I bought one of these Arlec heaters for the bathroom to wall mount. It worked well for a few months then stopped. Found the heater has a tip over switch in it that turned it off. Pointed it back up a bit heard something move inside and away it went! Why there is a tip over switch in a wall mounted radiator i don’t know however that fixed mine. Show details
Piece of crap – Easy to install and use, heats well WHEN it works. We're onto our second one which is about to go back to Bunnings as the bloody thing won't turn on again. Show details
Do not buy it – You pay for what you get. This unit is absolutely rubbish. I bought it to go into my bathroom. Finished up throwing it out as each of the 3 units I tried did not last a day. Each unit was on for not more than 20 minutes. Show details
Radiant bathroom heat for $20 ! – We have had a 2 kilowatt fan heater and have just got sick of it. It heats but seems to just blow cold air around the bathroom and you just don't get warm ! I saw this heater in Bunnings and for $20 seemed a bargain price. I'm a retired electrician so did remove the cord and hard wire it. I had plenty of time to install it , so did not get… Read more
frustrated or throw a tantrum while doing the job. Looking forward to the heater being able to heat our bathroom and dry our hair under. I will just use the 1200 watt setting so wrapped the pullcord out of sight, around the wall brackets. We can switch the heater on and off , from a switch , right under the heater.
Installation problems, operation problems, but great when it works! – I chose a strip heater as I have a small bathroom and wanted instant heat, rather than a panel heater that took ages to warm up, and the sloping ceiling won't allow a ceiling flush fitted combo heater-light-fan. I got this online as the local large chain hardware store didn't have stock, so had to pay extra for postage. This is a DIY fit item,… Read more
but taking into account ceiling clearances, the heater had to be fitted further away than the only powerpoint in my bathroom, so I asked the electrician to install it and another power point at the same time. ($$$ adding up for a cheap heater with postage and now the electrician.) The electrician bitched the whole time that this brand is %^&* and the brackets were tricky to install. When it was installed it wouldn't turn on, setting the electrician off on another rant, but after reading the installation instructions it won't operate if it is tilted at too low an angle. Once the position was right it operated well. However, to turn it on you have to pull the string once for one bar, twice for two bars, and then a third time to turn it off. Every time you pull the string the heater tilts a little lower and then eventually cuts out. Once I turned it on, got in the shower, and by the time I got out the heater had turned itself off, so I had to clamber onto the vanity to push it back up, and it came back on again. When it's happily in the right place it does a great job, but it doesn't stay that way. After 6 weeks of minimal daily use the white upper surface has discoloured - see photos. My experience has been a combination of the other reviewers. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it, as I have to put too much effort into getting it to stay on!
Two failures out of two purchases – First purchase failed after less than 4 weeks of intermittent use. When it was working, it seemed to radiate less heat on the 2-bar (1200W) setting than a Heller 1500w strip heater on the 1-bar (500W) setting. The second Arlec 1200w purchased failed immediately, straight out of the box! Hours of time wasted. Show details
Shoddy heater – I installed a heater for the same reason as James. Been installed for 3 weeks and upper surface has a burnt, brown look. Arlec has told me that warranty is void because electrician hard wired it instead of using a PowerPoint. Will be avoiding cheap chinese made rubbish from Arlec in future
Inexpensive, effective heat – My partner couldn't cope with cold bathroom temperatures in the mornings, so we picked up a cheap Arlec radiant strip heater. I am a career firefighter, so was very reluctant to install such a heater, but am satisfied with the heater *if installed correctly*. It would be easy to skip the instructions and install it too close to a ceiling, or above… Read more
a bath etc. If you don't know what you're doing, hire a professional- the potential cost is just not worth it. The heater itself is quick to heat up, has the classic pull cord operation with two settings, and works well for the space (2m x 2m bathroom). It's cheaply made but sturdy enough. The hidden cost is in the price to run 1200w of electricity sucking radiant heating elements - we definitely noticed an increase in the electricity bill. That said, you are paying for a comfort. If you need a quick or inexpensive fix, this could fit the bill quite nicely.
