and basically put a dog bowl under it to catch the water. It works quite well, the dog drinks the water so I never have to empty it. That said, because the plug is so low on the machine I had to lift it a few inches off the floor to accommodate the bowl (and you'll need to do the same for all but the smallest bowls).

It's quite heavy and noisy, but I only use it in one room and only on the hottest of days so it's really a case of swings and roundabouts. Cools a medium sized room efficiently. quite heavy, position of water escape valve, exhaust pipe can come loose quite easily, window bracket for exhaust pipe doesn't really work without a little modification.
