Breville Futura 4 Slice SG4000

good if you like sandwiches that have fallen apart – Wouldn't recommend as it keeps getting stuck to the roof and then you have to scrape it off with a knife which then scratches the coating. By the time the sandwich has fallen apart and you lose your appetite because you are now just thinking about the clean up that's waiting for you later. The cheese somehow makes contact with the cutting bit at… Read more
the top and burns, burnt cheese not fun.
I used to like breville 20 years ago but I guess they are not so great anymore.
Also bought a toaster of the same brand and not a fan not consistent toasting on either side and when using the same setting number you get different levels of doneness even with the same thickness of bread.
Four seemed like a good idea at the time – We were looking to buy a toastie maker and thought being able to make four at once was a good idea at the time. Hind sight is a wonderful thing and if I had my time again I would only by the one that does two at a time instead. Not that the performance is a problem cooking four at once, it's just bench and cupboard space wasted and we only seem… Read more
to cook two at a time anyway.
If you can eat four toasties like me there is no point doing all four at once as the last ones will be stone cold by the time you get to eat them. It doesn't take much to prep two more while the first two are cooking and cook them while eating the first lot.
I like others have experienced the issue with the sandwich sticking to the top lid when opening and pulling the sandwich apart when trying to get it off.
I find it such a chore to give it a good clean and yes it's such a difficult job once completely cooled. I remember it was heaps easier cleaning mums really old stainless Breville 2 sandwich maker.
The one thing I will give it, is that is deeper compared to some of those cheap and nasty 10 dollars ones that leak cheese every where and make and absolute mess. It's deep so you can make nice fat sandwiches Big and Bulky, terrible to clean
Versatile unit – Makes great sanwiches but sometimes the edges of the sandwiches at the front of the unit do not cook. Easy to clean if you do it within a minute or two after removing sandwiches. If you wait any longer then it bakes on and takes a long time to clean. I tried apple turnovers using puff pastry and coated the pastry with caster sugar on the outside… Read more
layers and they turned out excellent. I think the recipe book is lacking in instructions because it does not mention if you should butter the puff pastry like you do for sandwiches. I found out that you do not need to do so. Makes great sweet and savoury items Sandwich edges at the front of the unit do not always cook evenly. A more detailed instruction book for recipes is needed.
No nonstick, impossible to clean - buy another brand – Although the surface of the machine appears to be nonstick, I have owned two of these and found both to be terrible. The sandwich gets stuck to the top lid, does not seal shut, and falls apart when you open it up, and makes heaps of mess and the mess is impossible to clean off without scrubbing hard and damaging the surface. This is after only a… Read more
few minutes of cooking time!
So as to be fair, I have done a side by side comparison of the Breville with a Sunbeam product of same size and similar design. I got so fed up with the Breville, I went and bought the Sunbeam instead.
I cooked the same sandwich, for the same time, in both brands of machine. The Breville sandwich stuck to the top lid when I opened it, the sandwich fell apart, and made mess everywhere. This happens about 2/3 of the time when you use it. The result was an inedible mess, than took 20 minutes to scrape and scrub off the hotplate. The sunbeam sealed the contents of the sandwich properly and cooked fine. It took one piece of paper towel to wipe in clean in 10 seconds.
I thought my Breville was faulty, and bought a second - -but it was just as bad.
I cannot recommend this product and suggest you buy ANY other brand.
impossible to clean, does not seal sandwich contents
Excellent – We were given this toastie maker for our wedding back in 2001. It has not changed in design since, I guess there is nothing about it that needs to be changed. I have fount it to be strong, easy to clean and sturdy. Some how we have lost the cover for the lights, this is more likely due to us storing it with pots and pans and having things bang… Read more
against it, than design flaw. I think we will be getting many more years out of this toastie maker. I like that it has a green light to tell you when it is ready. I much prefer toastie makers that are deep than flat so that you can fit more in and cheese etc does not leak out of the sides. Easy to clean. Makes great snacks.
Good – I think this jumbo size design is perfect for a busy parent. You can make quick, healthy snacks for the children and save time by being able to toast four at the one time. Low fuss, easy to clean and use. This appliance makes my favourite kind of toasted sandwiches. Compared to the other styles that only make two sandwiches at a time, this one is… Read more
a jumbo size, allowing you to make up to four sandwiches at a time. After school time with the kids need not be such a hassle anymore! It is bulky so you need storage space for it. If you don't intend on making three or four sandwiches each time, then you should opt for the design that makes two sandwiches.
Excellent – Better than a sandwich press as it seals the edges of the sandwich which holds the filling in and allows for many different fillings to be used (my daughter loves them with baked beans). Great for sweet (eg.apple and cinnamon)or savory fillings. Gives better results with thicker bread but still has pleasing results with sandwich slices. Although a… Read more
sandwich press is better for foccasias. Overall my family is extremely happy with this product and use it regularly. I find it very easy to clean and cooks quickly. Stands up vertically for storing which takes up less room. Nothing we have found as yet.
Excellent – Cooked well, cleaned very easily, and surprisingly, is the first jaffle maker I've had that actually did what it said and cut the bread in half. Very deep area for fillings, holds an egg nicely. was easy to wipe clean with a damp sponge. It is designed for any run off (such as egg or baked bean sauce) to go left of right, it won't go down the… Read more
front or back – into
hard to clean moving parts like handles or hinges.
The run off also can't get under the hot plate and into the electrics,
which is how I've killed two previous ones >.> The outside appearance is not to my taste.
Good – I really wish i used this more to make the most out of it but sadly i don't. It's just easier to make regular toast or use the sandwich press. For what it's worth though this gadget performs very well. The 4 slice is a little baulky so unless you really need the 4 slice i would go for the two. Clean it while it's warm otherwise things like cheese… Read more
will stick to it and will be hard to clean later. Overall a good product, but not a necessary one. Easy to use, easy to clean, makes good jaffles, evenly toasts Bit of a novelty item, doesn't get used enough. A bit baulky in size
