Thermos Dura-Vac

Always hot enough if you use it properly – Works fine for me. No problems with not keeping food hot. I suspect all those people complaining about it not keeping things hot or cold aren't following the maker's instructions. For it to work as intended you have to: - Heat it up or cool it down with hot or cold water for 5-10 minutes before adding food or drink. - Make sure the food or drink… Read more
is as hot or cold as you can make it before putting it in.
I ran a test in which I preheated mine then filled it with boiling water and measured the temperature over the next day using an accurate thermometer (a Type K thermocouple). This is a summary of what I got:
Start 99.4°C 3 hours 82.4°C 6 hours 69.3°C 9 hours 59.9°C 12 hours 53.0°C 24 hours 37.1°C
If I put hot soup in at breakfast time it will still be plenty hot for lunch. Over 50°C 12 hours later should be hot enough for most people.
On the other hand, if you put in food at the temperate you normally eat it at rather than making it as hot as you can, it is going to be too cool when you come to eat it. Its the laws you can't break - the laws of physics.
Can't believe this is sold under the Thermos Brand! – A third disaster from Thermos. They should hang their heads in shame. Why put your name to products that are rubbish? I bought this brand on the name only - and it has let me down 3 times. Surely it costs less to make ONE line of good products rather than three lines of cheap products that will end up in the bin? the stopper comes with a silicone seal. No wonder mine always leaks - it never had one in the first place!!!
As mentioned in a different review, it doesn't keep ANYTHING hot or cold because it has no glass wall (the reviewer who gave it 4 stars must be talking about a different Thermos product, or ties a beanie around it - this is what I had to do with mine to keep any drink reasonably anything, making the Thermos fatter than it already is!). The previous thermos (long, thin - black with red lettering) didn't leak but didn't keep things hot/cold as it had no glass wall either. What's the point?
The first thermos (long, thin, silver) kept things hot and cold but the push-in stopper leaked! (only the screw-on top kept it from leaking right out). I decided to store Coke in this; when I wanted a drink some hours later - I poured myself a cupful of glass-y Coke (the glass inner wall was completely broken due to the release of the carbon dioxide)! No warning in the instructions about not storing carbonated drinks in it! (ie. you would have to shake them up to make them flat before storing - kind of defeats the idea of a fizzy drink!)
No more Thermos for me.
EDIT After realising mine was missing a silicone ring, I used a black rubber one I'd found on the road that fitted exactly. No more leaks! Many thanks, reviewer. However, it still doesn't keep drinks anywhere near hot or cold unless wrapped up (even then, nowhere near as good as a vacuum-walled one), so pretty useless.
Leaks – Silicone O-ring seal on stopper failed after light use. THERMOS told me no, I must purchase new stopper. Replacement with postage close to cost of original THERMOS. THERMOS BRAND = EARTH KILLERS FAIL!
Totally useless Thermos – Its easy to carry but thats about all. This unit DOES NOT keep things hot as stated it did work for a couple of weeks over 11 month period. I went to use it in Jan 2019 but when we went to make smoko the water was near cold, have only just arrived home to try and sort it out. Being older I have had several THERMOS over the years and this is the worst I've had. Would certainly NOT recommend this unit. Show details
Disappointed – I purchased two of these for use in our caravan. They don’t keep water hot for more than 2 hours despite filling them with boiling water to warm them first. I purchased them trusting the Thermos branding. Never again.
Seriously ? – Just purchased one and it took me 30 minutes to get the strap which was inside the thermos!!!!! it is a wonder I didn't break it trying to get it out.
Terrible – Don't buy one, they are Chinese rubbish. When I fill it with hot water immediately the outside is hot. Thermos you are shameful. What a nasty product & a waste of good money.
Not happy – I have had my Dura-Vac Thermos for about 18 months.. Has been working quite well but the last couple of times I have used it the outside has become very hot and the liquid inside is luke warm about 2 hours later. I did as I always do and heat it with hot water before use. Not keeping coffee warm.
Almost perfect – Been using this chap for a couple of months now, 5 days a week for work. It seems to keep my half a litre of coffee piping hot for a good 3 hours. I'm able to fit my hand inside to clean it too, at a push. I've got smaller hands for a bloke though so probably no good for any guy with wide hands. Only one issue I've had is that it seems to leak… Read more
just the smallest amount of watery coffee every now and again. I can't work out where it comes from as the seals are good. As it is watery I'm guessing it could be from the gap in the handle. Also the handle doesn't seem very well attached.
Otherwise I'm very happy with the product. Keeps coffee warm and easy to clean inside Leaks a little bit.
Used every day – Compared to cheap "no name" versions, these seem to work better (mainly in the lid seal). All stainless steel, although the lid sometime seals shut too tight if very little air space is left. The metal shell on the "cup/lid" comes loose after a while and gets water in it after washing. Does it's job well enough
