We have Chris Bowen proofed our home. With update – NQ has a sole power provider Ergon. Whilst pretty good reliability, in 2024, we have suffered many unscheduled outages. Its my opinion that the supply of electricity will become even less reliable with load shedding inevitable. The current Governments policies for renewables, will not provide 24/7 power. Our solution this Blue Diamond Genset, wired with an ATS [Automatic transfer system]. With two power outages totalling 4.8 hours in may 2024 alone, we feel vindicated. The genset started within 5 seconds of mains failure, supplying our entire homes supply needs, 7KVA with absolutely everything switched on. Including large split system airconditioning. Automatically shut down on mains returning. Yes we have solar, but unless coupled with a battery, solar decouples when the grid fails. Storage Batteries would cost more $168,000 to supply the same energy 7KVA for 24 hours. The Blue Diamond Generator has an inbuilt fuel tank providing 30 hours of runtime under maximum load. Also an inbuilt battery management system that ensures the cranking battery is always ready to kick in. Auto temp and oil shutdowns. We manually throw out the mains monthly for 15min to test run. In the North our homes are built for cyclones, unfortunately the Mains Power grid is not. We have suffered mains outages lasting weeks in the past. Blue Diamond was patient whilst we worked through just what system would best suit our needs. Only minor difficulty, the freight carriers local operator had no off the truck lifting capability. Not Blue Diamonds fault. A bobcat quickly offloaded the 670Kg load. Oh fuel consumption for 4.8 hours of outage...6 lts. CO2 emissions? tell someone to bottle it in their beer. UPDATE... I am extremely pleased to report during the very recent February 2025 Ingham Region Floods, following 2.3 metres of rain, and 8 days 4 hours without Mains Power, no communications, [after the towers failed within a couple of hours,] we did not notice any lifestyle loss. Our Automatic Transfer System kicked in the Genset at the start of the outage, ran continuous. Engine oil use after 196 hours, nil. Fuel consumption average 1.3 lts per hour. Sourcing additional fuel stocks was problematic, given our only local retail outlet flooded. Supply of additional fuel was overcome, mainly due to little demand for Diesel. The generosity of Wilmar Sugar Refineries. Diesel powered vehicles could not drive anywhere, so little to no demand for the most common vehicle power plant up this way. Most households with generators had the small petrol type that ran daytime only holding up refrigeration. Helicopters also flew in emergency petrol fuel supplies. We felt almost guilty, whilst some people were transported almost instantly back to the caveman era, forced to accept emergency meals flown in, no television , no communications. We had Air conditioning, Television, Two well stocked freezers, and refrigerators, Induction cooktop and ovens, absolutely , everything as per normal, All the bells and whistles, Including the swimming pool filtration, The pool we certainly used. Everything normal for us except Phones. Smartphones were reduced to useless slabs of lifeless plastic. We laughed at the the Media Nodding heads and Politicians advising via television news crosses from outside the area, that residents access Apps and Websites to keep updated. Really! Our Blue Diamond 10Kva An extremely worthwhile investment. Lesson learnt, have a Jerry Can Dry Cell battery powered fuel pump to make topping up the inbuilt 70Ltr Fuel Tank easier. It is now to hand and ready for topping up after the next 6 hour outage we have already been notified is scheduled for 12th March 2025. I guess further repairs or maintenance of the Ergon network. What was also learnt from this event, electric vehicles would be useless when there is no electricity available to charge them. Just like phones are useless when cell towers have no power and flat batteries..
