Teac DVS1000HD

Efficient cheap unit! – We needed a STB and grabbed this at Target for less than $80. Its a little clunky changing between modes, and the EPG and TV guide interface is pretty average, but it works like a charm, plays most formats and delivers what it says. Teac support is pretty [censored word removed], if you happen to need it, as I was enquiring how to update firmware and what the changes actually were....and still haven't received a reply. but for a cheap plug and play, pretty damn good!
Nothing More Than A Paperweight! – Utterly useless: the EPG was 36 hours out and unless you are at home to press the Record and Stop buttons, the PVR is pointless. Two wasted months with Teac customer service to find that it is a set top box with the ability to play a DVD and nothing more. Do not buy this product - absolute waste of space!!! Looked good on paper, compact. Does not deliver on its' promises!
Better than expected – I bought one of these units second hand, to connect to a dvd/pvr recorder. It came in the original box and had the remote plus cables with it, but no manual. There is also an HDMI ouput which I don't use (yet). The unit was easy to connect up, and worked perfectly using the analog avi output , providing a signal that is easly recorded by both the PVR/DVD, and a Terabyte external drive via the USB. You can also watch DVD s. The switch between Tuner/ DVD player/ USB is via the 'source' button, and causes a bit of a flash on the big screen TV as it rolls through these options. None the less, it settles down and does all that's asked of it without protest. Picture and sound are fine. Prior to this I had a Digitec Unit from JayCar. The screen interfaces of both units was, to my great surprise. identical. The Teac, however responds faster to remote commands and allows faster channel changes. It also records on timer while shut down, and doesn't turn off after 24hrs of inactivity as does the Digitec. (maybe I've got settings wrong in the Digitec...can't be bothered trying to sort it now as the Teac fills all gaps rather well). Overall, this unit, although possibly close to being obsolete, is a gem and I would have no hestitaion recommending it. I also have a TEAC HDB841 which is an HD tuner only - slightly different screen interface but also a great machine. Easy set up, USB recording and playback is simple and easy. Picture and sound are all to HDMI standard' A bit 'clunky' switching between sources - no real problem
