Never again – Like the lay out of this side by side fridge freezer however we too have that black goo oozing out of our fridge. If we don’t keep it wiped off it sticks to the seals which will break them eventually. The only thing we found that will dissolve the goo and clean it of is kerosene. Not happy and would never purchase again. Show details
Door issues – Same problem as articulated by [Name Removed] from Sydney. I recently noticed that the fridge side door was no longer square to the fridge and the bottom part of the door was projecting out, such that the seal was no longer making contact. The hinge mechanism on the door is plastic. This plastic has collapsed into the door and the door is no… Read more
longer square around the hinge. The action of opening and closing the door has further worn down the door and hinge, worsening the problem. A real shame since we've had no other issues with this fridge and certainly no "black ooze" issues as others have described.
EDIT - Contacted Westinghouse. Was offered a solution that involves buying the hinge mechanism and a new door set (have to buy both for colour matching apparently). All up the cost was close to $1000. Why would I spend that when I don't know when the new hinge/door setup will fail again due to poor design?
Black tar – This fridge freezer is fine apart from the black tar forming on the seals had it fixed under warranty but it is back again even worse so obviously was not fixed correctly if they can't fix it they should replace it Show details

Great capacity for it's size but the tar isn't great – We've had this fridge for nearly 10years now and I love the capacity, it has always been so handy for parties and holding all of our food and produce! Never had an issue with the drawers or shelves. I love the fact it was built in Australia. In saying that, we HAVE had an issue with the black tar for close to 8 years I'd say, I never knew it was… Read more
such a common problem! The freezer compartment doesn't seal, the tar is so sticky it has ripped the seal off from the door and frozen things keep melting. I'm at a point now where I want to replace the fridge, however there is nothing like it on the market. Our cavity is specifically built for this fridge and there is no fridge that has a 700L capacity that will fit.
I came across this page as I was looking to see if I could just buy a replacement, but after all the issues everyone has had with Westinghouse (and I've experienced similar with my Westinghouse cooker - being repaired and replace multiple times) I'm not sure I want to continue supporting this brand.

Black goo oozing from bottom of fridge and freezer doors – After reading the reviews on this forum I contacted Electrolux with my issue. They contacted me the next working day and arranged for a technician to come out at no cost. The technician came out, cleaned the goo and siliconed it. He advised me to ensure the vents at the back inside the fridge and freezer had free air flow as that makes the fridge… Read more
work extra hard to keep it cool hence the black goo. I moved all the stuff away from the vents and the fridge is working much better and seems quieter. I love this fridge so didn’t want to have to look for another option. Excellent service from Electrolux.
Nearly 10 years and going strong – I appreciate all the people that had an issue with this fridge. Mine has been working (knock on wood) perfectly. It is a great size and keeps the right temperature. I am moving again and thought of selling but it is so good. SOrry others hada bad experience Show details
7 years old and very happy still – I replaced a Westinghouse all fridge unit. It was about 22 years old and still worked fine, but I wanted a fridge freezer to fill the space. We haven’t had any problems in 7 years with this model. Like all electrical products, it doesn’t matter which brand, or how much you pay, there is a chance you will get a lemon. The only thing that separates them, is the customer care, should you need it. Show details

How to (partly) solve the problem – I've had the same problems as anyone else. Black goo oozes from the joints at the bottom and ruins the seals. Westinghouse originally took it away to fix the problem but it soon returned. It's a design fault and they should replace all units with a different model free of charge. However, I had the seals replaced by a third party for $200. And he… Read more
recommended using a smear of vaseline on the seals to help protect them. I had tried everything to clean the gunk off - soap, solvent, WD40, alcohol, domestic cleaners, you name it - nothing worked. But...vaseline seems to disolve the stuff.
So now I clean the crap off every few weeks as it builds up and before it becomes a problem, and the seals are holding up just great. OK, I shouldn't have to be doing this, but if you want to prolong the life of the fridge, then keep a tub of vaseline handy together with a sponge/scourer and you'll be ok.
Black tar like goo leaking at bottom seal – Have had this issue for the last few years and have just persevered and cleaned it - it's been a reliable fridge thats well laid out, purchased in 2013. However really disappointed in the continuous black goo build up around the bottom seals. I'm over cleaning them up and it's now affecting the seals. Disappointing and won't purchase another Westinghouse product again. Show details

A nicely arranged fridge with APPALLING DESIGN & BUILD FLAWS – I just had local service people out to deal with both the seals and the failing freezer (9 years old); they told me that there are no parts to replace the door seals and you have to get special people out to 'form' the seal on site! Further more - before I had the information on who these specialists were - was later told that the evaporator had… Read more
failed as a result of the original design flaw in the fridge. Apparently, approx, five times too much black 'mastic' (sealant) is filled into the cavity between the compartments, causing a cyclical problem where the one issue exacerbates the other. Oh yes, and apparently the evaporator and it's associated parts can't be practically replaced anymore. Westinghouse Customer ‘Care’ have tried to defend their poor product & absence of parts, by calling it “obsolete” yet it was still being sold 4 years ago!! I AWAIT A FURTHER RESPONSE from Westinghouse but if I have no luck, it will be another of these appalling fridges rendered useless after only a few years, requiring not only removalist fees, tip fees and a refrigerant removal (degassing) fee. CLEARLY, the fridge is not fit for purpose and hasn’t fulfilled an average person’s expectation for the natural working life of a quality fridge, as described under Australian consumer law. As it’s a DESIGN FLAW, and failed through no fault of the owner, it should be replaced in good faith by Electrolux.

black goo, so over it – black goo, so over it, anyone have an idea, besides constantly cleaning it off? We all as Aussies grew up with Westinghouse or Pope refrigeration, our parents and grandparents had the same appliances since day dot. Now everything is disposable, what is happening in this world now designed for us to live in. Teach your children/grandchildren to stay clear of Westinghouse, let this company be destroyed by their negligence Show details

Poor fridge. Would not buy again – We bought a Westinghouse wse7000sf 9 years ago. In 2018 just inside the extended warranty period from Harvey Norman it exhibited what seems to be a common problem of leaking black goo. We got the Westinghouse repair guy in after I posted a review here and he essentially "fixed" it by covering the area with white caulk/sealant which didn't help… Read more
with keeping it clean. I've now noticed fine cracks all over the plastic interior, these are not from putting heavy items on the plastic or in the fridge as they are all up the sides and black, including where the temperature unit is. (The plastic on one of the fridge shelves has also cracked - not a stress crack but just one that seems to be caused by expansion/contraction.) The fridge has always been extremely hot in the central column area. I've never seen this in a fridge before and am now anxious that there could be leaks into the fridge from any coolants inside it. Wondering if it was caused by the "fix" which might have interfered with cooling? Not happy at all. Reading other reviews it seems to be a model with multiple problems even though it was an expensive fridge. So much for Westinghouse quality.
Multiple issues bought new for young family – First issue was the heat of the dividing panel. I’m unable to remember how this was rectified. Second issue was the failed cooling fan at the bottom of the fridge. Caused the drip tray under the fridge to over flow and had water everywhere. A local repairer fixed this at our expense at about the 4 year mark. Third issue is the control panel… Read more
isn’t working and there are no cooling functions just the freezer light comes on. Had an almighty mess to clean that afternoon.
Is the control panel issue a simple plug n play swap out or is it a more costly repair? We’re at breaking point with this fridge, using a chest freezer and 12v fridge at the moment.
Thanks
Adam

Quick google to find out what black goo is from fridge – I have been getting a black goo almost like tar leak out of our fridge a quick google brought me here and it seems like a common complaint. The fridge also seems tro get quite hot where the frame is. ** UPDATE. Westinghouse sent someone to seal it and it went away, but it’s back again. A known issue they just seem to want to go away. Also the section between fridge and freezer gets exceptionally hot. Show details

Poor quality fridge – This fridge has been a nightmare since the beginning. 3 times it has stopped working on me. Sadly another black goo review – Our beautiful fridge/freezer has black tar stuff at the bottom of both doors on the seals. Very disappointing as this fridge has been kept in immaculate condition. Black sealant – Black sealant discharging from the bottom inner corners of the fridge doors. This has been happening for a couple of years . that old. Was told by Westinghouse not their problem. Would I buy another ? No maybe Samsung or lg. Something needs to be done as it seems this is a well known problem. Recall. I have a Avanti race push bike 2014 model they put out a world wide recall and will replace the bike with a new frame. So why can’t a fridge get the same treatment. Still cost over 2000 dollars. I’ll wait with baited breath for a positive response.
Black ooze – Like others with this fridge, we have had black goo oozing for quite a while now at the base of both the doors. I am very disappointed as the brand was recommended to me by the shop we purchased it at - I have also had a disappointing run with another Westinghouse appliance bought at the same time.

Westinghouse is a hopelessly rubbish company - Stay away - Broken Door Hinge – We've had this fridge for some time now and it has been suitable. inspection of the hinge showed that the hinge mechanism on the door is plastic. This plastic has collapsed into the door and the door is no longer square around the hinge. The action of opening and closing the door has further worn down the door and hinge, worsening the problem.
I have called Electrolux to find out the cost and availability of a replacement door (the hinge mechanism on the door is formed as part of the door and looks like it cannot be replaced and it appears that complete door replacement is the common fix) and was advised that this door was no longer available.
I was advised that I should call around various repair shops to see if they might have a door or know where to find one.
All I can say is that this will be the last Westinghouse product I ever buy (Including all other Electrolux Products). I shall also be advising everyone I know to do avoid these rubbish products.
How hopeless do you need to be do design products so poorly ? I can only imagine the shame that George Westinghouse would feel if he was alive today to see how his name was being tarnished by poor quality engineering of the company that bares his name.
Considering this is a common problem for this fridge, there should have been a recall for everyone made to address this issue. But because we live in a society where consumer rights have been eroded, we are just expected to cop it and be happy.
What a hopeless company. Either fix your designs or close your doors.
