have said that the product can be easily replaced with a glass of milk and fruit, but this is narrow-minded… Read more

thinking. The product is not only used for 'general health' purposes. In fact, specialists in the field (who are in-fact nutritionally educated) use this product for those who are malnourished, require enteral feeding or oral nutrition support, or are hypermetabolic. Therefore, the added sugars, vitamins, milk powder and minerals actually serve a purpose for those patients who cannot eat solid foods (i.e. tube fed, mouth ulcers, swallowing difficulty, lack of teeth, malabsorption, risk of aspiration etc..) or have higher protein and energy requirements due to an energy-taxing medical condition. So before you disrespect professionals in the field who know what they are doing, I highly recommend you keep your insults to yourself.

Way too much sugar – The hospital formula contains way too much sugar to be good for your health. Powdered milk and a daily multi-vitamin pill will do exactly the same thing without all that sugar. What a rip-off!

Most effective food replacement – I went through a major operation was unable to eat solid food or even a drink 4 ten days due to a ruptured esophagus. This drink was the only product that i was able to consume Vanilla was great compared to the more sickly flavours make sure it is the hospital version. Ensure is another brand at the chemist great flavour a bit more expensive.

It's been the best thing for my child – My child battles to pick up weight. (Wish I had the same problem ;-)) We have been from carbs to full creams and more (meats) protein diets and nothing works like sustagen. She trains really hard and we have found that sustagen helps her through "tough" training. The doctor and dietician also suggested to drink it after a muscle injury that didn't want to heal. We feel that it did the job and I will recommend it to people doing "real"training.

This product is a scam! – Calling this a 'Hospital Formula' is such a scam. This product is just dried milk, sugar and a fairy sprinkle of synthetic vitamins. You would be better off having a glass of milk and a piece of fruit. It is NOT healthy. Synthetic vitamins, at the level in this product, do not encourage healthy eating or promote health. If you want the extra… Read more

vitamins/minerals you are better off taking a multivitamin/mineral tablet (with the milk and fruit!). The fact that doctors and nurses promote this in hospitals is such a scam and shows their level of nutritional knowledge is so inadequate (do they get kick backs I wonder?).

Sickly sweet! Made me nauseous. Would not buy it again for anyone – The sugar content of this formula was so high I could not drink it. Has the formula changed in the last few years? It is so sweet it is sickly.

Why the sugar content – This supliment has all the nessesary ingredients then they kill it with so much sugar it's undrinkable . Sugar and salt should not be involved in any health suppliment as any nutritional expert will agree.

Too sweet in taste and smell – Proform Nutritional Supplement in neutral is fantastic, I've not tried vanilla or chocolate but I doubt they'd be as sweet as Sustagen. Sadly the neutral sustagen is too sweet.
