1. Air vent flow rate fast enough to exit open door without need for vent pipe. 2. Moisture builds up on control board during humid summers, shorting switches, requiring board repair often. 3. Drain plug can be removed for uninterrupted cooling, manual drainage. 4. Noise level same as split system. If it bothers you keep it outside, just as split system compressor. Show details

Cools perfectly – Cools perfectly. It is a strong 4.3kw Unit, which is noisey. Most Portables are noisy, especially over 3.5kw. Show details

Noisey doesnt cool – Very noise, only cool if you sit right on top of it. Placed in very small bedroom and only dropped temperature by 1 degree, unit is working flat out using full power to compensate heat coming off rear duct. I dont know how they can sell these units as air conditioners for cooling, should be advertized as air conditioner for using alot of power but… Read more

hardley no differende to temperature. Save your money and buy a fan. Noticed discontinued but still they have my money. Wouldnt buy anything Arlec again their is a reason why they are cheap

Does the job cooling - good solution for renter – Pretty good air conditioner that does work. Set it up in our rental and does a decent job of keeping our massive room (6x6m) cool. The window fitting isn't very intuitive but nothing duct tape couldn't solve. The sleep mode and timer don't really work properly but it's a small price to pay to ensure a comfortable night's sleep. Show details

Noisy, with one huge problem – Firstly, mine worked for about 18 months before breaking down. However: • It was pretty loud, especially in a small room • The heat coming from the rear and the hose almost negated the cool air it produced But the biggest problem, and this might apply to ALL Arlec portable air conditioners, is once it has broken down you can't find anyone to… Read more

repair it.

Arlec themselves said they can't recommend anyone outside of Melbourne, to repair one.

Their technical rep was great, very helpful and patient. But all he can do is make suggestions over the phone.

I tried numerous air conditioner repair companies and appliance handymen around Brisbane - none of them were interested in repairing it. One guy said it would be cheaper for me to go buy a new air conditioner than for him to come out and spend time trying to fix it.

Why on earth are these being sold nationally through places like Bunnings, when you can't get them looked at if there's a fault?

Fault with the window hose, dose not cool a small sealed room – Really bad quality, the hose that connects from the air conditioner to out the window, crumbled and just falls away. Have a very small sealed bedroom, only used air conditioner during the night. Did not cool my small room, extremely loud and useless. We bought 2 spent over $ 1500 and both had the same problems. costoumer service was pointless, rude and excruciatingly pointless.  Show details

Not happy.

Waste of space – Just blows hot air around the room really. No good for cooling. It starts with hot air. Then it class cos into gear after about 5 mins. Blows cold air for a few minutes. Then back to just air again. No condensation coming out of the outlet tube. Now I know why it from bunnings.  Show details

ARLEC PA 1500 4.2kw 15000Btu – Easy job on its base uplifting its carton ex Bunnings Nz$699 competitive 2 yr warranty. Setting up a breeze. Both Web Pdf +booklet instructions. Batteries for remote inc. Set up in my smaller hot bedroom Whangarei Nz running efficiently + cooling ahhh.... Temp on max 8 degrees celcius at grille running full mode. Cold overspill to main room ok but less than imagined.

Noiseness subjective - compressor fan assist is only white noise about similar to 40cm large fan on 3 but i can be lulled to sleep. Dropping back to quiet thermostat mode you might notice.

I'm happy no negatives yet after 2 weeks.

Wiil report back further after 1month on power cost etc

February 6th 2018 Update: Arlec 15000 BTU PA1500 Portable Aircon

A one year update - ARLEC 15000 BTU PA1500 Portable Aircon -- this continues to provide great performance. Will be working hard shortly as not yet hottest month in Nz February.

Maintaining 6-8 degrees low at grille on speed 2

Filters religiously clean to maintain efficiency.

White Noise subjective - auto switching to low

can be disturbing but run 1 degree cooler so can be lulled to sleep if fan speed un changed with unit 3 feet away. Pwr $10 wkly extra on hard use. No specific negatives yet - SUPERSHOPPERNZ

November 15th 2018 Update: THIS PORTABLE AIRCON DOES THE JOB

17/11/18 Last of my 3 reviews of this Portable Aircon.

Switched on after a restful winter but run briefly each month it fires up a chilly 6 degrees at grille with thermometer after 7mins. On a hot afternoon 23 outside cooled the bedroom average size well but not a lot of overspill to other rooms (understand that)

Other reviews here negative - mainly using it incorrect setting/manner

Optimimum room cool reached if on fan assist continually, course if fan assist off temp will go up until Fan assist thermostat kicks back in

Crucially important to get that setting correct or wrong impression got. Reliable nothing broken - keep rear plate filter scrupulously clean. Power will add $10 $20 extra wkly if frequent use all day & night. White noise ok sleeping but thermo of/on will disturb.

Your choice. Still happy 2 yrs on.

Not worth a damn – The box says 4.3kW but it doesn't say you get close to that in heat at the same time from the lower rear of the unit and the ducting. The exhaust duct got almost too hot to touch and until the day cooled down, it barely took the edge off the heat unless you sat on top of it. I used a comprehensive online AC size calculator that said I need 2.3kW… Read more

so 4.3kW should have more than done the job and quickly. 2 hours after I turned it on and it hasn't gotten the (closed) room down to 25'C. I purchased it today and it'll be going back tomorrow.

Not worth it – Purchased for cooling. Quite cumbersome to move around, doesn't travel over carpet and/or rugs well. I always have it on the strongest possible setting and will only ever reduce the temperature within the room by 2deg max. My Dyson fan does a better job. Lastly, and perhaps the reason the unit doesn't perform well, is that the window kit is such poor quality and quite make-shift. Save your $$.  Show details
