Some serious materials defects and safety hazards on this kettle - it should be condemned – At the outset, I am pro-Breville as I believed that their products are better than most. But my accident with the Breville Soft Top™ Clear BKE495BSS kettle has dented my confidence in the brand wholesomely. On Saturday, the 12th June 2021, just after boiling water, the handle snapped clean off just as I was lifting the near-full kettle from the multi-directional base. As the "soft top" lid forms part of the handle mechanism, the kettle lid blew open simultaneously with boiling water flying everywhere. I really was not expecting anything like this to happen so almost dropped the kettle. During my instinctive attempt to regain my grip on the handle I received burns to my right hand and midriff area. I now see this type of breakage is common on this kettle. And due to the obvious serious materials defects and safety hazards on the Breville Soft Top™ Clear BKE495BSS kettle, it should be condemned outright. Furthermore, I am very surprised by the absence of responses by Breville - which in itself is totally unacceptable. I have looked after this kettle from day one and albeit out of warranty, this should never have happed - period. But see the pictures - Breville should take cognizance of, and ownership accordingly and therefore should address these latent defects with immediate effect.
Great Kettle – I have now had the ease, and pleasure of using this appliance since Oct, 2015. I find the item to boil quickly, and quietly; with a handy unobtrusive "ding" to advise me that the kettle has finished boiling the water. It does have a cut-out timer after the boiling has ceased, but after approximately a minute you are able to once again boil water. The only item of concern would be if you have small children. The exterior wall of the kettle, as expected is scalding hot so I would suggest situating the kettle in a safe area away from little hands.
Works like it should – I bought one for the inlaws for a present i loved it that much a few years later i got one when we needed a new one i love it boils great easy to clean good start button. Don't hard core clean out side as water marks rub off. We have had ours 4 yrs now. Never skips a beat. Show details
Looks good, ready to break – Looks good. Noisy. Takes a lot of boiling before it turns off. Water level difficult to see. Lid becoming slow to open after 1 year so according to other reviews I am expecting it to break in the next year. Nice to hold fill and pour. Show details
Pretty but weak – This kettle looks good and works fine until the soft open lid fails. It is the weakest link. The soft open gradually stopped working, then when trying to manually close the lid the entire mechanism mistracked and completely snapped off. So I now have a functioning kettle and a nice separately snapped lid. I could boil water if I wanted to but I… Read more
would have to turn it off myself. Funny how Kambrook can make the worlds ugliest kettle for $20 and it will never die, living on in back rooms since the 90s. I have so many Breville products and this one is a pretty disappointment. Did not make it to 2 years. I expect so much more for a stainless steel product. Do yourself a favour and skip it.

Almost perfect – Solid Feel. Great Ergonomics. Handle done right, and a soft touch open. It's metal, so it's not going to split at the sprout, like previous plastic kettles have done. Looks good, feels good, and I'd spent an hour trying various kettles at a Goodguys and Harvey.. Only a 1 year Warranty..and you have to remember it's metal, so the outside gets hot. Really hot. but not the handle.. I've very pleased with it Show details
Excellent Purchase – I love this Kettle, it does what it is supposed to do, very well. I went for the red model as it matches the rest of my appliances, but there are other colour options available. It is quite inexpensive compared to some other kettles. I highly recommend this kettle, particularly if you are looking for a stylish one on a tight budget. Show details
Great Kettle – This has been a great kettle ! Very easy to use, looks great, soft "bing" sound when water comes to the boil (doesn't wake other family members). Easy to fill with water from the tap and clear water level marking. Handle is sturdy but comfortable to hold when pouring water. Would definitely purchase again ! Thanks Breville. Show details

Good until the lid failed – I bought this kettle less than a year ago and it was working well until the lid no longer closed. I have temporarily used masking tape to keep it down, but it makes it fiddly to refill via the spout. It is otherwise well-made, feels robust, boils quickly and the soft ding sound is pleasant to the ear. I would consider repurchasing this brand, perhaps in a newer model. Show details
Okay, not great – It certainly doesn't boil water quietly, but I'm personally not fussed about that, just as long as it actually boils water, which it does. As far as boiling time is concerned, it's not really any better or worse than most kettles we've had; it's about average. But now the things I don't like. When it finished boiling, it used to make a little… Read more
'ding' sound, which was honestly far too quiet. If you weren't in the room when it finished then you'd be hard pressed to hear it. After 12 months, though, it doesn't make any sound at all now when it finishes boiling; it just stops. Also, the plastic window is that horrible dark green colour, making it incredibly difficult to actually see where the water level is. This annoys me no end, and Breville really need to stop using that.
Look, the kettle boils water, which is useful with a kettle. But honestly, the green window alone would be enough to stop me from buying this again, or any other kettle using that. I want to be able to actually SEE where the water is without spending extra time holding it up, saying "Is that the water there?".
Breville Kettle Handle - broke into pieces a few days after 1 year warranty has expired – Bought Breville The Soft Top Clear Kettle Stainless Steel from Catch of the day to replace our old but still working electric kettle - Regretting it now big time! Breville kettle's handle broke into pieces when I lift it after boiling water - very dangerous. Used the old kettle for more than 10 years - Breville kettle has 1 year life span only -… Read more
Disappointing - Catch only offers 1 year warranty - the manufacturer's warranty. Will never buy Breville. Catch is still selling the same model. Disappointed with Catch for selling substandard product without offering help to customers.

Noisy noisy noisy – If you want to wake the whole house this kettle is for you. Horrible kettle, sounds like a spaceship taking off. Will be returning to the shop for a full refund. This day and age there should be no need for such noise from a modern kettle. Buyer beware do your research Show details
safety issue – i got my first breville kettle on november 2016 and got issue with it (it kept boiling the wate and didn't automatic turn off). I had returned and exchanged for another one and now this one doing the same thing. it's really wasting time to go back and forth to return it. i felt really annoy. Show details

Very loud – I have just bought this kettle from jb hi fi as I thought I can never go wrong with breville. But after buying this kettle I got very frustrated with this brand. It makes very loud noise during boiling the water and takes longer comparison to my old kambrook kettle. I won't recommend this to anyone. Not good product from breville at that high price. Hi Rajni - if you have the receipt please return to the place of purchase for refund. Thanks, the Breville team
Terrible kettle don't buy it – I Had this kettle for a total of 2 days. It didn't shut off when it boiled and blew the circuit breaker for the whole house. It was relatively noisy boiling and I spent a considerable amount of time researching what kettle was good and Breville is usually a very reliable product. I was Totally disappointed. Show details
Hi S.Lou - we hope you were easily able to return this kettle to the place of purchase. The Breville team
Great kettle and still runnning – Bought it 2 years ago, it has been great but loud. Now it is starting to leak from the seal when boiling and pouring. I do notice that sometimes it keeps on going even the water is boil and this really scares me if it will explode. When this happens, the handle is really hot, and it scalded my hand the first few times it happen. Now just need to use precaution when using it. But then again, it last for very long time! Kettle keeps boiling – We bought this kettle to replace our old leaking kettle bought from supermarket (used it for 7 years). One week to using it, we notice that the kettle keeps boiling on some occasions. We timed it once to see how long it kept boiling... 2 minutes and it was still going. This is so dangerous. We will be returning it.

There is a safety issue of this product – I purchased it one and half year ago and used it a couple of times a day. It was broken last Friday while I was boiling the water, that even caused the main switch of the power board off. It was a terrible experience and cost us $80 to call electrician in.
great kettle still going not dead yet lol – i have had this kettle for 3 years now and still going strong. i use it a few times a day yes the kettle does get hot like everyone else has said. i don't know if anyone else has noticed on their kettles that the water gauge markers have worn off? Love to heat up water? This is this appliance for you! – I use this kettle only a few times a week (for 4 months so far), but I have only had positive experiences with it. I have not found the boiling too noisy or intrusive, and the bell that signals completion is fine. Yes the outside of the kettle gets very hot, but this is why we invented handles. It's not easy to clean the inside of the kettle, but I try to take good care of it as I wish for it to last as long as possible.
Loud but works ok – We have a Breville coffee machine and milkshake maker which have lasted for some time so we bought this to replace our leaking Sunbeam which lasted about 1 year. This kettle is much louder. It "dings" when it has boiled which is a joke. Firstly, you can hardly hear the "ding" over the noise and secondly, it makes so much noise that it doesn't need… Read more
to ding anyway. The power switch has a flimsy feel to it.
On the plus side, water goes in cold and comes out hot and it is quick to boil. The lid opens slowly so it wont flick hot water on you which is a good feature.
OK but Annoying Ding and Condensation in the Lid – Replacing another Breville kettle that had broken. A noisy as the old one but boils quickly (so can boil during TV ads). Hate the ding which sounds when putting the kettle back on the base too and the condensation showing in the clear lid - who needs a clear lid?

Extremely noisy – Can't talk while the kettle is boiling, it's extremely loud for my liking so I will be looking for a quieter model. Everything else is fine regarding the kettle - it's BPA free. - soft lid open is a bonus. - double sided water level indicators. - small bell ding when the water is boiled.
Unreliable Starter – Whilst the kettle boils quickly and always turns off, getting it to start is a real hit and miss. Rarely will it commence boiling with the first flick of the lever. Usually it flicks back up 2-3 times before it activates. And sometimes not straight away either. There can be a up to a 5 sec delay and then it will turn off. I've tried turning the… Read more
kitchen once in the base, in case contact was a problem, but to no avail. Every other Breville kitchen product we have is great, so this must be our lemon. It is less than a year old, but unfortunately I can't find the receipt, so we'll just persevere. Ggrrrr.
Great simple kettle – I've always been a fan of breville and after my Russell Hobbs whisper kettle (not so whisper after all) leaked I was in need to buy a new one and wanted to stay right away from Russell Hobbs. I read reviews on this kettle and one of them worried me as I like to boil the kettle pour it in a pot for boiling pasta and re oil the kettle with new… Read more · 1
water. One of the other reviews said this kettle can't do it but it actually can.
I love the ding when it's done and I love to be able to just press the button for the top to open to refill.
It's a great product and I was offered an extra 2 years warranty for replacement for on,y $19. Because I trust the product I stuck with the included 1 year.
I bought mine at the good guys and go them to price match with billy guetts as they had it advertised for $70 and the good guys was $84
My model was Bke495
Good Kettle with two main downsides – Breville small appliances are always reliable, and this kettle is too. This is a solid kettle that does the job, boils the water quite fast, easy to clean, and it looks great on my kitchen bench. However, I expected more for the price I paid. I hate the high pitched ping sound that you get when the water is boiled and the kettle switches… Read more
itself off. As if the kettle wasn't noisy enough.
The worst thing to me is that the see-through areas are useless. The material and the colour of it attracts water condensation, so you basically see water drops all over, not the water level. A Target 10 dollar kettle has a better see-through system..
great hot water kettles – I bought the hot water kettle from Myer and it kept on working for many years without a hitch except sometimes it would get stuck on boil though that problem was easily fixed by turning the kettle and then letting it cool down and it would be back to normal for it's price range it's absolutely outstanding Show 2 replies
Basic, reliable kettle – We researched so many kettles when our old one died, but after checking reviews of the ones with all the multi-beverage boiling options (heating to a certain temp) and realising none of them had good reviews, we decided to go with this kettle. Simple, it works, it looks fine and won't go out of style anytime soon. And it was a very reasonable price. Happy customer.
Works well BUT – A Great kettle if you don't want to boil water twice in a row. I have a big family and when we fill up one pot of tea, we then want hot water for coffees etc. Can't do it with this kettle as it has a 'protection system' that doesn't allow you to boil it again while it's still WARM. Totally frustrating and useless for our family. Had to return it.
good kettle but plastic erodes – I've had this kettle for a few years now and just noticed that the plastic near the spout has been eroding and fine deposits of powder have been going into our drinks - not ideal! Other than this it was a great product. Not sure how long kettles are meant to last these days but anyone that owns one of these should keep an eye on this problem.
Awful kettle – I bought this kettlw as it's hard to get one that's not "smar"t these days but not s cheap plastic one. I'd had 2 cheap plastic and was so k of them leaking. This is worse. It leaks. The top doesn't close and it's auto off doesn't work. Terrible terrible waste of money
Worst kettle – I bought this kettle as it looked good and seemed to be a quiet one. After a few uses it didn't shut off and kept boiling. It also developed a rust looking substance on the bottom of the kettle giving the water an orange colour. Yes it was quieter and looked good but did not do the job properly. Luckily it was still under warranty to be changed.
good kettle – Its cheaper than most, works well, makes a ding noise when boiled. Makes a little bit of noise but I think most of them do. I had a $150 Morphy Richards I reckon this kettle is better and cheaper.
Not too happy – This kettle is quiet, aesthetically nice on my bench, the handle feels good in my hand compared to others. It boils quicker than others, however this is my second one that doesn't shut off when it comes to the boil. I just swapped this one over, as the other one was under 12 months. I have used it 4 times & 3 times it has not shut off automatically, so back it goes!
Smart and quick to boil kettle – What can you say really, it does what it's designed to do. It boils water. It's fast and quiet and I've not had any problems at all with mine. What I will say though is it looks stylish. Perfect for our kitchen and to match our toaster. Would recommend to any. Looks good, does what it's suposed to do

Nearly a decade of constant usage ☺️ Still working as it should. Can't argue with myself, great value in this product: Personally my experience. Chuckles it'll probably " Give up the Ghost " now ☺️ Ah well.
