Contigo Byron Thermal Flask
Verified4 reviews
Only lasted 18 months before the seals stopped working – We bought 4 of these in 2021 after reading good reviews about them. They do a great job initially of keeping drinks hot. Despite never having been touched, the lid seals on all 4 have stretched so much they are now not useable. I found this out after hot tea leaked all through my work bag and car. The external coating has peeled off in sections too, so they look pretty ratty already. They were only ever taken between home and the office via my work bag, so it’s not like they had particularly rough treatment. It’s a shame they’re not made to last.
Purchased in at Everten for $23.95.
Great for a while, then useless – I have enjoyed using my Contigo Byron Thermal Flask. It has managed to keep liquids hot for many hours. I use it for long car trips of which there have been very few during Covid lockdowns. But after about 18 months or so the seal in the lid has failed, it has stretched even though I have only hand washed the mug and lid. The mug now leaks badly and this heavy duty mug is useless.
I have written to the Australian distributors and they say the mugs only have a 12 month warranty and they don't have spare parts. I am keen to find a seal online but can't confirm if any will fit Contigo.
I will never buy Contigo again - in the USA they say they come with a Lifetime Guarantee but not here in Australia. Ready bad backup support, and disappointing product with way too short a life. Can't find a seal online that will definitely do the job. Now to landfill - shame on you Contigo!
Since contacting Contigo in Australia to ask for a spare seal they have kindly sent a replacement mug which has been greatly appreciated.
But the problem is that I would like to keep my original mug out of land fill. I have managed to find on E Bay "10 packet white silicon O Ring gasket OD 68mm CS 3.5mm" at $6.11 AUD which arrived quickly, fit the mug and seal well - so should now be able to keep my favourite Contigo Travel Coffee Mug going for years to come.
A pity Contigo can't assist with this. Hopes it helps others with a similar problem.
Great, except that it doesn't seal properly – The flask keeps liquid at the same temperature for a long time. It's relatively easy to clean and is strong and sturdy. These are two important features, but are negated by the rubber gasket which gets twisted. I can sometimes fix it and it will stay good for a while, only to get all mangled up again leading to stains on my clothes. For that reason I cannot recommend it and I would never buy it again.
Purchased in at Coles.
The seal mangled after a week risking hot liquid spills + it burns your lips – Reviews elsewhere are right: 1) This cup risks people having hot liquid spill on them or in their bag. The seal inside it came away from the groove within about a week. The result was leakage, even though it claims to be 'leak proof'. With several minutes careful effort I put it back in but its bound to come out again. The only way it MIGHT stay in is if you were super careful to close it ONLY enough to prevent it bending up and becoming loose. But given this happens so easily, I have my doubts.
2) The drinking hole seems quite badly designed. I burnt my top lip every single time I tried to use it shortly after pouring in tea of normal temperature. This did NOT happen on another cup I bought.
The one pro is it does keep things quite hot. Hence I started using it as a kind of thermos. But the fact that it is NOT leak proof makes me think I will take this back and look for the best vaccuum cup I can find. But disappointing for $25.
Reputations are hard to build but easy to destroy with one bad product.
