I purchased this machine to do buttonholes only but dissapointed in the finish of them also the cover for the bobbin compartment keeps coming off while sewing now i have lost it only good for running a few different stitches not for sewing complete garments Show details
Decent machine, but with a couple of flaws – Not a bad machine for basic sewing (straight, zigzag, and various fancy stitches). Threading assist works fine. Winding thread onto the bobbin is not a problem at all. Button sewing OK (only used that a few times). There are two main issues I've had. (i) Tension cannot (readily) be adjusted on the bottom thread (bobbin), and seems too tight… Read more
for light fabrics. (ii) Button hole is certainly not "one-step" from my experience, but rather quite finicky; results are eventually (after several attempts) tolerable for functional button-holes that nobody else will ever see, but not presentable for anything else. I'm a competent sewer (not professional/advanced). Had this machine for the better part of a decade, I guess; purchased from Spotlight.
Awful – I hate this sewing machine. Trying to wind cotton onto the bobbin, the easiest part of sewing, is impossible. I've never had that problem before. I've read the useless instruction book, watched videos online and I still can't do it. I'm selling this rubbish Show details
Worst tension – This is not a good machine! I agree with the other reviews, the tension is horrible and this sewing machine is only good for basic things, not worth it! Show details
I can live without this machine – I would never buy this model of Brother again. It is hit and miss after 9 months from purchase. The buttonhole function does not work correctly and am mostly unpicking and starting again. It sometimes does not like to start at the beginning of the seam and my material gets jammed in the teeth feed. I am going to sell it and buy a different brand. Maybe I just have a lemon. Ok for light work – Liked the top load bobbin. bobbin winder performs well. Tension issues over time sewing heavier fabrics. (By which I mean light canvas and denim). plastic body means machine likes to walk on the surface unless you have some grip. *UPDATE* Machine is now fine on heavier fabrics, but lighter fabrics the tension is bad. There is a bobbin case for… Read more
another machine that is reputed to fit this that has adjustable tension. I will try to locate that, and let you know if I find a part number, as the upper tension on this has become completely whacko over time. Watch this space.
The light is pretty good, and being LED, you're not having to change it every five minutes.
The feed is microscopically 'off' over time. Now having to hold work at a miniscule angle in order to feed through straight.
I'd say a good beginner machine for light projects. I wouldn't recommend putting expensive materials anywhere near this machine. It has a habit of losing tension settings at random. And yes, it's been serviced and had all the cleaning and troubleshooting.
Nice to have the free arm, but the onboard storage is worse than useless. Full complement of basic decorative stitches, which are nice to have.
I bought this as an emergency machine, and used it for a bit, but now I have to repair my old faithful, because this isn't sturdy enough, has no basting stitch length, isn't precise enough when doing a quilting block where matching seams are important - the presser foot doesn't hold firmly enough and you get a fair amount of shift in your fabrics. A walking foot helps a bit, but you shouldn't have to do that for light quilting on one block for a small project.
I think for the price it should have had a two speed pedal, and a few extra feet of cord, as the body really is el cheapo.
And the one step buttonhole never worked properly.
I can't understand why ANYONE would EVER make a sewing machine where the maximum stitch length is less than 7mm - basting is needed in sewing well, and why the dickens would anyone do it by hand when a machine can do it perfectly well?
I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone - there are better entry level machines at around the same price point. I was in a hurry and listened to the suggestions made to me, and I wish I hadn't. It's not been bad as such, but definitely not good, either. Not for a serious sewer.
Perfect for a beginner – I bought brother GS2700 few months back through online. It is in good working condition. I am not a beginner in sewing. I knew only basics of sewing before getting this. Now I developed my sewing skills very much using this. I could sew all types of fabrics in that till now. Really it worth. Show details
Great for a beginner – I haven't used a sewing machine since high school home ec and did a huge amount of research before ultimately buying this machine (based largely on the positive reviews on this site and the fact that it was on sale at Myer for $189). The DVD is super useful - I just popped it in and it got me started. No jams or issues at all so far. Will update this review if I have any future issues. I'm so glad I chose this machine - love it.
Let there be light !! – It's a nice looking machine. Sounds great. Very smooth. Light weight but stable. Good instruction manual and video disc was very helpful. However, straight out of the box and the light doesn't work. What a disappointment.
Awesome it is – It is a very good beginner- intermediate sewing machine. The one step button hole, auto-needle threader, top load bobbin all makes it so easy that, as Auzziepie mentioned I also graduate from a clueless beginner to intermediate seamstress. Have been making a lot of dresses for my little girl since I got this baby. So far no complaints and I just love it.
Great machine! – I've had this machine for over a year now and it hasn't let me down. I've now graduated from a clueless beginner sewer (what's a bobbin?) to an advanced beginner/intermediate (sewing dresses, dolls and even done some shirring with ease). I would recommend this machine from a beginner to a hobby sewist. It does everything I need it to do, but I… Read more
would like to upgrade in the future to one with some more functions. This is a great machine at a great price. I would have liked a machine with a hard case rather than the plastic dust cover, but I made a quilted sewing machine cover for it which looks ten times better! One step button hole, automatic needle threader, DVD instructions, easy to read manual
Excellent beginner sewing machine – I got this baby a few months ago and my my.. I have been sewing everyday since. It is a beginner friendly machine with many good features. I thought the price was excellent for a not-so-basic sewing machine yet an invaluable machine for a beginner like me. I basically started using it right away, making A-line skirts, simple summer dresses and… Read more
shawls. drop bobbin case, automatic 1 step button hole (brilliant for beginners), automatic needle threader (my eyesight is rather poor), inexpensive and very reliable
