Please be aware that as of 2nd of December 2020 a number of Toyota Hilux Diesel vehicles are being recalled due to a brake booster issue.
I read negative reviews here I think people do not understand the Ute is a lite work Ute I have the 2018 2.7 petrol single cab manual with a canopy on it have had it from new still getting 10.5 per 100 for the price you pay for it it’s a great Ute I don’t tow st^pid hi weight trailers behind it’s comfortable with about 1.2 ton trailer. It’s sits nicely on the hwy at 110 km and for resale it’s better than the 4x4 uts Show details
Not fit for purpose of hard working Tradie – Im a Plumber. Comfortable. Nice aircon Good steering lock. Nice electrics. Thirsty as my 1993 landcruiser diesel Rear suspension absolute rubbish. It sags so much Its dangerous to get the trailer on and off. I have to use the jack. The springs aren't fit for tradie purpose. Sat nav Jumps from 6th gear to 4th at slightest hint of a hill. Workmate – 2018 workmate 2.7 pertrol automatic , 2WD. Auto gearbox over revs and sticks in top gear and takes too long to change itself back down. Towing a medium sized 2 ton trailer , i average 25- 30 litres per 100km, no trailer 10-13L using 98 unleaded. Has let me down but Couple of times wouldn’t start for some reason ? Wound over but not start.… Read more
Eventually get it going , put foot flat to floor while cranking and comes to life. Update- factory recall done on fuel pump replacement inside tank. Hasnt played up since being replaced.
I use it for medium duty work and towing a 2 ton trailer occasionally on highways but dont flog it . Nice and easy to drive and i find it reasonably comfy for long day drives. I carry extra weight in tray to reduce the bumpyness of it when tray is empty. The headlights are excellent at night , no need for spot lights as factory lights are bright enough on high beam. 2.6m factory tray is handy at times and has removable sides. I think they are over priced for what they are but all Toyoto’s commercials are expensive compared to the other brands. Overall im happy with it despite the issues.
This is the worse vehicle I have ever had and it’s a lemon. Would never buy another Toyota – Where do I start….. we had to get the seat cover replaced for the drivers seat as it started tearing after 6 months ….we bought the car new and had all the services done by Toyota. We told the supervisor of the service section who is the Main Mechanic at Windsor Gardens SA branch that the car revs high and takes a very longgggg time to change into… Read more
top gear they even went for a drive with us so we could explain and show them and they saw there was a problem…. Their fix was oh we got another workmate ute to do the same thing…. not normal and didn’t want to help us as this is not normal speaking to many other mechanics. We have had continual conversations with them about the high rev and not changing gears, still not wanting to help or do anything about it. About a week ago we had the smell of burning electrical wire smell and then some haze smoke to which a week later after this occurred a few times during the week the whole display/radio screen system crashed and no longer works to their reply oh we’ve never hd this happen before and it will take 4-6 weeks. So I have no radio or reverse camera for all this time whilst I wait for a replacement. If there was a site for lemon cars this one would be on top.
2022 hilux single cab 2.7 – Was given this Ute as a company work vehicle. It currently has 29000 ks on it. The fella that had it before me towed a single axle trailer with it. His fuel consumption was between 14.5 and 17 litres per hundred ks. I have had the Ute for 6000 ks and also tow a trailer for work. I don’t put the Ute hard and with the trailer I always manage… Read more
11.5 and 13 litres per 100ks. Just depends on the terrain. When the Ute is unlaiden and no trailer, I get between 9.5 and 10.5 litres Per 100ks. That is a mixture of hiway and town work. My latest fuel up was 392 ks for 37.2 litres. I find the Ute comfortable, quiet, easy to get in and out of. The only thing I am not really keen on is the auto tends to hold onto the lower gears if there are any hills about. Apart from that I think they are a great Ute. This one is the third petrol hilux I have had and by far the best yet, especially on the fuel consumption.
Excellent so far 2018 2.7 Auto – Purchased my 2018 used (60,000 klms) from a dealer. Had it for 12mnths now. I tow a 17ft caravan and have had no issues with the engine or auto. The petrol engine has plenty of grunt for a heavy, solid Ute. The best thing is it's so easy to DIY service. Show details
2017 single cab Toyota Hilux workmate – This ute looks great and handles ok. But as for the fuel economy it is a peice of crap. I drove to Canberra from Young and back which is about 360 KMs in total and it cost me around $75 - $80 return. For a 4 cylinder vehicle you should be doing that distance for around $38 - $40 return. We have another Toyota corolla and you couldn't find a better… Read more
car as the fuel economy goes. As far as the Toyota Hilux workmate goes I will never buy another one of these. They are rubbish. If I had of known that they were so heavy on fuel I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. And as for Toyota lying about the fuel economy per tank they should be made to take theses vehicles of the market until they can fix the problem with the fuel economy.
VERY BAD FUEL ECONOMY – Only got this a few days ago and have already used a 1/4 of a tank for 100km traveled, freeway and suburbs (No traffic and not pushing it hard at all) . Thats a whopping 19km per 100km. Absoloutely disgusting especially when Toytoa say you should get around 10km per 100L. And this is for the 4 cylynder with NO load on the back. Just the tray.… Read more
This is my first ever Toyota and if the fuel economy stays like this it will be my last.
Auto transmission seems to be a bit all over the place as well.
The fuel consumption is really bad – I bought a brand new Hilux 2.7 petrol 2022. I fit a full-size canopy on the back of the tray. I've been able to Only Drive 350 kilometers with one full tank of around 60 liters. I went to Toyota and I said to them your car has faulty but they said because of the canopy your fuel consumption jumped higher. Before I decided to buy this car I check… Read more
the specification and it said an average of 9.8L to 11.8L per 100 kilometers. The reality was over 16L per 100 kilometers. I sold my car straight away.
Not such a great work ute – Work ute for trady to carry tools and parts from base to work sites. This ute is used 5 days a week traveling aprox 120 kms per day. My company purchased the car in April this year brand new so it has only had its complementary service so far. We will have it serviced as per log book. The driver noted that the hand brake warning alarm sounds… Read more
regularly as the zipped fabric cover on the base of the handbrake holds the leaver up a little so it does not disengage the alarm. The gear box is clunky between gears, and the motor very thirsty.
2019 work mate ute – Hi all 4x2 work mate owners as a lot know it’s bumpy as it is a work horse, thinking of changing seats putting rav4 or something similar what do people think, and the reason for this is I do long drives and back problems, would like to hear peoples feed back please Show details
2021 Workmate, single cab – I agree pretty much with what JohnB wrote. Just returned from a trip to Canberra back to the Shoalhaven. Went via the Hume Hwy. This is the first long trip I have done in this car. Very unimpressed with the auto gearbox. The thing has no idea what it’s doing. Fuel consumption woeful. And as for traction, it was raining when we left Nowra and going… Read more
up the mountain roads was a real experience. Had to be very careful not to loose it on steep grades and hair pin bends. Was actually a bit better coming down. I’ll just have to learn to live with this car. It is a second car and won’t get a lot of work and won’t be doing a lot of long distance driving. So for that reason I’ll most likely be able to live with it. And also no INTERMITTENT WIPERS!!!
Worst value car I ever had – This vehicle is a work car, there was no ability to select anything, except for tow bar, etc. I got this vehicle new. Before the end of the first tank of fuel., I saw random failures of every electronic aid, ie Emergency Brake Assist, Lane Change, Anti Lock Brakes system failure, please visit the dealer. etc. Then one day, every system failed.… Read more
It turned off the car to reset and then kept going. The dealer could find no errors logged and no issues with the car, in other words, they did a software fix and elected not to say anything.
Firstly, if you buy the petrol new there are some things to understand. 1. The engine probably has a wear-in algorithm. For the first 1k, the car performance is woeful. For the next 10k, the performance is slightly better. After that, I am at 35k, the performance is better, not because it approaches reasonable. But because you have such low values to start with, that any improvement is welcomed. 2. This car can theoretically tow 2800kg with 1000kg in the car. I have only done 1000kg all up and the car was always searching for a lower gear. I plan to test the full load, I have a lot of patience and will definitely need it. 3. While this is a work car and cost is not important, this is still a $40k vehicle, that comes standard without intermittent wipers. Yes, you read correctly. My previous personal car was a Kia Sportage Platinum Diesel, bought new, same price point. after 300k on the clock, didn't miss a beat, heaps of torque, great fuel economy (6L/100k), it had everything including intermittent wipers. 4. While the complete lack of power is one thing (one passenger, 100kg in the tray at most). The fuel economy is woeful (the best = 10.3/100k). I have towed with this and seeing 15-20l/100k is to be expected. The car drives in a reasonable manner, but it is dangerous in the wet. Unless you have 500kg in the tray or 4 people in the cab, the car has very little traction. Sure the tires might last indefinitely, but that doesn't help when you have plowed thru a corner because of a lack of traction. On my paving stone driveway which has a slight incline, I got bogged. Yes. there was a very small pile of dirt the car had to navigate. That was clearly well beyond its capabilities. 5. The car has lane change warning, DON'T use it. On most roads, the car bounces from left lane marker to right and back again. 6. If you manage to put a load in the boot/tray. The car wallows around corners like a drunk sailor on a small boat in a storm. 6. The car is impressively quiet on the highway. 7. Is it reliable, too early to tell. It would want to be, because I am paying at least $2-3k more per year in fuel than I should. Over a 10year period, that's a brand new car.
My wifes car is a Mazda SP25, it has better get up and go, better economy, better handling, intermittent wipers and was $15k less. Yes, I know that are different styles of car, but a steel box on the back doesn't cost $15k.
The moral of the story is if you want a good car don't buy this. If you need to take 4 people and a tonne in the back. Buy a diesel Sportage or Tucson and a custom trailer.

Good, reliable ute – I bought the last one of these (2021 model) on the lot for $31,000 with the 2.6m tray, if I missed it I would have had to wait until the next shipment in October to get one. So that tells you how sought after they are! At the end of the day it's a tradies ute, but they have modernised the interior and safety to meet expectations. It has more… Read more
safety tech in it than my wife's 2018 Vitara and I reckon the dash and instruments look unreal. It's handy how it reads the street signs an posts the speed limit on the dash. I've not yet done 1000km in it but early first impressions are positive. My only criticisms are the 2.7lt engine, though it will run trouble free for 400,000km it is under-powered for the application. It over-revs and is thirsty as a result. The other thing is I don't think they've gotten the suspension balance right, it’s very aggressive. You can't put a coffee in the console and expect it not to spill even on roads around town. I understand it's built to handle carrying a tonne, but how many people drive around daily with a tonne in the back? I think a set of extractors and some softer shocks in the back might fix both issues. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to that Toyota trouble free motoring.
Design faults and problems – Design of the seat and steering column/ wheel means that people with large thighs struggle to get in ad out of the car as you get stuck getting in and out. Steering column has limited height adjustment as does the car seat. Further seats do not fold forward to place tools etc behind. Would not recommend for larger built people. Show details
Solid, Dependable Workhorse – I traded in a nine year old 4x4 hilux and purchased the petrol automatic version of the Workmate. I was pleasantly surprised by the high level of safety equipment and solid build. It is great to drive and has superior sound deadening to my previous hilux. I have found the petrol consumption high, consistently over 11 litres per 100km compared to… Read more
my previous diesel version of around 8l per 100km. That said it is slightly cheaper to service and for the price quite a bargain. I added a nudge bar, reversing camera, metallic paint, tow bar and upgraded steel tray for a total under $25k drive away. I miss not having a 4x4 and now rely on a Ford Ranger if the ground on the farm is too wet. However my purchase was price driven and I haven't been disappointed.
Excellent driver – Bought this 2018 Hilux 3 weeks ago and must say very impressed with how it drives and the features included for a basic workmate ute. Very smooth and comfortable daily driver. Show details
Great work horse, not a problem! – So reliable 1984 model was voted most reliable car ever. Love my luxey. Have a workmate 4+2 man and tows so easily put near 1 tonne in it every day handles so well. had a triton and hated it didn’t tow well or handle weight. Hilux is total opposite. Not regretting for buying a Hilux – Bought 2018 Workmate double cab 2.7 l petrol as a new car. Done close to 500 km now. Good side: 1. Surprisingly quiet cabin when driving at 60 kph as a Ute. 2. Simple to operate, basic functions just fine to me. 3. If not looking back, I would feel like driving a SUV. Not so good side: 1. When Rev up, it’s bit noisy. But at 60kph speed, rev… Read more
is down about 1300 rpm, very quiet driving. 2. On highway cruising at 100kph, rev is at 1900 rpm, feel the rear wheel drive bit noisy. But I suppose I am comparing with my old Territory.
Few feed back:
1. I found Eco mode is useless, I use Power mode all the time that is more responsive.
2. Tyre pressure: book suggests 35 psi front, 42 psi rear. I tried on highway with empty tray, too hard to my brain. I changed to 34 front, 38 rear, feel just right around city trips.
Wow, very bumpy! – With no load in the back, the drive is just terrible. My brain is being smashed against my skull in a most aggressive manner, over roads that I know are smooth. You can feel every tiny crack, bump or crevice in the road. I have asked if there is any suspension adjustments that can be done, but it seems not (any suggestions, apart from filling the… Read more
tray with concrete?) Under load, it's great and it was a bargain (only $22,000 new 2018). There is almost no space to put shopping or tools in the cab - minimal space behind the seats. Another small thing - the seatbelt is always annoying my neck like it's designed for a very tall person. I'm an average height, so I don't understand why.
Poor – Poor fuel economy that Toyota are aware of and have done nothing about. Only ever run 98 ron petrol in it and hasn't done any work. Stock as with alloy tray and only used to commute to work. Only get 450km per 80 litre tank. 90% of my driving is highway. The ride is shocking. Radio is useless and doesn't pick up stations even in the city. … Read more

New Hilux rust in chassis after 2 years and 15,000 kms only – I puchased a new Hilux single cab in October 2015 and it now has extensive rust in the chassis due to the fact according to the Corrosion report that I had done that the chassis and running gear eg tailshaft, diff housing etc has not been painted properly in the factory when the car was made in Sept 2015. The paint on the chassis is only 30… Read more
micron,s thick and that is only where it has been painted.
The vehicle is still under warranty and has been back to the dealer and their reply to the rust problems was that is eviromental and is due to where the vehicle is garaged and my warranty claim has been refused.
I had my last Hilux at the same address for over 20 years with no rust problems.Current vehicle is always parked under cover the same as my last one.
My new Hiux is washed down and polished regulary and has never been used for work and has never been on a dirt road.It is a 2 wheel drive auto so has never been on a beach or in the bush.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has heard of these problems with the current Hiluxes.
Great car – Purchased brand new Toyota Hilux workmate utility with tray. Great vehicle runs really well, very reliable and very fuel efficient. Use this on our hobby farm around the paddocks and bush tracks and covers terrain really well. Also handles well on the road. Comfortable interior making it good for long trips. Show details
Fantastic – Excellent driving experience, easy to clean interior, very reliable and economical. Washed it once when it gets serviced they wash it at Toyota Springwood. Good but no guts – We find our Toyota hilux to be quite and smooth ride around town and on long trips, it gets decent mileage and seems reliable enough. Lots of room in the cabin except the is not much head room in the back seat which can cause for a need for more breaks so the back passengers can stretch. Show details
My 2017 Toyota Hilux Automatic Workmate is fine - but the expensive Toyota extras??? – In October this year I updated my 2014 Toyota Hilux Automatic Workmate to the brand new 2017 model. comprehensive with a larger touch screen that can show additional features regarding the vehicle's performance. The air conditioning system works very well as it only has a relatively small cabin to cool.
Overall is is a slightly larger, heavier vehicle than the 2014 model.
The 2.7 L petrol engine is the same but now with 6 speed automatic. Moving off from the lights the Hilux Workmate keeps pace with the traffic and accelerates smoothly.
Over time petrol consumption will undoubtedly improve as it has only travelled a few hundred kilometres so far.
Without a load in the tray the Hilux manages to find every bump on the local roads but on better surfaced main roads the ride quality is quite reasonable. Once the tray is loaded of course it has much better on road manners.
As an additional safety measure I had a rear vision camera fitted by the Toyota Dealership but then was extremely disappointed to find it shows me an enlarged picture of what is behind the tray but no indication of distance - no bars shown by the camera - the indication of distance was something I was already accustomed to in 2 previous vehicles.
Audio reverse sensors fitted also were inadequate - not sounding any warning of an object behind the tray until it is within an extremely short distance.
Both expensive extras - working - but not as well as anticipated.
There are other similar products on the market but both of these were supplied & fitted by the Toyota Dealership & I would have thought would be better than they actually have proven to be.
New Workmate has become civilised – The 2017 Hilux Workmate has changed and has become more civil on the interior. about time, Power windows, new steering wheel with controls for blue tooth, Radio and other technology. Build quality is tough if not better and ride is not as harsh as previous generations. The shift feel on the manual gearbox is good with a shorter shifter and a light clutch. The engine is quieter and not as thirsty as previous. The seating to me seemed higher than before with more seat bolster but it does the job with legroom being just enough for taller persons like myself. Terrific trade ute with affordable servicing capped and Toyota Reliability. Oh and it now has daytime running light's
Good solid performer – Ride is a bit rough as it needs some weight on tray. The tool boxes with tools will solve yhis plus some time to soften suspension. Good interior however as it is tradie car could do with less material inserts. Totally reliable, a bit heavy on fuel. Definitely need a rear camera installed for reversing in tight spots.
