TomTom Via 225

Navigation was Fine but Updating Maps always a Dreaded Chore – I purchased my TomTom Via 225 in 2016. It worked fine for the purpose of navigating, however updating maps was always troublesome and certainly not as simple as it should be. I received one of TomTom's email reminders to update my TomTom device. I followed the instructions to the letter, but noted the device took longer than usual to connect… Read more
itself to the Laptop.
Finally it did after a patient 10mins. I selected update all and after 3mins a big red cross appears on both Nav Unit and Lap Top saying "error - something went wrong" I switch off the Nav, let it power down, disconected and started the procedure again, 20 times no less.
I became suspicious and once disconnected from laptop checked my maps loaded on the TomTom. I had 2, New Zealand and Australia, with supposedly Australian Maps for Life.
Now the fun part - Australia maps had completely disappeared, so had all my favourite addresses.
Terrific I'll get the Chat Robot to assist. Yeah right it was as useless as tits on a bull. No way to contact TomTom, no email address, or phone number, nothing. No way of actually liaising with an actual person.
So in my disgust I purchased a Garmin Drive 51 LM Nav device. Free maps for life, great support (i rang and checked them out) Email, phone No. and Postal address all clearly accessable, like a good company should be.
Needless to say I'll never purchase another TomTom product again, and be warned think carefully before you do!
No maps found – I bought this device in March 2016 to give to my parents travelling around Australia. I had no need to used it until today (June 2019) so I have kept it in a box, waiting the next time someone needed it. Today, I took it out, plugged it in my car and it refused to start UNLESS it was connected to a computer. So, I had to install Tom Tom Connect… Read more
and connect to my laptop. I updated all the software as I was forced to do and... ! The Australia Map that was previously on the device (FREE LIFETIME MAPS) disappeared, and the only option for me was to purchase a new one for $90!!!! No way to recover it unless (apparently) you have a backup of the map... (Hey, I didn't ask for an update! I was forced to do it!!!)
I'm not asking for the updated map - no big deal - but I want what I paid for, my original 2016 Australia Map! It sounds a scam - specially with the "Free Lifetime Maps" Deal!
TomTom? No thanks, Never Again!
Free lifetime maps – Purchased a via 225 with free lifetime maps. Tomtom are now refusing to support this gps with free map updates. Surely lifetime should mean for the life of the unit. What gives Tomtom the right to stop supporting a unit that you have paid to get the free map up dates with. This will be the last product I buy from this manufacturer.
Tomtom after sales service is discusting the 225 is faulty and they sell them this way – Tomtom 225 go via this product is faulty won't switch to night colours when selected won't switch speed zones for kilometers won't charge battery as its too hot sends me down dead end streets sends me down roads that don't exist dosent know the name of the main road in toowoomba qld aus and tomtom sell them this way I have had mine replaced with… Read more
another faulty unit you get 1 year warranty but only 6 months on the replacement that dosent work if you only had your new one for 4 months before starting to argue with the company to get it fixed you don't even get 12 months this company has gone down hill and looks like it hasn't invested in new technology to keep up with the times trying to talk with people in other countries who don't or can't comprehend English is designed to frustrate you and make you go away so the problem goes away as well if you read the warranty it states that compensation can be sought so that is what I had to threaten them with to get mine soughted DO NOT BUY ANY OF THEIR PRODUCT TOMTOM IS NOT A COMPANY YOU WANT TO SPEND A SECOND OF YOUR LIFE ON I purchased this item from HARVEY NORMAN in Warwick Qld and they were less than helpful
It will work for 2 years max – Tomtom 225 has some signal problem. Turn gps off before turning off your car, otherwise it will have some chipset or memorising problem and it also hang a lot. Very expensive, you can buy similar gps at much cheaper price, so why wasting heaps of money on this trouble? Warranty does not cover me for that. No and never to TOMTOM.
died after the warranty period is over – Got a new tom tom as a gift and it stopped working after the warranty period was over, which is one year. do not buy this product or any tom tom product as they won't be helping you once your product stops working outside the warranty. Stay away from tom tom products
Was excellent, now cannot charge it – Pros : Accurate, although it does drop out sometimes after roadworks moves a road. Easy to use, clear screen, good colours, easy to update once MyDrive syncs with a computer. Cons : Often won't accept a street number No battery light so don't know if it's charging or not. A messagde appears now and then, and a warning beeps when the charge… Read more
is low.
The charging cable / power cord has a special left hand angled fitting due to the shape of the case which means that most micro USB cables don't fit properly and the Tom Tom cord must be used. However Tom Tom cannot supply them. Which means I can no longer charge it and I may as well toss it. The places that sell it don't supply the cables either - very poor.
Any suggestions for charging it very welcome.
Easy To Use, Reliable, Almost Accurate All The Time – 4.5 out of 5!!! This GPS Unit TomTom VIA 225 (Or TomTom Start 25) Give me Confidence Driving Gives Incredible Information on the Go (Distance to Go, Distance Remaining, Time Remaining, Current Time) Has High-Class Features (Most of them Accurate!!!) Takes You on the Go (Fast Routes Option is Excellent). The Only Drawback... It tells… Read more
your Speed 3 to 4 KM Less Than Your Actual Speed!!! I don't Know Why, But It is Easily Manageable.
Love TomTom for it Product, Update Service, Reliability, and Ease of Use.
I would Give 4.5 out of 5 Score!!!
Dodge this one – Had a Tom Tom XXL540 that I was happy with. As the cost of upgrading maps was almost the cost of a new Tom Tom with lifetime maps I decided to purchase a new unit. What a mistake that was. I have many of the problems other people have pointed out but the thing that annoys me more than anything else is the "unable to find satellite" constantly… Read more
coming up. I recently travelled to Yamba and the amount of times this unit could not get a GPS signal I may as well have left it at home. After the reviews on the VIA 225 anybody who purchases one of these deserve what they get.
Same frustrations – I have the 6 inch, and after the latest update I had the same problems. It wouldn't let me put in a new adress. So I did a totally factory reset and it works fine. Now I'm afraid to ever update it again. The good thing about the Tom Tom is that you can put in a crossing as a destination.
Don't buy Tom Tom via 225 it's got multiple problems!!! Very bad GPS for Tom Tom – I've been using my Tom Tom via 225 for about 6 months now, and I would highly recommend not buying this GPS! It has all sorts of system problems! The most annoying problem, is that if you put in an address and have to later change address, as the first address is wrong, or someone's not home and is at a different address, the GPS wont allow you to… Read more
change the address ever, so you have to drive to the first entered address, to unlock the Address button so you can type in a new different address. So basically, there's no way to change address once it's set once, you can't ever get it to change, once you enter it! Then sometimes, for no apparent reason, the Address button wont work, so you can only go Home or to Recent Destinations, as there is no other option as the Address Button is grayed out. This GPS has so many quirks, I can't rate this Tom Tom item low enough to describe how bad it is! Don't buy it, unless you're a fool or are just plain stupid and like being annoyed by a GPS that has system related problems!
TomTom Via 225 – My second after the previous one failed. Be aware, it has a safety risk as the mount dropped-off the windscreen, frequently while driving interstate highways. Have to unmount the whole attachment to store it. Latest map do not cover all newly developed areas (even 5-year-old suburbs) of Canberra.
More than happy with TomTom – I came out of the dark ages (hard copy maps) September 2014 and purchased a TomTom Via 225 from The Good Guys at Bankstown NSW for $127-00. At age 75 and not up with all the latest electronic whizbangery I did have some difficulty registering the devise to My Drive Connect (TomTom). After an e-mail and phone call to customer service, Tarkesh T.… Read more
contacted me and could not have been more helpful. All fixed and now that I have learned to drive the unit it is GREAT. Could not speak more highly of the product.

A device that made me angry – -Opened my newly boxed GPS device and nothing seemed to be out to place. -I've turned it on, was asked to connect the device to my computer and update it. -Next step, went to www.tomtom.com/getstarted to install 'MyDrive Connect' -Had to make an account to update it. -Updated, now the device does not work. -My anti-virus protection… Read more

-Got mad, uninstalled and ask a refund for an fraudulent device.
Can't get it to be recognised on computer – Tried for an hour to get computer to recognise the unit. Tried resetting. Tried all the recommendations. I am a bit of a tech head so these things don't usually phase me but I think I have to admit defeat. Back to the store for me to get a refund might be easier.
If Customer Support Even Existed the Unit Might Be Worth Keeping – "No Maps Found"!! After successfully updating twice, the system failed. When I tried to update again, I got that dreaded message "No Maps Found". Customer support could not understand the problem or did not want to know. I paid for lifetime maps, but the lifetime of my device was about 9 months. I followed the online instructions to the letter,… Read more
but like so many with similar complaints posted on the TomTom site, I found that those instructions are totally inadequate. My TomTom could not find its way to the recycling center, but fortunately I knew the way there.
Tom Tom has one more dedicated EX Customer. Reluctantly gave 1 star rating, because "Terrible" is the lowest you can register.
So easy to use – Very simple to use, Was$149 paid $114 problem registering account as I have already a Tom Tom it wouldn't let me use the same email address so had to use GMail. Had to take Kapersky security off computer while I registered and then put Kapersky back on . Even husband can use it !! Show reply
Poor support – Just purchased my 2nd Tom Tom. I had been happy with an older version. New one is for a second car. The new one was hard to update/register there is no automatic recognition as per older type. When I tried to register Tom Tom's site will not accept a second account/device when using the same email address!!! They want to delete my previous… Read more
device OR to register my new device with a new email address. Product support was unhelpful, simply gave me the same answer as the website, no reason given just told "you need to have a new email address". I cannot open a new account using the same email but a different password?
Instead of a new email address I will purchase a different brand unit to replace the older unit which I was paying for map updates.
Disappointing (Update 2015 Not to bad) – Cons Have to remove mount every time it is removed from windscreen Connection lead to short to run from console to windscreen in my car. 04 commodore had to buy extension. Brings up warning page about use whilst driving but needs confirmation button pressed to go to map mode. Very annoying and cant be turned off in the settings menu! {update… Read more
2013 this was corrected via an update but the misleading pois have never changed and it has had 2 map updates. Adelaide SA}
Many mistakes with poi found so far. Don't exist and wrong side of the road.
Route voice directions frequently missed or to close to corner to turn safely.
Street names rarely announced
Battery life not connected is less than 2 hours brand new.
My old navman s80 was way better than this at least you could listen to directions the tom tom via 225 cant be trusted to just listen to you have to refer to the map.
(Update 2015 Adelaide SA)
Maps have improved over the updates released. I now believe that the best time to get a GPS is at the end of it's product cycle as the maps are sorted and Tom Tom regularly releases updates for their maps unlike others. My brother bought a Tom Tom GO 50 and was disappointed In Adelaide many roads are not being labeled whilst in regular drive mode and no clock display. You would think that the map corrections would be implemented across the range? DSE wouldnt return for credit on the cheaper unit Via 225 that works now a lot better than it did when I first got mine. Fast Startup, character voices, lifetime maps updates, character voices available Delays announcing turn untill to close and if you rely on this you will pass it
Stupid Route choices – Only a week old and already disappointed. I was heading south from the Brisbane CBD on the South East Freeway. I knew that I needed to go to exit 14 (14 km south). It tried to get me off each exit prior to the correct one and would have gone some crazy way to destination. Each time I passed the exit, it would recalculate and update the ETA to a faster time! I double checked the settings and YES, I had fastest route selected.
Pretty average performance – Only bought this a week ago after Tom Tom sent an email promoting it's new quick fix gps to download. Well I downloaded it and it totally crashed my gps. Dead. black screen. nothing. Thanks heaps Tom Tom. I know it was nearly 3 yrs old but it was still working. Anyway had to buy a new gps. Didn't want a fancy new gps so looked through all the… Read more
reviews. None were particularly good so bought this because it was: affordable, had spoken voice instructions and lifetime maps. Like "disgrunteld", mentioned in his post, I also had a heck of a job trying to register it because of the same reason. Stupid Stupid system. I eventually managed it. The fixing to the windscreen hasn't improved much on previous models and in fact it fell off while I was driving down the highway. It needs superhuman strength to secure it - not an easy task when you're trying to get in to to the cnr. of your windscreen. It also made a couple of ridiculous choices for routes. It tried to direct me on to a left turn which would then take me approx. 4klms in almost a full circle to enter the motorway when all I needed to do was take a right turn and travel along one street for less than a klm. The lane guidance is good and the spoken street names is helpful but it's also difficult to see the screen when wearing sunglasses, which here in Qld is almost essential. Will give it a few more weeks and see how things go but so far, it's a pretty ordinary gadget.
An absolute bloody waste of time – After spending five hours trying to register (previously had an early model which was registered) I discovered that you cant register 2 different models to the one account so you have to create a new account with a different email address. I tried to do that but fond that loading the webpage through firefox (their choice) was very slow and… Read more
script couldn't load so the website kept freezing. An absolute bloody waste of time - I will never buy another Tom tom despite my early model been terrific and easy to use.
Sometime later: In frustration I got a computer genius in (at some cost) and after about half an hour or whizzing through many screens, he was able to register and from then on, everything worked smoothly. We used the Tom Tom while traveling and had no issues with it. So I still give it a 1 star rating because of the registration issue but if you are really computer literate, you it should be fine. Looks nice Could not register.

think it so much better than a Navman – i got mine a week ago and must say i think its better than the 1 year old top of the range Navman, easy to use quick and fast and finding a different way to get there. good value for money and a very nice unit very easy to see and i like it very good nothing was wrong
Very basic - lacks useability – The Tomtom Via 225 has poor system design coupled with a user manual that fails to aid the user in many aspects and fails to reflect the actual device. It can only store a single route. The user must clear any existing route prior to planning a new route. Recent Destinations should be renamed Locations and also include departure locations. … Read more
Failed to know the location of Station Pier in Melbourne. I had to consult a street directory to identify a street near to Station Pier. Cannot delete a single location, can only delete ALL locations. There is no dashboard mount only windscreen - one has to purchase addition gear to mount it on the dashboard. not much needs a complete redesign with the user in mind - not the designer
TomTom Via 225 review – Tom Tom via 225 is a good size GPS unit that does a reasonable job of getting us to our location. I use it regularly for work and seems to work well. I have had problems with lifetime maps needing renewal and I find the unit is difficult to type locations into. Australian voice, over speed alert, lifetime maps Lifetime maps have run out after 6… Read more · 1

Good Quality, Basic GPS – Accurate and easy to operate 5" in car GPS system. Spoken street names work well. TomTom is currently offering free lifetime map update which is a real bonus, though I haven't updated the maps so therefore I can't comment on this feature. 280 except for no Bluetooth connectivity and no"Speak and Go" which allows you to control your device with just the sound of your voice, if you don't need these features the Tomtom VIA 225 maybe exactly what you need.
I have tested this GPS on routes that I'm familiar with and it has so far always selected the most obvious and direct route, so far it has yet to guide me on a route that seemed, well stupid!!
The screen size is perfect for typing in destinations and the screen display is easy to see when it's sunny.
Online registration for free map updates was a little frustrating and fiddly, but in the end I got it working.
This is a basic GPS system, but what its designed to do, it does well.
March 2013 issue of Choice Magazine rated the Tomtom VIA 260 & 280 equal first in a detailed review, the Tomtom VIA 225 was not included in the review but as stated above this GPS is identical to the VIA 280 minus a couple of features which I didn't need, as I trust Choice magazine this is what influenced me to buy this model GPS. Accurate, easy to use, free lifetime map updates, good screen display Frustrating online registration
