Great machine – Sometimes its hard to start otherwise I have no problems with it, bought it second hand last year to replace an electric unit which was useless. one question, model no LSC 505, the blade, is it available or do i just sharpen the old one, it's totally different to the download I saw, its one piece in a star design, very happy with how it mulches. Difficult to start – Not easy to start. I need to take the spark plug out and add petrol into the chamber just to start it. Mine is a Cox shredder looking slightly different to this one but basically the same in principle. They should come with a petrol primer like some Lawn Movers have. Show details
Difficult to start – Ok ones you get the darn thing started but often when you do, you are Lready stuffed to xarry on with shredding. I don'tike the chute o the one i have that differs and is longer. It is a pain feeding it. Often it won't feed through and i eed to fet a stick to work it through. I could not recommemd it, especialy having paid $1,700 for it. Show details
A Great Australian Mulcher – I understand Cox has recently taken over Greenfield Mowers in Queensland, another terrific company that makes bullet proof equipment for the local and overseas market. I bought the mulcher second hand from a school 24 years ago and had it serviced about five years past. The pull rope was replaced, new air filter, spark plug, oil change and a… Read more
thorough checkover for $80. The mechanic said he'd see it again in another 20 years as nothing ever goes wrong with them. There is a little trick to starting but once warm it can be used for hours then left a few minutes on idle to cool. A friend borrowed it once and said they put through all the old 75mm pickets they found laying around. Now the chute blades are blunt and I haven't bothered to sharpen them. (The friend won't get to borrow it again.) It is a pity other users had had difficulty with theirs but my second hand mulcher has been just great. It is being passed down soon to my son and I'm buying an Australian Hansa, which people in the UK have told me is the best they have used.
Great robust machine, built like a tank – This machine is solid and well built and the Briggs & Stratton engine is very reliable and easy to start. Engine spares are very easily available almost everywhere although rarely needed. The mulcher used a large flywheel fitted with flails or hammers which do much of the work and never need resharpening. Larger material is cut with a revolving… Read more
knife which is fairly easy to resharpen. Large quantities of vegetation can be handled with ease. Not only is the mulch useful for the garden but any surplus to go in the green bin is reduced to around a quarter of the original value. Far better than any electric mulcher which should be avoided. I have had one of these mulchers for a number of years for my 1/3 acre block with plenty of tree and shrubs and it was great.
Pretty darn good shredder – I bought this secondhand - apparently it had been sitting unused for at least 4 years and the carburettor and engine were gummed up and it wouldn't start. I drained the old fuel, changed the engine oil, spark plug and replaced the carburettor ($32 on the auction site), gave it a spray of ether and it fired up third pull! How does it work? It's… Read more
a fairly frightening beast and destroys green cuttings (our garden is mostly grevilleas and callistemons) like you wouldn't believe. It isn't a "flail" type shredder rather it spins a large steel disc with blades (a little like planer blades) on the branch side and larger serrated edge cutters on the foliage side.
So far it's handled everything I've thrown at it and it's produced very nice mulch for the garden. It makes much more sense than carrying our waste to the tip and then paying someone to deliver mulch.
Based on how little care this has had in it's life and how well it's responded to a little TLC I'd highly recommend it as long as you have realistic expectations of what it can handle. Ie. Green cuttings not dried and, if you are feeding larger branches take it nice and slow.
Great Machine and shredder – We purchased this machine 5 years ago. We have a large yard with native trees and others keeping us busy eg fallen limbs, pruning etc. The Cox shredder is fantastic for chewing up a large heaps in less than an hour. This machine has never missed a beat and I truly wonder about the other poor reviews. Our neighbours borrow this machine and… Read more
are full of praise, as it is an amazing workhorse. It truly does the business. The side chute for limbs is efficient, but we rarely use it, as we and our neighbours use that size wood for kindling. The shredded limbs go into the compost or the hens yard. It is a little noisy, but not as noisy as a chainsaw or rowdy leaf blower. We find that it does what we want it to do in a short time and choose an appropriate time to use the shredder.
This machine from our long experience, is definitely not a lemon. It is a wondrous garden aid and I am amazed each time we use it, how much work it does in a short period of time. It is was a good buy and well worth the money.
What a load of crap - a waste of money – From the time I ordered my shredder it was doomed to be a lemon (they should repaint it yellow - it sure ain't red hot). Wait three weeks as there are none in stock. Three weeks later - the order got lost - so should have I at this point in time!! The rep delivers it to my stockist two weeks later - sourcing it from another store Operating… Read more
manual was a photo copy of what was available on the web (actually it was the print out)
Within three hours of use it jammed through the shoot and within 5 hours the blade was blunt - more money spent to sharpen
One use later blade blunt again - work on - its not worth pulling it apart AGAIN to sharpen the blade.
This thing is useful only for twigs and anything less than 10mm in diameter
A lemon – I found this shredder pretty useless. I recently check it out on the website to see if they were still selling them so I could put a price on mine for sale. I hadn't used it in years. It didn't have the power I was looking for. I needed something more powerful for my mulching. It got caught and blocked up and I need to push the leaves and branches through with a large block of wood to keep my hands safe.
Cox mulcher - Not up to the task – Bought mine because of the awesome ride on mowers Cox make. Just on that note, I have two cox ride ons and they are bullet proof. The Cox mulcher? Rubbish. Had mine about 5 years with less than 10 hours run time total. Certainly won't cope with the advertised capacity that Cox claims. First failure at around 2 hours bent the crankshaft output… Read more
side. $500 in repairs. Flywheel rotating mass / hammers should have been designed with a secondary bearing support. The operating design relies totally on the cantilevered shaft support provided by the B&S engine case (simple alum slipper/ no ball or roller bearing) .
Second failure at around 10 hours. One of the hammers failed, detaching itself and jamming between the hammer grid and flywheel. The resulting impact demolished the remaining sub components of the flywheel. Replacement flywheel at $600. 10hrs max run time, with nothing larger than 300mm and general foliage inserted.
Good for light household gardening only. Get a real one if you plan on serious mulching. Apart from the appearance of a rugged design, nothing. Expensive, unreliable.
Great Little machine – Strong little machine, great for the small rural block, good for making mulches, good sized hopper and when you have worked out what it likes, it pulls the material in nice and smoothly. Will handle palm fronds, small sticks and branches with ease. Turns wheelbarrow loads of leaves into great dense mulch Simple rugged and easy to use Never liked the briggs motors much, but the only fault I can find... Show reply
