Great for the price, hard for parts – I'll give you all the positive info first, scroll to the end for negative feedback. I bought my FWD 2016 model in 2023. Second owner since new. Manual 2.2L turbo diesel. with 53,000km for $11500 which is a steal. Currently have 73,000km on clock so done 20,000km in a year. Bonnet and roof needed a clear coat respray which I did myself. I'm 6ft9… Read more

and this car easily accommodates me in 5 seats and at a push in the 3rd row too. Its engine is slow to get going but by third gear a smile develops on your face. Having 6 manual gears allows for so much crusin. Overtaking at speed is a breeze. Towing capacity is 160kg on the ball and 2.5T braked. Ive towed 2.3T no problems for 2600km straight. Excellent climate controlled Aircon to all 3 rows is fantastic and the 3rd row have their own controls. Cig sockets to all three rows for device charging. Interior space is massive and in the driver's seat you have multiple adjustment with a feel like you are sitting on rather than in the car. Front seats don't hug your bum and lower back as are flat so you'll need to buy something to mitigate this. Leather seats are great but in a hot and humid Qld we've put 70mm pile sheepskin over them. Dark dash makes the car hotter so put a dash mat over it. The interior ambient lights are really nice as they light up floors, door cards, ignition and roof and can stay on during travel. The interior map lights to front are very bright as are the rear passenger roof lights (ALL LEDS). Seats are easily folded and can be removed altogether quite easily. Interior boot and fuel release emergency tabs are great. Tinting to windows from factory isn't great but does the job. Suspension is okay but road noise enters the cabin so play some music and it disappears. Headlights aren't the brightest but the stunning parker lights which can be used during the day are amazing and auto lighting is standard. Overall a good looking car with a bullet proof engine that sips the diesel. Maintenance is obviously key. Ide buy another one again but this time in auto AWD. 4 wheel disc brakes are game changing especially for towing. To keep costs down do the oil and filter changes yourself on minor services.

NEGATIVES: *Headlights yellow over time and are extremely expensive to replace ($800+ each) so rub them back with 800 grit then 1500 grit (wet) then spray with 2K max clear. *When the clutch kit needs replacing it'll be very expensive because they also replace the concentric slave cylinder and dual mass flywheels so expect $5000+ *Steering column was poorly designed and sits right next to your shoe and toes *Flat seat bases give little to no support *Plastics feel cheap *GPS is useless, use Google maps on your phone instead *Without the firmware update the infotainment system will give you multiple issues (can be fixed by a Mahindra dealer) *Parts are very hard to get to replace even standard service items but eBay stock the after market filter kits and I've bought many things from India direct on eBay or through Mahindra parts stockists in Oz. *Front Doors need to be closed hard otherwise they stay open *Rear mirror-the plastic receiver holding the ball of the mirror cracks easily *Puddle lights under doors fall out however I've been able to drill a hole and screw them in to the door *RUST..... Definitely check this regularly as these cars are prone to it *Annoying rattles that can't be fixed *Key fob...can only be replaced by Mahindra and it's not cheap

Nice looking car but hard to get parts for & hard to find a mechanic to work on it cos of the problems getting parts!! – I got this car because I liked the look of it & it said on redbook that it has a fuel economy of only 6.8 per 100kms but so far the best I can get is 10.5 per 100kms & had little problem getting parts for it because all I need is radiator hose & iv tried ordering it & for last 3weeks they keep saying they are doing stocktake!! Can't get this… Read more

$13.25 part anywhere & 2 clamps $2.50ea anywhere!!! Crazy for no one to stock Mahindra parts... not supercheap or repco or anyone!!! So can't use the car because mechanic won't work on it because of parts being hard to get & all I keep getting told is that it will be another 3weeks!!! Can't believe that $20 in parts takes so long to get & how long does it take to do stocktake!!! Apart from parts problems the car itself is nice to drive & good looking but Mahindra need to make parts easier to get even if they do them on ebay or anywhere cos iv tried everything & still can't get what I need!!!

A good car. As good as any in it's category – I currently own 2018 XUV500 W8 petrol AWD automatic. Previously owned Kluger, X-Trail - XUV is just as good as any of them . Drives well as any of the cars mentioned. XUV Doesn't feel bulky or cumbersome as the other previous cars. interior is roomy. There is bit of grunt while starting, quiet on cruise. Very economical. Highly recommended.  Show details

Love the look and power. To much weak, rattling plastic – Just done 32,000kms now. Ok ill start with the good - It looks good and has plenty of power, good on fuel, even though not as good as the literature states, Has 7 seats 5 good size adults and 2 older children fit comfortably. With the addition of a few things, this early 2014 made 2015 model would be great. The semi bad to bad- Its very bumpy, you… Read more ·  2

feel everything, even the smallest imperfections in a road make the ride terrible. needs airbag suspension added. The seats look great, but its no good if you cant get comfortable as the driver. I just cant get the seat right, theres no tilt for the front or rear of the seat base, just up and down (which tore the drivers seat on the 1st use). Its in desperate need of a hud (head up display) If you lift the seat to far, you cant see the speedometer, if you adjust the steering wheel to far you block the view of the speedo. Simple plug-in hud fixes the problem. Also doesnt have the normal odometer that has the simple easy to use reset, for when we refill the tank. The best it has is a km left until you have to refill, based on how you have been driving (i assume) which is a menu on the stereo. So not something you can see where it should be. Come on guys, a new instrument cluster would be good. Being it literally looks like it was added after the the car was made, like somebody got some double sided tape and stuck it on top of the dash at the last minute of manufacture. To much plastic. Just waiting to break. The vibrations make it all rattle. Headlights fail, the plastic part on the rear drivers side guard falls off in the heat and 1 of the mudguards broke for the second time since new, just from the vibration. Very weak on either side of where 1 of the plastic screws fixes it into the plastic in the guard. The rear window washer has stopped working before and has again. Now theres alot of dry white bits falling on the dash from either side of the windscreen, the plastics on each side are vibrating badly and are very loose now. Alot of little things need to be done that would make this car great. Going to test drive a new model this week. Hope its better. I also think its pretty poor of our australian filter companies not being bothered to check there parts against the mahindra part numbers so we arnt stuck having to import from india or pay the rediculous prices from ford. Do yourselves and us mahindra owners a favour and check the Indian part sites and match the part numbers to your own. So places like repco, bursons and autobarn etc can tell us that they have aftermarket parts in stock. I cant believe i cant buy any accessories or aftermarket parts in australia. Even though most places have the filters, brake pads etc that match the genuine parts, and dont even know it. If they dont, there are many indian sites willing to ship the parts here. Theres fitted dash mats, seat covers, floor mats, weathershields and side steps. to go with the filters. I realise there hasnt been many sold in australia, but come on, not even the basic after market filters

Really like this car! – We originally test drove this car in 2013 and hated it - AWD drove like a FWD, brakes were horrible, felt like I was driving a massive truck. Fast forward 3 years, and a new model XUV5OO, and it's a completely different car! It no longer feels like a big car, and is quite pleasant to drive. Being short, I have trouble with not sitting up high… Read more

enough in most cars to see over the wheel - a problem I don't have in this car. Though the floor level is quite low, so it isn't hard to get into (2 & 4 yo can get in easily).

It has some really nifty features I haven't seen before - conversation mirror and ambience lighting amuse the kids, puddle lights come on turning corners (though not rounding bends cleverly enough) making it easier to detect changes in terrain, or wider than usual gutters, centre console is air conditioned so you can keep things cold ( coke can, chocolate, medications).

Overtaking power is amazing. Fuel consumption is awesome (14kmpl), especially when considering it's a 7 seater. Rear seats are very easy to pop up and down, unlike other 7 seaters, and while this does leave next to no boot space, there was enough room for out kmart umbrella stroller. We drove this car from Gippsland Vic to Cairns Qld in comfort and without issue or surprises - other than how little we spent on fuel! Bluetooth can connect one phone for calls, and another for music.

It's not all sunshine and lollipops:

Being a newer car, the mechanical knowledge is not great yet. The car had a faulty accelerator pedal, which took 7 weeks to diagnose, including consultation with head office in India.

Windows don't have auto-power up. Cruise control is fiddly. Sat nav is not responsive to fingers, making it time consuming to program (though this problem was overcome by using the eraser on a pacer instead of a finger!).

Overall, the benefits of this car well outweigh its pitfalls. It's a lot of car, for not a lot of money. Thinking of getting a second one.

Hit and miss – Only kept it up to 40,000kms as it was too problematic. Problems: Tailgate release failed, drivers power window regulator failed, all 4 door puddle lamps fell out and smashed, bluetooth microphone was useless above 50kms/h, hi-beam fuse constantly blew, coolant leak, engine out to repair oil leak, stability control inoperative, brake pad squeal… Read more

and scored rotors, plastic rear wheel arch trim piece kept peeling away, voice control never worked, rusty welds on tow bar hitch receiver and the washer sprays for the windscreen were useless.

It was good on fuel and there was plenty of passenger room in all 3 rows. If everything was ok we would've kept it but when trading it in after exhaustive shopping we only got $7k wholesale. No one wanted it and we didn't want the repercussions of a lemon selling privately.

Perfect and waiting for automatic to come to Australia – My car has done 40000 kms ,and still in excellent condition. I am waiting for it's automatic variant which is supposed to come in mid 2016. Try and feel a car which has done about 50000 kms rather than relying on my verbal explanation, and which will surely make you experience the reality.  Show details

This car was a complete failure for us – Not all experiences will be the same as ours. Rear diff replaced 4 times, all 4 windows replaced, brakes replaced, cd replaced, indicator replaced, windscreen rubber replaced, door lights replaced, interior on tailgate peeled away. done over 50,000 and the rear aircon has failed, the warrant has now run out. We have traded it now before it completely burns us. It's very economical and has some great features but the poor build quality may bite you in the end.

Great car and good value for money – I have had this car since 2012, might be done of the first few owners of the car. So far I am very happy with the performance and excellent fuel economy it offered. Have done 50000+ km so far in it and I am quite happy to have it. I did have some issues with the car as mine was a series 1 model, was mainly the brakes and power window, all these… Read more

was sorted when the manufacturer updated the model and the dealer recalled the car and sorted it out. And with the service it's not expensive, also u can get the car serviced by any qualified mechanic. As with the parts mahindra dealer has it in stock or they can get it from Brisbane for you.

Very impressed the way it drive with all the luxury gadgets it offered at a very less price when compared with similar suv..I would definitely buy this for my wife when the automatic comes which I think is coming early 2016.

Anyone in the market for a good value for money car, look no further..

The best vehicle we've ever purchased..Looking to get another Mahindra for our 2nd car too – Luxurious, Economical, with all the extras that would normally cost a fortune with the bigger name car companies. reverse camera, so much legroom we have 4 teenagers . the fuel economy is fabulous we got 920 klms to a tank of diesel,, which cost us $105 to fill the tank. our servicing is very affordable approx $250 . the 3rd row seating is great with own adjustable air con controls & cigarette lighter plugs for kids devices to charge & cup holders , all the little creature comforts that make long drives more comfortable.

Very nice car to drive and very happy with our Mahindra

Value For Money – I have owned two XUV's: Xuv #1 - 2013 Diesel FWD 7 Seater : I bought this car secondhand and hence didn't know what pre existing issues it came with. Bought it with 25,000 kms on it and nearly put about $100,000 kms on it. Generally, the car never failed us mechanically but i could tell there were underlying issues with the gearbox and engine… Read more

oil leaks. Mahindra HQ were really good though, they replaced and fixed a lot of our issues even after our warranty expired.

To drive i hated the manual transmission on FWD a lot ! it just didn't work well for me. The long throw gears meant i was always slow from traffic lights starts. My wife had no issues with it though.

This lead me to sell and buy the automatic transmission.

XUV #2 - Bought it new 2016 FwD Diesel automatic and i have put 100,000 kms on it. So far, i have had the following issues, GPS won't work, Reverse camera stopped working- Mahindra got it sorted for me, minor engine oil seal leaks, air conditioning noise, but nothing major.

The plastics in the car are not that great but its better than the older models.

The car itself is good, transmission can be clunky on cold winter mornings in Canberra for the first 5-10mins. I have tried to get Mahindra and service centre to have this fixed but they always say they can't replicate the issue. So I have given up on the issue and ignore it. The 7 seats with leather are great. i am 5.11 and can sit in the boot with my knees touching the passenger seat but not uncomfortable. There is no space once the 7 seats are up though. We do go camping with it to some pretty cool places and its been a great car and we tow a trailer/caravan along and the car does well everytime.

Mahindra HQ was great but they have slowly stepped away from their great customer care service. My car is out of warranty and so to get any issues fixed is a big effort. My GPS was faulty during the warranty period but Mahindra failed to fix it for me and I have given up chasing after them.

The car does have some smart features in it. Let's you know when the tire pressure is low, warns you when brake pads wear out etc, which i think awesome value for money and some of the way more expensive cars don't have such features.

In comparison to other cars this car is lot more noisy, has vibrations and is unrefined but it won't break down on you. Well....so far mine hasn't. I am not sure if the petrol version is any better.

Finding a good service centre is a challenge in Canberra, so I have always been taking my car out to other cities and had it serviced while I am on travel.

Resale value is a bit tricky on these cars, given not many people know about these cars it generally doesn't hold its value.

Bold, strong and muscular – My advice is : please dont buy a car based on the reviews you read, drive it and you would love this car.if mahindra could survive in tough Indian roads and climates, for years why cant it do it in the buttery roads in Australia.I bought this beautiful car a month ago and a big admirer to it.  Show details

Great value for money and no Diesel Particulate Filter – Bought this SUV on Christmas eve 2013. [name removed] from Value Mahindra, Campbellfield were fantastic. So far I have done 3800 kms and my fuel efficiency averaged around 7/100 kms. The car has all the required features and I don't think you will find a car in this price range with Leather seats. Another main reason to buy this car is Euro 4… Read more ·  1

standard, which means there is no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Very simple to maintain and spare part are usually cheap overseas, I haven't bought spares here but will have few options to get spares when the need arises. Engine designed with technical collaboration from AVL, Germany. Most of the safety bit are engineered and source from Bosch, Germany. I am quite happy with the decision. Leather seats, Navigation and inexpensive.

biggest mistake buying this car – Hi Guys Please dont make the mistake which I have done it. I thought same thing value for money but didnt know that is going to cost me much more than what I had paid for the new car. THIS CAR REALLY SUCKS I bought this car last year in march2014 . I started having issue since day one. the car was not inspected prior to delivery  which I… Read more

came to know after the delivery when I started having problems with the car.  I spoke to the dealer and was told to take the car for 1st service and everything will be fixed.

 Issue 1

On the delivery day we have found out there was a scuff marks on the rims during inspection which finally got fixed now. approx 1year after making so many requests to Manufacturer.

Issue 2

On inspection found the exhaust pipes were rusty.  Was told that the exhaust pipes will be changed on 1st service (5000) but nothing got done yet And mahindra adviced to the dealer use jiff to clean the rust.

Issue 3

After delivery found out that navigator is not working. Got fixed on 2nd service. ( 10000)

Issue 4

Bluetooth was not working post delivery. Got it fixed in January 2015 after too many requests

Issue 5

Had problem with braking system which got fixed post delivery and now same problem started again

Issue 6

Having problem with wipers but was told that it was manufactured like this and there is nothing they can do.

Issue was wiper move before water splash on the wind screen which havr already made scratches on the front glass

Issue 7

Now the major problem I am facing now is that couple of months ago post delivery I found coolant leakage marks around the engine. The car got inspected by the dealer and was told that they have cleaned it  and could not find any leakage.  Couple of days later I found the coolant leakage mark again and the  car got inspected again and was told this time that the radiator cap needs replacment which would be done under warranty. So they scheduled me for another appointment. On the day when I have given the car to them I received the call from service supervisor that there is a leakage form the Head Mount and they need the car for couple of days to fix it.

My car has only got 18000 kms uptill now.

My car is still on there work shop from last 2 months.

Tried to send emails to Mahindra got no reply

even called them and reply was my worries and stress is zero for them & call just got hang up by them.

At this moment I am very much worried and stressed regarding the head gasket which was leaking and what sort of damage it has done to the engine. if they miss something while repairing the car and the issue arises again after my warranty has expired then I have to pay a massive amount to get it fixed.

Once they have replaced the head gasket, it will devalue my car too if I decide to sell in future.

Another major drawback which I didnt think before buying this car was, car parts are not available easily outside market. So every time I have to go to dealer for servicing or any other machanical repair which dearer from the local machanic.

Normally for normal service i have paid $360 which includes only engine oil, oil filter change.

I had filled the compliant in fair trading regarding faulty car, even fair trading tried to contact them received no reply from Mahindra, so fair trading has suggested me to take this matter furture to tribunal court

So I am going to court

Best of luck to those peoples who have bought this car and to those who are looking forward to buy this

Excellent Value For Money – My XUV500 has travelled 30,500 kilometres since April 2013 and only one warranty repair was needed, disc brake pads noisy and grinding which was fixed with an exchange of pads at the first service. No other problems since. The turbo diesel performs well and comfortably towed a tandem axle boat trailer and load of 1800Kg from NSW to Qld when the… Read more ·  8

engine was still being run in with about 10,000 kilometres travelled. Average diesel consumption mostly country roads and highways but also around towns is 15.4 Kms/Litre or slightly less than 6.5 Litres/100 Kms as recorded at each refuel stop. Comfort and road holding performance is very good, build quality too. I agree with Christian that the instrument panel can be not as clear as it should be in certain lighting conditions. XUV500 is very well equipped with accessories too numerous to list here, and is a genuine 7-seater with dual air conditioning. I have no hesitation recommending XUV500. It is a comfortable, handles well utility vehicle that is economical to own and operate.

Excellent value for money – An excellent value for money car, all the features are easy to use and drives well for a lower value of car, we have 15,000 on the clock and no issues as yet. small 2.2 turbo diesel it gets along very well and pulls a trailer quite well, would help to have a lower first gear for towing though.
