Yamaha FZ1S

Excellent all rounder! – Purchased as an off the floor demo from Joes in Canberra. I was trading up from a GSXR750 and wanted something with better comfort for longer trips. My first impression on the test ride was to buy immediately, based on the upright position and plenty of torque which made for better riding on the public roads. Have had the bike for 7 years now… Read more
and every time I think about trading it, I look around and can't find anything from the new crop of bikes that would do most things as well as the FZ1. Its comfy - i've done 12 hour days on it without being in total agony, plenty of usable power for the public roads and have done a few track days on it also.
Only as I have improved my riding level have I found out the limits of the stock suspension. (which admittedly, hasn't been setup for my weight). If I don't trade it, that'll be my next thing to look at. The only thing I'd wish for otherwise would have been a factory hard luggage option.
Being a typical Japanese built bike, i've had almost zero issues except for a side-stand switch coming unplugged from a loom. That caused the bike to cut out inconsistently, but was easily fixed.
Better than expected – I have owned my 2006 FZ1 since 2009. I'm a 'dried in the wool' Honda fan but the big Yamaha has captured my heart. Great all-rounder, plenty of power (ECU de-restricted) and handling to match. It has a Yamaha after market exhaust, but apart from that and the ECU change is mostly stock. Seat very uncomfortable, however. I think this is more to… Read more
do with the seat, foot-peg, handlebar relationship rather than the seat itself. I have improved the situation immensely by adding a small blow up cushion and a sheepskin when doing long distance. I have managed a non-stop ride from Phillip Island to Sydney (apart from the obligatory fuel and food stops) with only minor discomfort about 2 hours out of Sydney. By the way, after the ECU de-restriction, the fuel economy improved markedly. Going from max 275km to empty to max 375km to empty. Not sure what they did but it really made a big difference. The bike has been totally reliable with only regular oil changes and general regular maintenance to date. I have been riding for over 50 years, owned heaps and heaps of bikes but I am genuinely impressed with this bike. I would highly recommend it to my fellow motorcyclists as a ride to have if you are finding a pure sports bike a bit too uncomfortable, riding stance wise as the Yamaha is a bit more upright.
FZ1N – Best bike I've owned. I've had everything from dirt bikes to R1's and this particular bike in terms of all round sports fun is hands down the best. the engine has great characteristics and with a few little aftermarket bits and pieces it can look really quite tough. Very fast practical sports bike. Show details
Yamaha does it again and again – FZ1S take Yamaha's award winning R1 engine and stick it in an all purpose frame and you end up with the quintessential Yamaha sports tourer. No other Japanese bike manufacturer is as high tech or advanced as Yamaha, the FZ1S takes the R1's superb power plant and packs it in an urban missle. Brakes, handling, and comfort combined with a level of… Read more
reliability that only Japanese bikes can deliver. Nothing more than you need, a no nonsense bike. I've owned two of these praise worthy machines, since the first to the last which was traded on an R1 2015 model. I'd have to be honest and say the R1 though faster and highly manoeuvrble, lacked the user friendliness of the FZ1S.
Excellent – I love this bike and riding to and from work is often the best part of my day! The great engine, super handling and grunty good looks all make it a winner. What a great bike this is! I have the partly faired version (FZ1S). Perhaps the first surprise is how docile the bike can be for riding in traffic, just easy to ride and no worries about… Read more
excessive power. But it (the power) is all there when you have some room. The engine is great with a smooth increase in power as the throttle is opened. Handling is also great, it is easy to turn into corners, it sticks like glue and the suspension works so well that bumps/holes etc in the way don't unsettle turning at all. The riding position is comfortable, the bars are in the right place, the speedo/tacho easy to see and the short screen provides surprisingly good wind protection. 1. The stock seat is a shocker (this seems to be a Yamaha speciality): it is hard and slopes forward pushing you into the tank, especially when braking. I got a new seat from Top Sellerie (France) which is just about perfect. Good for the pillion, too.
2. Fuel economy/fuel tank size. The fuel tank is 18L and when trying really hard to be economical the best I can get is about 5 L/100 km, which gives a maximum range a little over 300 km.
Good – This bike will suit riders like myself who want a bike that is not too heavy, 199kg, but has the power to have some serious fun when the urge gets hold of you. I find that the more upright riding position suits me much better than a full supersport bike, (must be getting old), the extra control and confidence offered buy the wider bars is a bonus.… Read more
Just an enjoyable easy to ride motorcycle, with a dose of hooligan thrown in. Great bike to ride, light steering, very good handling, nice riding position - good for taller riders, top end power is a real buzz, brakes are excellent - plenty of stopping power with great feel. Able to be putted around town with ease. Usual good Yammy standard of finish and reliability. Good all round bike with the bonus of being able to have alot of fun in the twisties. Seat needs a sheep skin or gel seat
Good – I have been a Honda fan most of my life however I am a convert now Well done Yamaha, well finished and plenty of power for the novice to a hardened Road rider Stepping from riding dirt bikes to my first road bike was a culture change for me. I purchased my FZ1 after reading a product booklet, I didn't even test ride the bike, I thought what the… Read more
hell I have to learn to ride road anyway!
What a joy to ride, the mid range power grows on you like a rash, I love all the R1 running gear, handling is fantastic and stopping is spot on.
The more I ride, the more I want to ride it. A little heavy at slow speed (no suprises there) and after about 200 kms it's time to get off and give the bum a break
A Gel seat would be great on the next model
