brush the metal shaft to remove the rust. Outside, every 6 months or so spray the neoprene cogs and the metal shaft with a silicone spray. I haven't had a problem since. Use a spray tube extension 'straw' to spray past the foot pedal and get the cogs and shaft and you won't need to take the base off. Make sure to spray the metal shaft Don't use wd40 or the like. After spraying turn the bucket upside down to let the lubricant run along the metal.

"damp mop", we ended up with water all over the floor and I had to get down on all fours with towels to dry out the tiles so they could be walked on. The supplied bucket is another waste of time as it leaves the mop dripping water. As for the design of the mop itself, well, I was reduced to short strokes of about 18 inches so as to not scrape the plastic head on the floor. Very frustrating to attempt to use.
